You may just be right. News just broke that James Gunn will be doing a reboot of Suicide Squad. It's not a sequel, it's a completely new movie. They're calling it a "relaunch".

My guess is they're just letting Matt do his own thing with the character independent of what came before, and if they decide to cross it over later, they'll just do it and not care about the continuity.

Now that we're at the end of this era I gotta say, the only worthwhile thing Snyder brought to the cinematic legacy of Batman is the costumes. Visually, Batman never looked closer to his comic book counterpart.
