I told [Rian Johnson] I was shocked at how he saw Luke and how he used Luke. It took me a while to get my head around it but once you commit your job is to try to realize the director's vision as best you can. And even though I disagreed with some of it, in time I realized how wrong I was - that it was unexpected in a good way. You know, unexpected is good in a Star Wars film 'cause you've seen so much and we have to find another way to throw a curve ball and keep the audience on the edge of their seat hopefully.

I really love that outfit, but can't put my finger on why.

Same.

This might come off over the top but... I feel privileged to see a character, a hero I grew up with, being moved into a different phase of their life having seen the character in their youth and now progressed to the phase after, having seen and done things and gaining hard won wisdom and perspective. To have the original actor as well doing it, and handing the baton of new adventures and the mantle of heroism to a new generation just feels right.

I don't think that's over the top, it's a really special thing for anyone who grew up with the originals. Especially because there were always whispers back in the day about a sequel trilogy where Luke would be passing the baton to the next generation. To see it finally coming to pass after most had thought the door was shut forever on new Star Wars films is a literal dream come true. And Luke looks just as majestic as the old sage as you always imagined he would.

I don't have much to say except that I agree with all that.

We're getting something unique here with Luke. The chance to see a hero go from young beginnings all the way into advanced age. If you count his birth in Episode III, we're getting to see most of Luke's life play out. I don't know if something like this has been done before, at least not with the same actor playing the role across 40 years.

Definitely looks like Luke is switching to some traveling clothes, and cliff-side contemplating the surrounding waters.... Makes me wonder?

I know they are not doing a ESB one-to-one scene movie beats, as they did with ANH for TFA.
And they should not .

But, does anyone want or think we will see Luke (or apprentice Rey) pull a Dagobah ...my ally is the Force spiritually uplifting type scene, and raise a (once long ago hidden) X-wing out of the waters surrounding Ahch-To?

Predictable, but it would not only look great! But also serve to reveal how he is there without a ship or anyone knowing or having dropped him off.
Just saying ;)

Mark Hamill: “The fact that Luke says, ‘I only know one truth. It’s time for the Jedi to end…’ I mean, that’s a pretty amazing statement for someone who was the symbol of hope and optimism in the original films. When I first read it, my jaw dropped What would make someone that alienated from his original convictions? That’s not something that you can just make up in an afternoon, and I really struggled with this thing.” (August 9, 2017)

Mark Hamill: “But does [Luke] not know [Rey]?” “[Luke] made a huge mistake in thinking that his nephew was the chosen one, so he invested everything he had in Kylo, much like Obi-Wan did with my character. And he is betrayed, with tragic consequences. Luke feels responsible for that. That’s the primary obstacle he has to rejoining the world and his place in the Jedi hierarchy, you know? It’s that guilt, that feeling that it’s his fault, that he didn’t detect the darkness in him until it was too late.” “There’s massive amounts of backstory that is left to your imagination and I couldn’t do my job without figuring out what that was. Since it’s not really important to the main story as a whole a lot of it is just for my own process. I talked with Rian about it and went into this elaborate scenario of what happened to Luke after the end of the Return of the Jedi.” “I think he probably looks out on the horizon and wishes that he could be more effective, could be what Obi-Wan wanted him to be. But life is imperfect and without conflict there is no drama. Believe me, you’re going to see a lot of conflict in The Last Jedi. That is for sure.” (August 9, 2017)

Really looking forward to seeing Luke's story after all this time.

I've never seen a poster, on any online forum I frequent, hit the nail on the head as often as you do, at least when it come to how I personally feel.

I especially get the feeling you described when I see that shot in the teaser of Rey training with the lightsabre and Luke standing behind her. It's this overwhelming sentimental feeling of "It's so cool to see the young hero I grew up watching now take on the role of the old mentor".

I'm gonna cry once he ignites that green lightsaber with this costume on.

I love this outfit so much.

It's going to be amazing seeing Luke Skywalker actually doing stuff in this film after all these years.

I am hoping he gets a descent amount of screentime, since he got an action figure in the first wave of Last Jedi merchandise that released earlier today

I always thought that was a missed opportunity in ROTJ when Luke saw Yoda one last time before he died in Dagobah. When I was watching the movie I was expecting his X-Wing to sink in the swamp again but this time Luke would be the one to lift it out showing how powerful he had become.

Now that he's been unveiled no reason not to. I'm sure he will be spending a fair bit of time with Rey.

When Luke says "this is not going to go how to think it is" I have a feeling someone just knocked him down, either Kylo or KOR, thinking hey have him beat already, then Luke finally shows how badass he is and wipes the floor with him/them.

Really can't wait to see how his role plays out here.
