Well, Mangold just broke me...

I was thinking about that scene from The Wolverine after I saw Logan, but I hadn't thought of that interpretation before. :waa:

Its like Mangold is trying to break us at this point. Did someone run over his puppy?

Saw the movie a few days ago.

First act: 9/10
Rest of the movie: 6 or 6.5/10

Worst part were the mutant kids and their corny powers (grass control... seriously?). I also didn't like how the Reavers were completely wasted... you could've replaced them with regular goons and nothing would have changed.

But again, I really loved the first act.

If they used regular goons people would have said the should have used Reavers and what a wasted opportunity it was because Pierce is the leader of them in the comics.. you can't please everyone.

I don't think he meant that he wanted them to use normal goons, but rather to use the Reavers in a way that made them more than normal goons.

Who was it on here that caught on The Wolverine ending forshadowing? That poster deserves credit because all the news outlets are picking up on it.

I love Mangold but I dont think he intentionally planned that, I think it was a happy coincidence.

He might have. It would have been as simple as rewatching the Wolverine right before filming Logan.

He probably didnt plan it from the start of making The Wolverine but during the writing stage of Logan was probably when he came up with it. Its not like he would have forgotten about what was said and done in his own film.

Either way its just a neat little thing that adds to the moment and connects his films together.

Yeah, my guess was that it wasn't planned from the start, as the foreshadowing would be better phrased if the word "own" was cut out and she said "you're holding your heart in your hand". It doesn't exclude it as it currently is, but it's not as well phrased as it could be for a double meaning.

The film mistakes ugliness and cynicism for nuance and maturity. The most affecting films are ones that are bittersweet, where there’s just enough beauty to make the bad truly awful. But Logan is nothing but bitterness. And the loftier goals of the drama are undercut by the genre trappings and gratuitous violence. It’s hard to take a film seriously when it has such a high body count, and so much of it is needlessly explicit. Sure, this film needed to be R-rated given the subject matter. But did it really need so many severed heads (with rolling eyes), impalements and explosive gunshot wounds? As others have stated, it felt like a video game, not a serious action movie.

It was LoganPool (check the page before this one).

Earlier in The Wolverine, when they’re on the flight to Japan, Logan asks Yukio if he was going to die on the plane ride. She just says, “Not on this plane,” like she knew something more.

If I remember correctly, it’s not until later in the movie that she has the whole ‘heart in your hand’ dream.

She definitely knew something.

Think about in the beginning of the movie, when Wolverine slaughter's those Cholo's. The camera lingers on their dead bodies, to show the consequences of violence (which was Mangold's intent).

I never felt this movie was violent for the sake of being violent.

^ Exactly. The consequence of a lifetime of violence was part of the theme of the movie. The R-rating only enhanced the story, not just there for the sake of "Look how kewl all this blood and stabbing is!!", which is what I was worried about when the rating was announced.

Enjoyed it thoroughly, can see why the above posters make their critiques about the Reavers/Villians but overall the Stewart/Jackman dialogue/s were great.

Keen definitely did an excellent portrayal as X-23 and Stephen Merchant was awesome as Caliban.

Certainly the best of three Wolvie stand alones for me.

I think the way Jim just ties Shane in with Logan and Laura is absolutely brilliant. When Laura tells Logan she also has nightmares and how she's hurt people, but only the ones who've threatened her and Logan tells her, "it's all the same" - that's the theme of the movie right there.

It's funny watching the original X-Men movie after this. In retrospect that film was in this weird transitional period between 90's superheroes and the films we get today, one foot clearly planted in science fiction the entire time, and all the while hampered by it's obviously low budget resulting in a lack of decent action sequences. The one constant since then however was Jackman. That dude was Wolverine the moment he appeared.

Not sure why people are complaining about Reavers. They did exactly what they were supposed to - mercenary hired thugs. Boyd gave a very charismatic performance as Pierce. But you can't expect the villain to be as well written as someone like William Stryker in X2 or Magneto in X3 because they have a history with Wolverine to work with. Donald Pierce was on par with Kevin Bacon in First Class for me. Both had enough presence to make their roles seem warranted unlike many generic villains in other films like Whiplash, Ronan, Maleketh, etc.

Definitely, its why I liked the inclusion of X24 and why Logan's death was so painful and brutal. A life of violence can only end in violence. But at least Logan found something to fight for in the end that was worth dying for. He at least found a sense of family in the end also, something Charles wanted him to experience..

Take out Ronan as I liked him and throw in Kaecilius instead and I completely agree.

Saw it tonight. Great film. Very emotional. Just a pity that they only finally get Wolverine 'right' when Jackman is hanging up his claws.

I wouldn't say that. The wolverine character has been done right such as in The Wolverine, and even X-men 2.

Logan of course is the first truly great solo wolverine outing.
[BLACKOUT]
As well as the best film in the x-men franchise [/BLACKOUT]

I agree with the blackout 1000%. But that's because it's across the board a great film.

Agree with everything except the blacked comment. Not quite sure it's above X2 or DOFP yet.

Can someone tell me how
the clone character was done? Was it CGI on Hugh's face to make him look younger?

There was something off there for me and I cannot figure out what that was exactly :funny:
