International box office not enough to save a movie or greenlight a sequel.

Battleship made like over $200 million overseas and like $300 million worldwide. So did Green lantern.

Let me first say looking at the Box office UNCLE won't get a sequel but VileOne the movies you compared it to are totally off, because Battleship and Green Lantern had budgets of over 200 Million but UNCLE only has an 80 Million budget so they are very bad examples.

I just saw this. It was pretty good. As many people have said, it had great style.

Cavill was, for me, clearly the best part of the movie. He seemed to inhabit his role more naturally than anyone else (not that Hammer or Vikander were bad). He was great in those moments where he's self-assured and cocky right before Illya shows him up or the situation gets out of his control. There are little moments of realization where he seems kind of confused and then he just accepts what's happened and slips right back into his persona. Think of the scene where he's drugged.

The movie tried to straddle the line between fun action-comedy and spy-thriller a little too much. The storyline between Illya And Gaby needed to be better developed to make it a more satisfying spy-thriller. Or they needed to push the comedy slightly harder. There's a few scenes where there's a build up and it seems like they're going to go silly and have some fun but they just peter out and the scene ends before it gets going. Examples of this are when Victoria visits Napoleon's hotel room or a lot of the scenes when Illya starts to get mad but nothing happens.

All in all it was a good time. Hopefully it makes enough money overseas for a sequel. I enjoyed the performances and would like to see more of the characters.

Yeah, but Man from UNCLE isn't going to touch what either Green Lantern or Battleship did worldwide.

No. It won't, but it's not going to take the bath the GL and, to a lesser extent, Battleship did. It can't as it didn't cost that much. In addition, it was a much, much better, more entertaining movie than either of them. I had high hopes for both and saw them opening day, but my hopes were quickly squashed.

Gloomy Gus.

Better said by you than me. I don't want to experience your boot firsthand. :woot:

It's too bad it didn't debut higher. I don't know if it was just bad marketing, bad timing or a little of both, but it really was an enjoyable movie and was more than good enough to have drawn really well.

I like spy/action/etc. movies, but Vikander's dance scene might have been my favorite scene in the movie (well, outside of the boat chase/Solo in the truck scene). Wow.....

I really enjoyed this film, Henry Cavill & Armie Hammer have a great partnership. Loved the feeling of a good old fashioned spy film that was very period 60's piece. It kinda had the Austin Powers feel with a more serious tone but had good amount of comedy to balance out the action.

I'm greatly looking forward to the sequel and I hope to see more Hugh Grant as Waverly, he was spot on.

I enjoyed this movie well enough. It had a great style. The leads were easily the best part of the movie, and the biggest reason to suggest it to anyone.
The plot itself wasn't very interesting, and I didn't really feel invested at all. But the leads were fantastic.
Henry Cavill had more to say in the first 15 minutes of this film than he did in the whole Man of Steel. This movie really highlights just how little Henry has been given to work with for Superman.

My local radio personalities were so clueless about this movie. They thought George clooney and Tom cruise were in it.

Radio personality #1- man from u.n.c.l.e was number 3 at the box office. Thats too bad it had a lot of big name stars.

:whatever:

It's not pessimism, only facts.

Agreed.

The movie cost $80m and they spent $30m+ just on US TV ads as of last week. Overall they probably spent around $150m to produce and market this movie.

O/S it opened in 23 countries, on 5,000 screens and made $12m. Of the major markets it opened only in Russia was decent. UK was mediocre and in Germany, Australia and H.K. it bombed.

It will be lucky to make $50m domestic and $100m o/s which would roughly mean $65m going back to the studio and $85m in the red before ancillary. Even after ancillary it could be a $50m write-off as DVD sales are not what they used to be and even streaming and VOD haven't taken up the slack in lost revenue. Even if it for some reason becomes a huge after theatrical hit it would take years to approach breaking even.

No way there's a sequel. WB is probably telling Richie to get his Holmes 3 in order.

I'd be happy to hear that.

UNCLE doesn't deserve such low numbers. I enjoyed the movie and will be disappointed if we don't get a sequel but at the very least I have my TV dvd box set of tge series.

I agree wrt the low box office numbers. I thought it was quite entertaining. I think a combo of poor marketing and hitting the theaters at the same time as SOC pretty much killed it. If done correctly, I think a sequel "could" be profitable, but my money isn't on it happening. Maybe some movie god will say "This wasn't a bad movie. I'll bet we can turn it around", but I ain't holding my breath. If there was a sequel, I'd go see it.

Direct to DVD sequel starring Brandon Routh and Liam Hemsworth!

That would be too bad becuase I enjoyed man from uncle way more than either of the Holmes films.

Maybe it will find an audience on Blu-Ray/DVD. I doubt it would be enough to warrant a sequel, but maybe it will make some of that money back and people will come to respect it.

I'm actually not gloomy at all. Just a pragmatist. So call me Pragmatic Pete.

Pragmatic Pete looks at something, determines if it is worth his while, and then either continues to deal with it or ignores it from then on....because he is being pragmatic about it.

Gloomy Gus looks at something, determines it is no good, and then proceeds to tell everyone it is no good (even if they say they like it) because he is gloomy Gus and everyone should be gloomy like he is.
