ComicBookResources.com conducted an interview with comic book writer Mark Waid at Saturday's Long Beach Comic Con, and, amongst other things, asked him about his thoughts on Superman movies.

As a Superman fan, what are your thoughts on the 5 Superman movies to date, and what would you like to see in [Zack] Snyder's film?

Waid: First, I'd like to see "Superman Birthright" in Zack Snyder's film. [Audience laughs] You know what else I'd like to see in Superman in Zack's film? Brandon Routh, because I thought he was a great Superman. I really thought he nailed it.

The first one changed my life, second one I have grown to appreciate even though at the time it crushed me because it was more of a comedy. Third one I loved at the time. It led to my first angry meeting with John Byrne; I stood in line at a convention to get his signature on something, I was still a fan, and I had just seen "Superman III" and liked some of the stuff in it, and I mentioned it to John Byrne and it didn't go well. He started screaming at me, and that scarred me for life. I'm just a guy in line! Don't yell at me for liking "Superman III!" Yes, it sucks in retrospect, but I was like 17, I didn't know! [Audience laughs]

And then the fourth one, the fourth one kills me. I was there on opening day at the Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. I was going to move cross-country to take the job at DC Comics as an editor, and I told them I couldn't start until Monday 'cause I have to drive out and be there on Friday for the premiere of this movie. I've got to be there. It's the world premiere. So I went in all full of expectation and I came out a wrecked man. [Audience laughs] Not what I expected. And I'm the one guy who a) likes "Superman Returns" and b) I think that history will judge it more kindly than it was judged at the time.

Read the complete interview at ComicBookResources.com.

The rumors (confirmed by Snyder) of Superman's "early days" seem to back up the inspiration of Waid's Birthright on the film.

Wow he has really packed on sum mass! look at him next to chris evans, routh almost makes him look small.

The fact of the matter is that if they cast routh and he gets a chance to let loose and portray a modern superman, and differentiate himself in portrayal when compared to SR then there wont be any problem with people understanding and accepting. If they reinvent the character and the films universe the way that Nolan did with batman begins in audiences eyes, and drop routh in the middle, it will work.

hame speaks the truth. The general audience is smart enough to tell the difference between MOS and SR. Give them a movie that is visually and tonally different from SR. Complete with a new supporting cast. The only people who can't get around the whole "Routh in MOS = SR sequel" are fanboys like us.

People don't go to a Superman movie to watch Lois Lane or Jimmy Olsen or Perry White. They go to watch Superman...and in the eyes of many, Routh is STILL Superman.

You would think that someone would try and get more of an official statement from Warners or from Snyder and Co. in regards to this BR situation in order for us BR Fans to know if we can at least have credible reason to hope for BR returning for the role that I feel he was born to play.

That WAS pretty hilarious. Garlic tampon...? :woot:

the problem with having routh return is that it would feel like a sequel than a reboot imo

:woot: LOL, awesome!

I haven't seen Scott Pilgrim yet, but that was a fun audition from Routh.

Man I hope Snyder has the good sense to keep Routh as the Man of Steel

Me too. I honestly feel like it's the right thing to do. Brandon totally deserves it.

^This, it isn’t exactly rocket science, despite what Routh fanboys and girls claim it just wont make sense. Routh will always be associated with SR and in this case it is not a good thing.

He'll always be associated as being Superman, not being the guy from SR.

I might sound like a broken record, but i'll repeat it, fanboys are the ones who get hung up on the association crap. The general audience doesn't get caught up in that or put that much thought into it. Whether Routh returns or someone else is chosen, all the general audience is going to care about is if they guy makes a good Superman or if the movie is good.

^ Routh was the only superman in live action since 1987 yes he is seen as superman

but superman in the crappy Superman returns

it is that simple

it is like rebooting daredevil with ben affleck

Difference is Routh was much more appreciated as Superman than Affleck was as Daredevil and SR more successful than DD.

If Routh returned and put ina good performance and MOS is a success, people will not care.

who knows what's going on..its all confusing.

"If reboot means to act as if there were no movies before, then it's a reboot. It owes nothing to the movies of the past."

Zack adds that "the internet has no idea what's going on" behind the scenes of the production and says a suggestion that Zod is the villain is "just wrong."

He hasn't yet thought about casting, he reveals, and is unaware of a campaign to get Brandon Routh back in the role, despite a tabloid report that said Snyder acknowledged the 'groundswell' of support for that actor and would reconsider him.

I'm not expecting Routh to return, but I think it would be great if he did. I just hope if he is indeed replaced, the new actor is a good choice

That blog is notorious for posting false information and speculation.

Here, they do the same thing. The quote the Empire interview regarding the script and Zod, but the part about Brandon Routh has no basis from the Empire interview piece with Snyder.

It is the opinion of the author that he is trying to pass off as fact. The same blog has been pushing for a Smallville movie for years.

In other words, the statement regarding Routh is BS.

Have you read the Empire interview in it's entirety? If so, is Routh even mentined?

He is.

The blog said the Empire Article confirmed that "bringing back someone from a previous Superman incarnation can be well and truly ruled out," but that was just a spin.

This is the actual quote:

Have you thought about casting? Are you aware of the Brandon Routh campaign?
I am not. There's a campaign? I'm sure there is. It's called the internet. No, I haven't really thought about it. It's super-early.
SOURCE: Empire, issue #258

Basically, all he says is it's too early in the process to discuss casting. The same statement he made at the red carpet where he was previously asked about Brandon:

It does debunk the tabloid rumour that Snyder was said he was aware of the movement for Routh and he was getting an audition.

Clint says he's being considered though and Clint is usually pretty reliable.

I mentioned the tabloid was false numerous times pages and pages ago. The biggest red flag it was false was the use of the word "groundswell;" which was a word Brandon previously used in an interview to describe the movement he wants fans to participate in to show support for his return.

As far as Clint and AICN goes, they can be reliable. However, if there is casting discussions happening, there's no way the director would admit to them at this point or reveal anything.

Remember what happened with Green Lantern, we didn't get anyone involved with the project (or potential castmembers) revealing anything till after the process was completed. ex: Bradley Cooper constantly denied he was a frontrunner for GL until after RR was announced.

We aren't supposed to know what's really happening at this stage.

LOL it's mind-boggling how you've come to the Smallville forums week after week (or at least did until the mods told you to leave) to troll the hell out of everyone about about how Welling will not be getting the role, yet you come here and show that you are in absolute denial about Routh not getting an invite back.

Let it go, man :o
