Live-Action The Little Mermaid

How many black Disney princesses are there compared to others? Exactly
1 black
1 Chinese
1 Native American
1 Pacific Islander
1 Arabic

Again, Disney has always been at least decently diverse with their princesses.

I’m always a fan of doing something new. Every one should be able to get some shine. But at the same time I’m proud of this Halle Bailey chick.

This is a win win for her.

I never heard of her until an hour ago. The little mermaid already had her time to shine. Again create a new princess and do something ORIGINAL

This often happens in theatre/Broadway. Where’s your “stunt casting” outrage for that? It’ll be the year 2077 and the boys and girls will still take out their “stunt casting” forks for a POC being cast in traditionally yt roles. Cycle continues.

I’m excited; she has an ethereal quality to her, and can sing well. Let’s hope she can act, but considering the live BATB, it’s not like it’ll be hard to outperform its lead.

They been white washing roles for years and years so don't expect someone like me to be outraged over this

Bring on the recreational outrage

You could probably add Esmeralda too as she’s Gypsie.

I could care less about broadways or musicals. I watch movies however.

Keep that same energy if they recast blade as a white man or black panther down the line.

I suspect this is going to be Captain Marvel level fervor with the internet nerds, none of whom by all rights give a **** about this franchise. But this will suddenly evoke them.

Never ceases to amaze me how the casting of one black person in a mainstream role can just expose people’s true colors. This is why I never trust anyone who says “I don’t see color”.

I can’t speak for other non white races (because it’s not my fight or experience) but I’m all for someone like Halle Bailey to get a role like Ariel. As a black person in the entertainment industry you have to fight and hustle to get an opportunity like this one. Of course it would be ideal for us to have our own projects made for us, but in the meantime while we build those, let Halle get her shine and be the Little Mermaid.

And for the record, black people shape and build pop culture, music, etc and others continually bite us and steal our style. So if for every Justin Timberlake/Bieber/Miley Cyrus that’s out there and we get a black version of Annie, The Wizard Of Oz, and now The Little Mermaid, that’s an even trade in my book.

The little mermaid is a Danish story, but it'd be silly to claim that mermaids should have any ethnicity, since they aren even humans.

I find the casting perfectly ok, given what I know of the actress.

Who’s that character? Lol

lol i decided to go on reddit to see if anyone was discussing it and the conversation somehow devolved into talking about reparations.

Exactly.

Half of these people probably never even been to a show. To me Toni Braxton is still the best one to ever play Belle in BATB but that’s another topic.

Black girl magic.

Eh..."always" is a stretch. They didn't get diverse until the 90s.

Anywho, just read about this casting a few minutes ago on facebook. Came here to see the faux outrage. Thanks for not disappointing, those few of you who are hurt by this LOL!!!!!!!

Someone said they should've gone with Yara Shahidi, but...nah. Shahidi isn't a singer.
