Mark Millar/Dave Gibbon's THE SECRET SERVICE - Directed By Matthew Vaughn

I typically hate Vaughn, and haven't read Millar since Civil War
But this looks like a decent bit of fun with a good cast, at least (tho I don't know who this kid is who seems to be the lead)

I saw this at an advance screening last night.

It was really, really good. When I saw the first trailer for it, I was not impressed, but I figured I would give it a go (especially since it's Matthew Vaughn and it was a free screening). This was the most fun I've had at a movie theater since Guardians of the Galaxy. It's funny. It's over the top with it's violence. It's just a good time.

I wasn't sold on Colin Firth going into it, but I know he's a good actor, so I figured I would see how he does in the role. He was totally believable as the badass he played. The whole cast was really good, including Mark Hamill (who uses a slight variation of his Joker voice, it seems).

If you are on the fence about going to see this movie, I hope this post pushes you in the right direction. Seriously, go see it.

Saw this last night at the free screening event (pretty sure Uber sponsored this one nationwide). It was ****ing fantastic. I could feel my heart rate rising during the fight scenes. Everything felt just pitch perfect. This feels like the best Bond movie in years.

Thanks for the reviews. Vaughn knows how to construct and film action sequences.

Just saw an advanced screening of this last night and absolutely loved it. Colin Firth kicks so much *** in this movie it's unreal. Plus Egerton is just amazing in the role, I'll be look forward to more from him down the line.

The Gazelle character is also probably one of the most awesome female characters I've seen in quite some really. Really great action sequences from her.

Vaughn has another winner with this one.

Going to a screening of this downtown at 7 tonight. Will follow up.

Have passes to one tonight, but I wont make it. :(

You got it from Gofobo, didn't you? LOL, that's where I got mine.

Glad to hear those reviews. I can't wait for this, it's the first movie of the year I'm looking forward to.

Saw the newest trailer (at least newest to me) last night in front of American Sniper, I'm very excited for this. I've always liked Vaughn and I was very impressed by how unique and fun he made the action bits, which can sometimes look tired and unoriginal in so many trailers. Everything seems so kinetic and fun. It will be a weekend of release watch for me and those are usually reserved for your proper DC/Marvel films.

Went to an advance preview of this last night - absolutely wonderful! Brilliantly funny, and absolutely superb in its pacing. Really does feel like a classic Bond film, injected with more straight-up humour.

Firth is a revelation as an action-star, Jackson is brilliant as a villain, and even Egerton proves to be surprisingly diverse in his performance. Also great to see Mark Strong in a role that isn't villainous

Saw this last night at the cineworld advanced screening. My 3xpectations for this were high and it didn't disappoint! This movie is straight up bonkers! Crazy, intense and violent action, the opening fight scene in which a certain jedi scientist is trying to be procured was bananas in the most effortlessly cool way possible.(the hilarious yet schocking and amazing church scene is the action set piece to beat this year btw). The movie is hilarious, very British (English) and every one was on top form. The Swedish Princess....oh yeah! Definitely seeing this again when it officially comes out.

Dang, looks like there have been a bunch of advance screenings for this movie (just now seeing this thread for the first time).

I too caught an advance screening of this (quite fortuitously I might add). The trailers I'd seen before definitely sold the movie short, and didn't really accurately convey the movie either.

I didn't realize the movie was rated R until the over-the-top violence kicked in within the first 10 minutes. :o Body parts got sliced off, people got impaled, and heads exploded! None of it was especially bloody though, not like a Quentin Tarantino film at least, just brutally violent yet graphic enough to get the point across without overdoing it with gore.

Probably the most defining aspect of the movie was its quirky yet accessible sense of humor throughout, with plenty of hilarious lines by all of the key actors - Colin Firth, Samuel Jackson (who had the most scene-stealing lines, as expected), Mark Strong, and the young guy who played the lead.

The mostly college-aged audience that I saw the movie with (the screening was at a local university) seemed to love it, there were tons of laughs at all of the comedic parts, and people cheered whenever a bad guy (there was more than just the major "villain" in the movie) got his comeuppance. I definitely recommend seeing this movie with a packed crowd.

Gotta say that anyone who doubts Colin Firth can do action should see this movie. He convincingly kicked ass and took names! The action overall was some of the most stylish & kinetic stuff that I've seen in a long time (surpassing anything that was in Kill Bill since that's the first movie that I can think of that most closely resembles its style of action), and there were tons of really-cool camera angles and equally cool stunts that had my audience either cheering or oohing/aahing.

Overall an amazingly entertaining movie that was admittedly campy but a ton of fun to watch with plenty of hilarious lines, tons of kinetic action, and protagonists to root for.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the lead young guy is cast as James Bond when he's older, maybe in about 10-15 years or so when he looks more rugged around the corners. He had just the right kind of charm & smugness that I expect from someone who plays James Bond, and I suspect he'd nail the character.

If all these advance screenings are expected to help with word of mouth, then all I can say is go see it when it comes out! I just saw it for free tonight but will probably pay money to go see it again on opening day!

my group all really liked this. I'm curious though if there will be any backlash regarding violence against women in that church scene. I found even in the context, it felt weird seeing him going all out against women

:wow:

That sounds insane. Wasn't expecting that. I am very happy to here that the scene seems to be intact. Was worried they try to cut it down at least.

Saw this last night and I have to say that this movie is awesome! The action scenes were crazy but the film was effortlessly cool. The characters style was great and the acting was excellent, especially Colin Firth and Taron Egerton. I can't wait to see it again.

Glad to hear all the positive reviews! I'm getting quite hyped for this.

Hopefully going to see this Wednesday, really looking forward to it, Vaughn is a very good director.

Vaughn is so good with the action here. Will link a full review when it gets published.

P.S. He should direct the MMPR reboot movie.

This was an immense amount of fun, never taking itself too seriously, poking fun at things that need poking and the entire cast gave it everything. Vaughn really gets this type of comic book/action film. Its probably as good as Kick-Ass just not sure if some of the British humor/references might not translate overseas but it shouldnt stop anyone enjoying the majority of this.

Glad to hear the great reviews, guys! Question, I haven't read the comic yet and was thinking about buying it this week to prep for the film. Would you guys recommend reading the book or watching the movie clean? Is the movie a faithful adaptation of the book?
