Marvel Now - Part 5

Sadly, I agree, I just don't see it lasting beyond the first year. I'd even say I'll give it twelve issues max, but I don't see it going beyond that.

It's never gonna go beyond 12 to 18 issues because Marvel will relaunch the book regardless of sales

Hey guys... could this maybe open a window for the X-Men to get back to family-like stories instead of the never ending Not-The-X-Men that's been going on for the past decade?

Hmm, so that'd be Morrison, Casey, Austin, Claremont, and Milligan.

Not the most promising of eras.

He's also partly responsible for getting Whedon's run on Astonishing going, so there's that too.

That would be awesome. For some reason, Scott vs Logan feels petty compared to Xavier vs Mags which they clearly wanted to emulate.

Ms. Marvel looks interesting, but it's a bit off putting how they are making shoving her religion to the fore of the story.

"Look guys, she's Muslim! You've never seen that before, she's totally unique!" (Y'know, except for the other Muslim characters in the Marvel universe.)

I look forward to seeing if it can find it's own voice. It would be nice to have another female hero at the forefront.
Personally, I feel like Marvel is promoting Kamala Khan the opposite way DC promoted Simon Baz. When DC promoted him, they just treated him as a character who happened to be Muslim and used his religious background and his situation in Detroit to further his character.

With this new Ms. Marvel, the way Marvel has been promoting the character, it kinda feels like a PC-advocate's wet dream come true.

Wow, how'd I forget Whedon? That helps. At least he seems to have an eye for good writers (even if I wasn't fond of what they ultimately wrote).

THE PUNISHER (2014-) #1
It seems like a staple diet of a Frank Castle fare — which is always a fast, fun ride, so I’m not complaining — and then the beginning of the story wraps round to the end and suddenly we’ve got us an unusually interesting #2 in prospect. Great start!

LOKI: AGENT OF ASGARD #1
A wishy-washy, monotonous read from start to last page, where it was pleasant to see something so unpleasant once more, but not enough to make up for the drivel that I had to wade through to get there.

I don’t know why they bothered giving Loki his own title again if they weren’t certain that they had an exceptional team on it. I doubt this run will last long.

WOLVERINE (2014-) #1

Wolverine without his healing factor! :wow: (It’s on the recap page, so not a spoiler!) This adds an interest factor.

The story isn’t boring, but it never takes off. The attempt at a sensational ending falls way short of the mark and I’m left feeling like I don’t really care what happens next. I read it through a second time, but it didn’t get any better.

MS. MARVEL (2014-) #1
There’s a lot of the Peter Parker / Marvel teenager thing going on here and I’m finding it a great read. I shouldn’t, but somewhere along the line I just know I’m going to start saying things like “totes”.

That ending is so out of left field! Just have to get the next issue! There’s so much MORE to come about powers, costume, and who’s doing this to/for her!

Full marks to Ms. Wilson! :yay:

Series writer G. Willow Wilson (herself a white Muslim) says of her character, the new Ms. Marvel: “She’s no poster child (for Islam).” Having read #1 today, I can confirm this. Character and writer are cool.

It’s also worth noting that, although Ms. Marvel and her family are Muslim by religion, their cultural background is Pakistani, not Arab.

Culture and religion are two very different layers that can be considered separately. I’m kinda hoping then that the Muslim aspect doesn’t intrude on the story, as I don’t think it would be fair to this new superhero — we don’t make a big deal out of religion for our other superheroes.

Yeah, reviews really should go there. That, and it's best to keep it to one post, because if you don't, it looks like you're spamming, and most mods don't take to kindly to that.

What this guy said :oldrazz:

Also, over in the Bought/Thought we're totally cool with spoilers. So talk away :)

Welcome to the Hype!

CBR or one of them just did a live blog on the new Wolverine
Needless to say, it sounds f***ing awful, just what fans want, "Powerless Schmuck Wolverine, w/ extendy arm claw action!"
Plus, I don't understand all the love Stegman's art is getting, all the characters look like mentally challenged chimps..

I hate stunt deaths, but that would be preferable to what they ARE doing to the character
Plus they'll still probably kill him at the end, so it's a big double f*** you to the fans

Now I know how Spidey fans feel all the time, or people excited for the Batman v Superman movie....

I would love to see the X-Men return to being the X-Men. I'm on the verge of cancelling Wolverine & The X-Men and Wolverine. First time I'd ever be not picking up an X-Book each month.

I really want to get back to two solid books of one big X-Men family with the titles just being the two teams. Oddly enough, my interest has waned ever since they started focusing more and more on returning to Xavier's being a school with students.

which exactly why I stopped reading X-men...they seem petty and everyone else just went with it.
