Superman Returns vs. Spiderman 3.

Tough match up.

Spider Man 3 was a terrible film wasn't it? Though I think Bryce Dallas Howard saved it in some parts. How can you have the other girl be hotter than the Mary Jane

SM3 is seen as part of the Raimi trilogy which apparently is still loved(notice all the asm bashing last year). So much so that SM3 was breaking records during it's run I think.

Returns was DOA.
And wasn't part of some genre defining trilogy.

No comparison imo. Especially as international films.

It baffles me that SR only made 50 million opening weekend. Its Superman, doesn't that count for anything?

It had good early reviews as well.

People were having problems with that movie the moment it was announced. Remember that first photo of Routh? Good god that was a dark day for Superman fans.

SR opened on a Wednesday, if it had stuck to its original Friday release date it probably would have done around $65-70M OW.

Outside of IM and possibly cap, this tends to happen to all launch reveals.
Xmen maybe got it the worst, but I was pretty young so I don't remember.

Obviously I don't know the narrative and the character trajectories. I meant in terms of Abrams directing and aesthetic value, which is both good and bad.

I don't think "rose coloring" has to with anything. I just recently re-watched SM2 and it still holds up great, much better I still hold than TASM.

Maybe after TASM 2 comes out people will be able to compare sequel to sequel. ASM1 walks circles around SM1 imo. Especially the ben parker stuff.

How exactly would releasing SR on Friday have helped it, that's taking 2 extra money making days from it. Also I have not seen IM3 but I've heard loud "this movie is crap" around the Internet. So 2 good movies can still give a less than stellar 3rd movie business.
