Man of Steel Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 10

MOS has a solid, yet unspectacular BO so far. I predict it'll die at $650 WW. That should be a success considering it's a reboot of a character with dying appeal among the GA. If MOS2 has a hard time besting this at the BO, than we might be in some trouble. I don't think WB will ever greenlight a flash, aquaman, or wonder woman solo movie with a $180-$220 budget unless MOS2 is in the ballpark of $800-$1bill.

With mixed reactions and WOM with this film, WB would be wise to scrap their tentative 2014 release date and make sure they have a better script.

Yes and no.

The fact that a record OW crowd turned out, despite generally negative reviews, tells me the audience is ready for a great Superman film. MOS was not great. If it had been the BO would have been a lot higher.

So the potential is there for an 800 million plus Superman film.

The question is will WB make the needed changes/corrections/fixes to allow that to happen.

The 2014 release date was always bogus. Think - no way practically that could be done.

2016 seems likely and that is time enough.

And yes, it could all come down to MOS2. Does it fly or underperform MOS? The Tomb Raider syndrome.

Which is why some of us are critical of Goyer and Snyder and WB (release date) re: MOS.

MOS2 has to be cooking with gas or there will be no MOS3 and perhaps no Flash or WW or JL.

There is more riding on MOS2 than there was on MOS.

IT would be absolutely ridiculous to make the next film something that would keep him from the Daily Planet the entire film.

The are great films that have not reach where MOS Has not.LIKE BATMAN BEGINS etc...
Anyway i thought MOS was great.RT - The audience GAVE it 4.2/5 stars.

Good point.

There is so much hanging on the sequel and how it is written and who is featured.

2016 is soon enough. MOS stumbled but it looks like it will end up at 650 million plus WW. The potential is clearly there for a breakout sequel as BB had and others.

Maybe the totally new team at WB is a plus at this time.

If MOS2 is successful we could get an MOS and a WF's.

Some discount the shortcomings of MOS and its nice to see there are others besides myself who don't.

A great Superman film is possible and when it comes, hopefully the sequel, it will blow away records and rekindle the popularity of Superman in the popular culture which has waned over the past several decades.

Its an exciting time to be a Superman fan.

No doubt Tobias.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I want a Superman film that outdoes TDK and every other superhero franchise out there.

I'm a fan of all comic heroes, but my favorite has always been Supes. I love what Raimi, Nolan, Whedon and all the rest have done for comic book films, but I want Superman to stand over and above the rest. I want Superman to reclaim his spot at the top of the comic book movie food chain. MOS didn't get the rebooted Superman film series off to the best of starts, but that's not to say they can't recover and churn out a hell of a sequel that puts it into the conversation.

This person makes a good point here.

To me it seems as though some people had highly unrealistic expectations for this movie.

If The Dark Knight Rises made $1.08 billion then this movie was never going to get remotely close to that i don't care what the guys at WB said.

Superman despite being the most famous superhero isn't the most liked at all. He is not on Batman, Spider-man or now even Iron Man's level of popularity.

So prior to this movie coming what did you think this movie was going to make at the box office. For myself I thought.

Domestic - $280 million
Worldwide - $580 million

Box Office Mojo were expecting $650 million also.

I think worldwide it will reach 600 - 650 million, maybe around 700 million at most.

Yeah.

Funny, I get accused of being a hater when nothing could be further from the truth. Like I don't spend hours writing Superman fan-fiction (I am superfan2 at fanfiction.net) cause I have nothing better to do.

I want Supes to be number one again and I want a great Superman film that blows the critics away, gets a 9 plus rating on RT and totally engages the younger set. A new generation of fans is needed. They are waiting for something simple - to believe again that a man can fly.

MOS2 is crucial and following its development will be fascinating.

Some folks scoff at me for writing WB re: MOS2. That's cool. I don't expect the President will read my letter but an intern will and, if that person is taken at all by it, they will pass it on. Its the least I can do as a Superman fan whether Kevin Tsujihara reads it or not.

I think it would be better to hope for a Superman movie that's true to the character and what you want to see in Superman movie, instead of worrying about what it does to the other franchises.

But if my toy isn't the newest, the biggest, the best, what is the point?!?!?! :csad:

This is truth. Granted, what everyone wants will be different, but what attracts the GA in a way to shatter the BO might not be what the 'true' fan (open to interpretation) hopes to see in a film.

It has been a good week for the box office of MOS. I think that even next days will be good. At the end of next week we'll know the chances to hit the 300m mark.

Nevertheless MOS has been a solid restart of the franchise.
Talking about the sequel, I think only that at WB they are already late in building DC universe at cinema. The lack of a real epilogue that introduced another character/JLA possibility/sequel is still obscure to me.

