WHAT IF: SPIDER-MAN: THE OTHER
Written by Peter David
Penciled by Koi Pham
Cover by Mark Brooks
In "The Other," Peter Parker returned from the dead and embraced his "inner spider.” But WHAT IF the detente that was reached between man and arachnid had not ended there? What if the man known as Peter Parker had been completely consumed by his inner, bestial impulses, and became more spider than man?
32 PGS

News flash, Marvel: "What If" stories work only if they involve stories that the readers actually thought were good. People accused the Other of being a retread of what happened during the "Avengers:Dissasembled" tie-in in Spectacular Spider-Man and based on the solicit it sounds like it will rip it off even more. And how much you want to make a bet that, just like the actual "Other: Evolve or Die" there will still be a slew of unanswered questions like "what was Peter's mystery disease?" "How did Morlun come back?" "What exactly caused Peter to mutate, or rather "rediscover" his powers?" "Who or what was Tracer and what did he have to do with anything?" "Why after millions of years in which spiders have gone unchanged will they develop retractable stingers?" etc. I know there are some who can't stand retcons but the sooner somebody gets resolves of all this new-age, mystical spider-totem crap and never mentions it ever again--like it was supposed to happen during the "Book of Ezekiel"--the better off Spider-Man will be.

Great.....I thought Peter gave into the Spider when he embraced his inner Spider-God and ate a guy's f(*&*ing head. That's just me, right?

Cool cover, though.

What? When's this coming out? I'll put it on my pull list. Did he eat someone else? I'll check it out. As long as they don't make him that hairy, multi eyed monstrosity he became during the 'queen' story. BTW, we still don't know 'which' Peter is in continuity. I have a feeling some surprises are in store. And if he's much changed, the idea of him and MJ having more kids might be out of the question. Anyone who's seen THE FLY knows where I'm going with that.

*races to comic store*

I bet you the symbiote cover is just a ploy, you'll open the book and find Manbearspider eating Kraven the Hunter's body

Y'see I retired early last night and forgot to add the point after a few posts oops.

Yes, it was a horrible storyline, and yes seeing Peter "die" come back to life after ripping himself out of his own body, live in a cocoon and take the ring off his old body, reminds me of that disgusting **** in The Fly.

BUT,

Maybe Peter Parker really did die. Perhaps that was the end of our Spider-Man (head eating and all) and he in fact is dead and what came out of the cocoon is a Tony Stark engineered puppet. He has been dead and now we get this stupid creature that thinks it is Parker by unmasking itself but will melt and die and we'll be done.

Sorry as stupid as it was making Spider-Man mystic (and ****ting on what were two classic stories by JMS himself, Coming Home and The Book of Ezekiel) I think that it was reasonably Parker who died that night and that would explain how he went from intelligent loner and hero to stupid tool.

Just maybe....

For the record The Other can be retconned like it never happened faster than Sins Past (which fans have self-forced retconn) but the unmasking really can't be retconned not unless you get into lame DC land excuses like "Superboy punched the timeline" or "Infinte Crisis," sorry again to any DC fans though.

Not the hugest DC fan but at least theyre honest about their retcons instead of going "no, no, it just never happened that way" like marvel do with things like xorn or dr conners being good/evil.

They'll retcon it all by bringing back the Foreigner and having him go on tv and make the whole world "Black out" and forget the unmasking and all thru hypnosis.

Yeh....thats the ticket.

Oh I'm convinced the last Lizard story was Spider-Man Unlimited #19, one of the top 5 Lizard tales at that and he was cured and never came back. Jenkins' story never happened.

<Someone tells DACrowe Conners is evil and Billy is a dead lizard boy>

LALALLALALALA, NOT LISTENING, LALALALALALLA

And yes I liked the Fly but I don't like Peter Parker becoming The Fly and ddisgusting though.

since when was billy dead in the first place? he was in sensational recently right?

While the Iron Spider suit is temporary, Joey Q already stated the mystic origin of Peter will NOT be retconned.

The Other was rather pointless to me other than the fact that it got rid of Peter's old ulcer that he developed around ASM #46.

:)

Now that time has lapsed and we've seen what Marvel has...."done" to Spidey since then (unmasking himself, punching Cap America in the face....being a complete tool) was this story so bad?

I don't recall seeing Spidey actually punch Cap in the face... but seeing as they have fought one another a few times in the past, namely ASM #186 being a good fight, why is this such a big deal?

Marvel heroes have all fought one another on many occasions for differing reasons.

I know. I've noticed people acting like this was a new concept alot lately.

Yeah..... it still sucks. I mean, whenever I am reminded of it the only thing i can think of is.... SPIDER-MAN ATE A GUY'S FREAKIN' HEAD!!!!!

What the hell people?

What the hell....

Well I guess Morlun will never be the....head of a major coorporation. I guess when push came to shove he couldn't keep his head on straight....I guess Spidey does prefer head over heels.

Okay I'll stop with that one then.

i didn't think the other was THAT bad. hudlin and lee pretty much killed most of the issues me. FNSM # 1 was a good issue, i dare someone to try to tell me what was wrong with it. and yeah it was 12 parts, but it wasn't a long story IMO. it seems that people are forgeting that all 12 parts came out within 4 months. that's less than most comics do today with their 6 issue arcs. or a 8 issue story that went no where, but did do something good with the title changes that came out of it.

Why look back at a story that is obviously heavily agreed upon among ALL Spider-Man fans to have been a horrible story?

People are only torturing themselves by revisiting something they don't like. Or do people just love to hate things so much?

Don't make this storyline into a Sins Past debacle where everybody goes, "I HATE THIS STORY!" Yet talk about it every damn day practically even 2 years later. :o

Well until the suit is gone we can't wipe that lousy story out of continuity (fnas have kinda' done that to Sins Past). I pretend Lizard stories are done, and yes for the record "evil" Conners turns Billy into a mini-Lizard and a cop shoots and kills him.

Spider-Man is officially dead isn't he then?

Well, I guess you could say Morlun's 'head' wasn't into the story.

Or that Spidey's a 'head' case.

And spiders like brains.

Morlun (backs away) "Stop. WHAT ARE YOU DOING??"

Peter (leaps on top) "The spider wants a BRAAAINN!!"

*Crack krunkle pop*

Peter (crunching happily) "Not bad. Tastes like chicken." :woot:

I guess Spidey got....ahead of Morlun.

I guess Spidey gave Morlun....a head's up.

When Morlun went to kill MJ, Spidey had to....head him off.

Oh these are so easy. :p

Peter Parker ate some dude's head.

God I hate Marvel.

Looking back at The Other I can cofirm that it was pure crap.

I guess Peter seeing Morlun try to kill Mary Jane went to his head. :p
