Man of Steel Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 8

I'm not denying that there are many people who find this movie as epic. However, I can understand why this movie just doesn't work for a number of people.

My issue is people are taking the extreme position of both sides. One side is arguing MoS is a huge success and pretending only a few people disliked the movie. The other crowd is pretending this movie is so bad that it will not make any profit at the box office.

People need to realise MoS is a mixed movie just like Superman Returns to a degree. This may affect the sequel plans.

You could end up in a scenario where WBs took the incredible hulk route and have a minor "reboot".

SR was so bad BO showed that domestic and oversea. MOS on the other hand is well love by the GA all over the world. It's just that some fans was hoping it was like the TDK type of script and was disappointed when it didn't meet what they were hoping for. Some take it as far as wishing it fail to get a reboot, get rid of the writer and director, etc... Than there are the other fans who loves it and calling it the best ever... Each group have their opinion but the truth is MOS did what it was suppose to do... Make Superman cool again or get the GA to want to see more of MOS... MOS is not as mixed as some people think... it's 80/10/5. With 80% loving it, 10% mix, and 5% hate it... Yes those that don't like want to make sure their voice is heard and I don't blame them... They have the right to their own opinion but I only have issue with them when they start trying to make it seem like most of the GA hate MOS... :whatever: This argument will never end as long as there are two opinions...

DC/WB drew their line in the sand. They knew the ending was going to create controversy and they knew their beloved hero needed a more edgier and modern take on the character regardless if the older fans cried foul. There will be no soft reboot and they will continue to broaden the story in MOS2. When it's all said and done, the numbers for a reboot is considered a WIDE success and they will plunge forward with this version no matter how bad some people want it to fail. The negatives and mixed reactions are highly exaggerated. They are there, but for the most part, the GA loved this BALLSY move by Snyder and co.

I think a nice big smile at end of movie may be nice for setting up a sequel but that still doesn't hide the issue that Cavill wasn't given much to work with in the film. I can see why people would call him "wooden" in MOS when the guy wasn't given much to do in the movie but look serious or confused and mutter a few lines here and there. Cavill really wasn't all that different than Routh was in SR when it came to depth of his character.

This is true. Both came off as wooden. And yet they are not. Both were poorly directed.

Reeve had intense scenes with Luthor. He did it with fluidity however. The confrontation in the lair. Both Cavill and Routh seemed too tense in their intense scenes. Lacking fluidity.

TDKR IMO was the worst of the series... but that's another topic itself...

That's what I was basically saying. The story being told CALLED for Clark to keep close to the vest. He may have come off as wooden because.....CLARK was wooden. In that sense, I thought Cavill was a phenom as Superman. He really was. Though his Daily Planet Clark calls for better range, Cavill showed a ton of guts and character embodiment.

As for Routh, lets not go there. The dude was asked to be Chris Reeve. Point blank. Period. End of story. He had no depth because he was a lookalike. Cavill atleast made the role his OWN for what the story was intended to be.

I do not know why MOS not getting a sequel is even being discussed. It is getting one for sure. WB invested in Nolan and Snyder and they need to see it through to at least a sequel

I can't speak for Brandon Routh's portrayal which to me was more Reeves-like if anything, but as for Cavill and this new telling of the tale, in this movie - and I say that because what's relevant is this movie and nothing that has come before it, period - Clark is just shy (no pun intended) of being as reclusive as possible when it comes to being around other humans, in any and all situations.

After 33+ years of being pretty much alone in ways that "mere mortals" could never begin to fathom or comprehend with any level of understanding whatsoever, he's suddenly forced into the world view meaning everybody knows who he is as "Superman" and hardly any person aside from Martha and Jonathan know as Clark.

It reminds me in some respects of a line of dialogue from the upcoming Terry Gilliam film, "The Zero Theorem" and it goes like this:

Girl at party to main character at party: "So, are you here alone?"
Main character: "I'm alone no matter where I am."

