Josh Boone on New Mutants

“These kids could care less about being X-Men. They’re so (messed) up and have had such horrible things happen, they’re just trying to figure out how to get out of this situation,”

"We just tried to pull this back and make it performance- and character-driven, and more grounded and credible than X-Men movies ever are.”

Every movie has to try and out ground the other it seems ;p

Trailer tomorrow? We haven't got the teaser for Sunspot yet.

This is why some people avoid washing machines.

I have to admit this does look rather lame. Eh, maybe it turns out well though, it looks like it was shot on the cheap and I do really like some of this cast.

Its off putting. I've seen genre films with a budget of $50 million that look more eXpensive than this.

The whole project's off-putting to you, let's be honest.

Anyway, new image. Sparks will fly, apparently. Sunspot, sounds like.

I hope they don't give Sunspot fire powers. Those weren't his abilities during his New Mutant days.

Hello! First post. I've been a lurker for a while, I am very intrigued and excited for this movie.

Regarding sunspot and fire powers, you have to ask yourself how well does this look transfer to film?

Especially in what appears to be a dark dreary setting. I remain confident that perhaps Roberto powers up with flame and has an appearance similar to his comic self.

Looking forward to posting more. i have a lot of thoughts about this movie.

I hope it looks similar to the comics unlike Dofp's Sunspot.

Boone seems to be going the grounded route, I don't think we'll see the similarities in this one.

We already have a girl with a magic sword and a werewolf and such. People keep misinterpreting what grounded means these days, which is usually interchangeable with emotional and whatnot.

Time will tell. As of now, I don't like what I'm seeing.

Yeah. "Grounded" is very much an inkblot word that appeals to studios. It can mean anything from "nothing extranormal" to "relatable and human." The context of the quote feels closer to the latter, but the emphasis on there not being uniforms, etc. is closer to the former (keep in mind, they don't appear to be telling a story related to the Xavier mansion and X-Men so uniforms wouldn't make sense, but the emphasis on no uniforms feels like an emphasis on avoiding comic bookiness. Doesn't mean that's what the finished product will show, but I think there's evidence of both interpretations of "grounded.").