I only can imagine that they were too scared by the possibilty of another SR.
Fortunately MOS has been a success, but now they have to hurry on. And it is not a good thing.

I don't think WB is going to change anything for MOS2....unless its an issue that they studio head or EP has....this movie just hit $500M and is still going...which is a positive in the eyes of the studio.
Look at Transformers...everybody and their brother complained about the movie but the first one made $709M...they continued the series and didn't address complaints and the 2nd one did $836M...and then the 3rd one came out and made $1.1B

Now if this movie did Green Lantern money then they'd try messing with the formula but as of right now this is what movie Superman is going to be like...any changes made will be because of the director and screenwriter...not because people complained

that was a deliberate decision not to do the after credit scenes. Yes they are copying Marvel with a shared universe (not really since Batman and Robin mentioned Superman and SR mentioned Gotham...they just havent been on screen together) they just don't have to copy everything.

I wonder if Warner Bros was surprised when MOS broke the June opening weekend record and reboot record. I read somewhere that WB only expected $80mil opening weekend, unless that was a lie.

Global Box Office: 'Man of Steel' Crosses $500 Million, Sets Sights on $650 Million

Snyder and Christopher Nolan's Man of Steel crossed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office over the weekend, prompting Warner Bros. to celebrate the successful resurrection of the iconic Superman film franchise.

The tentpole, now in its third weekend, has earned $248.7 million domestically and $271.7 million internationally for a total of $520.4 million. Box observers believe it will ultimately earn north of $650 million worldwide, and perhaps even approach $700 million.

"Man of Steel is an extraordinary achievement by wonderful talents on both sides of the camera," said Sue Kroll, WB president of worldwide marketing and international distribution.

Kroll announced the $500 million milestone with WB president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman and international distribution president Veronika Kwan Vandenberg.

"The film took Superman back to his roots for a new generation of moviegoers, who have once again embraced Krypton and Kansas' favorite son," Fellman said.

Starring Henry Cavill in the title role and Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Man of Steel has done huge business in IMAX theaters, which have generated $45.9 million in worldwide ticket sales.

Man of Steel earned $20.8 million domestically for the weekend and $52.2 million internationally, putting it at No. 3 globally behind Brad Pitt's zombie tentpole World War Z, which placed No. 1 for the frame with $99.9 million.
From Paramount, World War Z held well in North America, falling less than 49 percent in its second weekend to $29.8 million for a domestic total of $123.7 million. Overseas, the film opened in another 25 markets, grossing a stellar $70.1 million from a total of 50 markets, and pushing the film's international cume to $135.3 million.

Disney and Pixar's Monsters University, crossing $300 million in its second weekend, placed No. 2 worldwide with weekend receipts of $90.4 million. The 3D animated tentpole stayed at No. 1 in North America with $46.2 million. Overseas, the pic earned $44.2 million from 37 markets for an international total of $129.3 million and worldwide cume of $300.3 million.

Universal's Despicable Me 2 -- playing in only seven international markets -- grossed $41.5 million for the weekend to place No. 4 worldwide, just ahead of Melissa McCarthy-Sandra Bullock R-rated comedy The Heat, which wowed in its North American debut with $40 million for 20th Century Fox.

According to this from the Hollywood Reporter MOS will settle with 650-700 million WW.

They were lowballin' it just so they wouldn't look embarrassed if it underperformed.

depends on who you believe...they only expected 80M but there were reports that after a screening at WB they signed Goyer to MOS2 and JL since they were so pleased with the movie

They were lowballing their projections. Studios always do that, just like rival studios inflate the projections of a movie to make the other studio look bad.

Actual internal projections for Warner Bros on Man Of Steel were higher.

Lucky the RT reviews criticized MOS for having too much action and not enough 'heart'. I think a lot of people would have feared MOS was low on action ala Superman Returns.

How about a Luthor/Braniac combo and introduce the Dan Turpin character that would be murdered by Braniac, now we will see some acting from Henry anger, grief and humbled during the funeral for a friend. With Braniac we will see the bottled city of Kandor too. For the JL tie in Clark hears an emergency report of an interdimensional boom tube in Gotham with a report of The Flash and GL already engaging a being calling himself Kalibak

Paramount should have done that with STID because they were expecting a 100 mil!
Yeah, and you could tell they were scrambling as they kept "adjusting" their expectations over the first 4 days. Sad really, because I really, really like it.

I wonder if the fact that Brainiac was in Singer's SR sequel will lower the odds of Brainiac being in MOS2. Maybe not, but it might be considered.