Laughed hard the first time I heard it and right now it seemed relevant for this particular topic I'm discussing, guess I'm just weird with the free associations, who knows. :D

I've said it before and I'm gonna say it again even though a lot of people dismiss the idea as "bad writing" which seems to be the whole gist of most every problem people claim this movie has and I don't agree:

By the end of this movie Kal/Clark has been "Superman" for a day or two at most, he just sent some of his own people into the Phantom Zone, killed off the one remaining Kryptonian with his bare hands, and saved the world almost all in the same basic act.

Cut the guy some slack, geez. :D

Amen... It's just that some folks like to put the doom/gloom to start Sh###... and try to ruin the success of MOS for some fans.

you know what MOS 2 needs??

kitties. lots and lots of kitties. cute kitties. fluffy kitties. sweet kitties.

purrs and meows oh my.

.........but then dog lovers will cry foul and bash MOS 2 for having too much kittyness...........

meow.

Nothing ruined here. Do you understand how fanboys react? It's ridiculous. Most fanboys should have ruined almost every incarnation of any superhero movie. It's basically the norm. They don't like anything and claim a depiction to be THEIR way or the HIGHWAY. Hell, most hated Batman Begins at first and claimed it absolutley dreadful to the honor of Batman. We all know what happened next........

MOS, Cavill, Adams, Snyder & Goyer are here to stay. Goyer is going to need help to put the franchise onto his shoulders of a shared universe. MOS is still a masterpiece to me (not a perfect movie, people.) They changed it up, told a non-liner origin that I adored. To each their own, but the sequel is defiantly happening.

It think it needs to show Superman saving a cat or a girl in the car... lol Maybe that will satisfy some people... lol

So are we setting our sights at around 600M WW? Been out of the loop for the BO predictions for a bit.

It also needs a little girl saying to her Mummy that she saw a flying man and then a Mum who smacks her for telling lies :oldrazz:

SR was so bad BO showed that domestic and oversea.

But Superman Returns did made nearly 400 million dollars worldwide. That's nearly twice its budget.

Man of Steel, despite being more well-liked by the general audience, does not look like it will earn that much more than SR.

This will affect whether Zack Synder is returning for the next movie (especially in light of the infighting in WBs) and whether the next movie will receive the right amount of financial support.

WBs might decide to scrap a direct sequel and opt to make a justice league movie instead, or they might decide let the DC franchise die out again for a few years.

I'm going to say between $650-$700 WW. Each number would be considered a pleasant success to a rebooted franchise.

Yup. looks like 270 domestic and 330 - 350 OS. 600 million plus change WW.

The 270 assumes MOS continues its larger than normal 60% plus weekend drops. Normal drops after week two would be 45% or so. Doesn't look like MOS can attain that norm. If however it can reduce its drops to 50% each weekend it could end up at 285 million domestic.

Man of Steel, despite being more well-liked by the general audience, does not look like it will earn that much more than SR.

Huh?

SR grossed $391M Total WW
MOS is on pace for $600M+ Total WW

What are you talking about?

See these are the stupid post I was referring too.. What are you smoking... MOS Budget is $225 mil & Superman return $270 mil (not sure where that money went). MOS already has 400 mil WW in 10 days while it took SR it's entire run... MOS already has 175 million in promotion profit. You tell me which one is making the money again... wow... At the end of MOS run it will probably end up with 600 mil or more.... I bet by the end of this weekend it will be at 500 million WW...

This is true. JL was planned as the next film after MOS for a while then suddenly MOS2 took precedence.

I won't be surprised to see them go JL instead of MOS2 or maybe neither and do the Batman reboot first. Let the rest of the DC universe wait on hold and get a new bats trilogy going.

The infighting and new WB head makes me believe WB has no made a decision on what to do next.

I feel like I am in some bizarro thread. I can't believe some of the stuff I'm reading in here.

I don't know how you skew a 65% drop, or 68% if you include the Wal-Mart numbers.

May, June, or July...

MOS is mirroring IM3 and TASM right now. 2.4ish multiplier when it is likely all said and done.

Too bad those won't be getting sequels in one form or another.....:o

Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur... = 2 Billion at the BO.
