Having actually seen the mall scene now, I can see why it was cut now. It's a fun nostalgia trip and it's awesome to see Jubilee, but it's four minutes of a film that I would've rather used on developing the Horsemen or something else. Scott, Jean and Kurt get plenty of time throughout the film that the mall scene doesn't really shortchange them that much and a it would've been the third montage.

To address the film's critique of not doing much with the 80s setting, they should've just tied it to more historical event like the Vietnam War or Cuban Missile Crisis in order to make it feel more 80s. The whole Apocalypse disarming the world's superpowers is fine and all, but maybe tying it to the Cold War more directly would've been better.

On a more positive note, man does Singer just know how to make Kurt lovable. I really do like Singer's more deadpan humor. Now just give Kurt his sword!

thank you! I find it very strange how Singer could ever believe that Apocalypse's Cerebro scene, the mall scene and the Quicksilver scene could all work back to back?!? This is such a tonal mess! How could they believe that they would make these scenes work together in the cutting room (and they really didn't...). I don't get it.

yeah, the tone is all over the place. it could have worked if the mall scene happens before the cerebro scene and apocalypse's arrival. the problem for me would be quicksilver - his scene, while really entertaining and fun - a standout really, wouldn't work with the tone of total destruction. i would have kept the mall as is, then cerebro and then quicksilver with a different score and less humor.

I always assumed, based on interviews, that the Quicksilver scene would be a neat inversion to his DOFP scene, in that it would be more of a 'race against time, real stakes are actually happening here' thing. Singer after all described the scene as 'bittersweet'. Who knew that the scene actually turned out to be an exact replica of the DOFP scene, tone-wise.

And the mall scene is so interesting because for once, we actually get to see mutants being accepted instead of hearing about it in passing. This would be such a refreshing take on the mutant metaphor, like the Grant Morrison run in the comics. Instead, we glossed over this important period of mutant history for them go to back to being hated and feared again, as implied by the end of the movie in the aftermath of Apocalypse's destruction. Although since Magneto was seemingly publicly forgiven for helping the X-Men defeat Apocalypse, maybe future movies won't hit the 'hated and feared' button too hard and actually show a wide range of responses to mutants, which would be more interesting.

Quicksilver's scene was such a catastrophe and placed totally wrong. It is a very good example for mindless action and a bad script. Maybe some people enjoyed the scene. Whatever. General audiences are not particularly smart when it comes to the interpreation of art works/movies...

Only a more serious tone and different music could have saved this scene.

To quote Mystique: Just because there's not a war doesn't mean there's peace. They still hate and fear us, they're just more polite about it.

We don't need to see humans throwing stones at mutants every time they see them on the street to keep the marginalization metaphor alive. Minorities today are not in danger of extermination anytime soon, but they are subject to systemic marginalization. Have you read Grant Morrison's run? Mutants are seen as 'cool' by humans, but the dark side of being 'cool' is that corporations started commercializing their body parts so that they can be grafted onto humans.

Yeah I totally understand the dilemma Singer likely had to face. Easy to say with hindsight that he should have gone the other direction, but it would have been a tough call and it paid off in a way, since many people do like the scene.

Lol may I suggest the comicbookresources community? Their discussions are largely about the comic books, not so much the movies (the movies are largely met with disdain there), but they seem sympathetic to your views (probably the reason why most of them don't bother with the movies in the first place XD).

I hear you. I work in media/marketing and it's dominated by old, straight, white men. Many, many years ago there was a local paper that refused to even cover a gay pride event. Thankfully that has changed but mostly because newspaper sales have dropped, the focus is on the internet and they are eager to get more 'clicks'.

However, there's a still a long way to go in beating chauvinism, sexism, racism and homophobia.

I wouldn't want to see the hatred against mutants being made too intense in these films, they are 'heavy' enough as it is... but i would like to see minority characters getting a stronger role.

There is diversity in the casting but not really in the narrative focus and characterisation.
