Just about to leave for my 2nd viewing, can't wait!
That was actually a really clever reference. Because Xavier wasn't referring to X1, he was talking about the motel where Logan meets Laura, but Logan's still got memories of X1 so he just assumed that's what Charles meant.Saw it, and loved it. This was a great way for Jackman to leave the roll.
The film has problems for sure, but what makes it work is the human emotional level of the film. Much like the MCU films have been doing, this is a CBM film in a genre setting, specifically a western. Hence all the Shane references in the film.
I think it was great to see an emotional connection between Jackman and Stewart that we really haven't seen since X2 and never in this way. It sets up the backbone for the whole picture, that is able to resonate with the viewers.
The biggest thing I didn't like, had nothing to do with the compaints that I hear on here. I'm no prude, I watch game of thrones and love it, but what I don't like is when a character that should be accessible to younger generations is catered to the 18+ crowd. Adding the F-bombs, and over the top gratuitous violence added nothing to what was already a beautiful screen play that had a human quality. That's why I didn't get that this film mirrors Shane so closely, one of my favorite movies that I saw when I was 7 years old.
That kind of stuff is fine for Deadpool, but I freakin' hate this edgier crap that Fox has been throwing into the X-men films, making sure they get at least one F-bomb in per film and this was a chance to have their orgasm of that kind of stuff.
Again, I have no other complaints of this film. It's by far the best Wolverine movie and it's probably the best X-men movie, but it's the least comic bookie of them. In fact I was a bit confused by the timeline, if this is supposed to be an alternate timeline to the other films, or a direct sequel. There's a line in there about the statue of liberty that suggests it is a direct sequel and we see Logan's Samurai sword, but other things that seem to contradict DOFP, and the other Wolverine films. So I took this film as an indirect sequel and only loose connections to the existing cannon, much like the "old man Logan" series was indirect to the rest of the marvel comics.
This is kind of a bitter sweet end. Jackman was the one guy to appear in every X-men film, be it cameo or major appearance. For someone that received so much criticism when he first took the role, he truly made it his own. They've recast just about every other X-men role save his, and if they try, those will be some big shoes to fill.
But what a way to go out.
10/10

I understood this on my third viewing. Before I was confused as to why Xavier randomly mentioned statue of liberty. He was talking about the motel which Laura and the nurse were staying at. The motel was called Statue something (can't remember the name exactly) and had a little statue of liberty as the motels sign.
Speaking of which, I've now seen Logan three times in theaters, I've only done that with a movie once in my life before. Surprisingly, I liked it the most this time. I was able to catch all the little details and nuances.
I took my Mom to see it, she loved Laura. Wanted to adopt her lol.

Saw the movie a few days ago.
First act: 9/10
Rest of the movie: 6 or 6.5/10
Worst part were the mutant kids and their corny powers (grass control... seriously?). I also didn't like how the Reavers were completely wasted... you could've replaced them with regular goons and nothing would have changed.
But again, I really loved the first act.
I think the biggest flaw for me after Xavier's funeral is that Logan passes or falls asleep out one or two too many times.
I got that on my 2nd viewing also, but Charles does reference X1 too, when he said Logan was pursuing a career as a cage fighter.
It does kind of make sense though. Dude was at the end of his rope, both physically and mentally.
I can't agree with you guys, for me those scenes developed not only Laura it her relationship with Logan. It's one of the few times the movie slows down and we get to know a bit more about X23.

He does, though there are discrepancies between what Charles says and what we saw in X1. He says that he found him instead of Rogue, and that Logan was hooked on barbiturates at the time. So it's more of a vague line up rather than out and out saying that the events of X1 happened.
what's a barbiturate?
Basically drugs that slow you down and put you into a calm and doped up state, they're used to help anxiety and pain but like a lot of things they can get abused as a recreational drug.
I noticed that as well, and I was thinking back to if there was ever a reference he was doing anything of the sort in the old movies.
Looks to be another example that Logan exists within its own world.
