The Last Jedi Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker (VIII)

Not even a week, and I am sick of all the Grey Jedi talk.

I think the answer here is the obvious one. Luke's hardships led him to want to do away with the Jedi; Rey inspires him to believe in it again and train her. The Jedi have to come back.

I hope it leads to a significant change in the way the Jedi do things, though. Pre-TFA, I think we all expected/hoped that Luke was the first of the new kind of Jedi-- one whose Order would do away with the detachment, rigidity and even political affiliations of the old one.

What I would accept now that we know what we know about him so far, is that he hunted down as much knowledge of the old Jedi ways as possible and tried to replicate them as best he can, thinking it was simply the right thing to do. That it was exclusively the Sith that destroyed them, rather than it being a combo of them and something turning rotten at the core.

So once his Order's destroyed, Luke's finding whatever he needs to find at the First Temple and Rey helps him get over his funk and out of the "the Jedi must end" mindset, he sets out to create the Order we expected. Plus that way it will feel like a true evolution of the OT, and avoid those pesky retread complaints.

TL;DR: I'm sure the Order will be rebuilt, but it should take a notably different form from Luke's original and the PT era for the sake of the arc and creating a fresh-but-familiar and creatively potent set up going forward. Plus it would feel like a natural evolution of the OT, rather than a potential retread or obviously delaying the return of the Order so that we can see it on-screen.

I am also not a fan of this theory. "It is so much bigger"

Now that's what I want to see; a kind of Jedi Reformation, wherein dogma and doctrine are much less rigid and a lot less likely to create emotionally blind Masters who can't see when the dark aside is pulling the wool over their eyes, or when a young Knight clearly requires emotional feedback and support. The kind of Jedi Order that seeks to undercut selfishness by embracing selfless love of others instead of cutting off all attachments.

On another note, I've been thinking how awesome it would be to have Luke showcase not being limited to the old Jedi teachings by using some kind of light side Force Lightning. Just for kicks, and only for one or two scenes.

Yeah, I feel the same. It would be a fitting end point for this trilogy to have a new order that had learned from the mistakes of the past and redeemed itself in a way through Luke and Rey. It's honoring the story of the PT as well as the OT.

There was a precedence set with Luke force choking and presumably killing the Gamorrean guards but force lighting seems to be too much of a dark side and, in particular, an Emperor hallmark.

This is exactly how I feel it should turn out, but we will see. It just makes sense.

It's great to see so much of Mark after him being more or less out of the public eye for so many years. He seems to be having a blast!

Check it out LUKE SKYWALKER
star-wars-cover-2017-VF-01.jpg

The first cover features at least one Jedi—who may or may not be the last. Leibovitz captured Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill on the blustery cliff on the planet Ahch-To (on location in Ireland) where Luke Skywalker was last seen with Ridley’s Rey. Ridley stares down the camera and into the future of the galaxy.

Love the father daughter image :cwink:
Pretty much the same distinct color pallet in their costumes really stands out here. :cwink::::sus

Also seems obvious but(as someone else indicated) the glove here confirms Luke's hand over the Journal of the Whills from the trailer.

Luke is Just missing the infamous Battle Puffin zap-stick we've been hearing so much about.

Been waiting for those GIFs. He looks incredible. I like what they've done with the cape attachment, by the way (in TFA, it was slightly stitched to his shoulders, but here's it's got the two strings tying under his arms and around his back). ;nd

I'm not a fan of that glove. They should have just used one like in ROTJ.

Did yall see what the latest issue of the Vader comic revealed? It seems to reveal a possible likely reason for Luke going into exile for years.

That sounds an awful lot like what Luke has been doing for the past handful of years. Do yall think its safe to say that Luke became a Barash-Taker as a penance for failing his students and his nephew?

Since it's a glove and not a permanent part of his bionic hand, there's no reason he has to wear the same glove all the time.

Classic pictures there.

And I always love those Hamill fan pranks.

Bob Iger: "[Mark Hamill and I] both swore an oath to not give any secrets about the next film. But I'm gonna give one away: This is Mark's best performance as Luke Skywalker to date. And you will see that I'm right." (D23 2017)
