Official Contest of Marvels II Discussion Thread

Heh. :D I'll take that for a compliment.

By the way, how long will the comp still be running for? I'm leaving for vacation sunday the 22th (of July).

Well, it could be over quickly if you concede defeat in most of our matches this week. :woot:

I'm actually not sure. It's going to be going pretty quickly; but, how long is your vacation? Since that will be right near the end, I'm sure we'd hold off if you had one of the final characters.

Two weeks, so yeah. Originally we had CoM calculated for just before it, but with recent lags and stuff... Either way, assuming I make it to the final round, I would really appreciate the chance to debate.

Ok, we'll cross the bridge when we come to it; but, I think we'll still have a few characters left on that date, if not the big final battle. If you have a character left, we'd wait for you to get back.

Let's take a look at some probabilities. Zoken, Primemover and Darthphere are out of the competition, so they now have an absolute zero chance at winning this competition. Each possessing 7 characters, Phaed, Ky and me dominate in the amount of characters left (each holding 22% of the characters). Wieg comes in close with 5 characters, good for 16%. After that, the other competitors hold only one or two characters.

Bracket-wise, with each bracket having four matches, things come into view more closely. Phaed and me both have 50% at winning Bracket 1. Bracket 2 is divided amongst four competitors, all an equal 25%. The same goes for Bracket 3. Phaed has dominates Bracket 4 with 50% though. The same goes for Bracket 5, in which Wieg is garantueed the chance to win it. Bracket 6 is another 4-way match, and Kytrigger dominates Bracket 7 with 50%, which he also does in Bracket 8. Assuming those with a 50% share win (exempt is Bracket 1), Kytrigger has the best record in the brackets, claiming two of them.

Based on developments in this round however, I am garantueed a chance to win Bracket 1, because Phaed has conceeded our Hellstrom/Nile match, and Ky is garantueed a chance to win Bracket 5, because I conceed our match there. That tilts Bracket 1 in my favour, and ups Ky's chances in Bracket 5, where both he and Wieg dominate with 50%. Factoring this in, Kytrigger still has the best chances.

Kytrigger essentially has the best chances, followed by Wieg, and then Phaed and me.

Of course, everything is still open to change.

Awesome. Thanks Phaed (and the rest of ya'all).

Actually, your vacation hits my "very little computer usage" time. As many know, Harry Potter's 7th book comes out on the 21st of July. The last book was ruined when I read online who dies at the end of the book. After that, I stopped reading book 6, and it's just this week I picked it up again, making sure I'm ready for the 7th book. This time, I am not going to be spoiled by some jerk on The Hype. I'll buy the book at midnight, and most of you won't see me until I finish the book. This way, your vacation comes at a good time.

(About the only thing I'll be doing online is watching the SuperPass of Big Brother 8! I'm happy it will be on ShowtimeToo also.)

Just a reminder that debating ends tomorrow. I'm pretty much finished with my debating. I think only one or two matches would be rebutted if anything comes up. Needless to say, many are going to have a lot of reading to do.

Responding to my own comment above about Harry Potter, I thought I'd tell about something that happened waaaaay back when Alien 3 debuted at the theater. We ex and I had a friendship with another couple, and I wanted to see Alien 3 but my ex didn't. The wife of the friendship wanted to see it, but her husband didn't. So, the two of us saw Alien 3 while my ex and the husband went to see Lethal Weapon 3. It was opening weekend, Alien 3 was on 3 screens, and the line-ups were humongous. When we all got out of our respective movies, we're walking by those large lines and my ex and the husband ask about how Alien 3 ended. Of course, I whisper, "Sigorney Weaver dies in the end," and at the top of his voice with everyone in line able to hear, he shouts, "SIGOURNEY WEAVER DIES IN THE END??!!??" That was one large line of pissed off people!

So, my question to you guys is have you ever been ruined about the a movie, book or something else that you didn't want revealed to you?

Many, many times. My friend at work has the uncanny skill to mention something important in the next episode of a series that I have recorded, but not yet watched.

And, of course, there are the spoilers that get put into the non-spoilers section. Or those wonderful threads where the spoiler is right there in the title.

Trailers have become really bad about spoilers too. Adding key moments into trailers that ruin whole sections of the movie. So, now I rarely ever watch anything but the first trailer for a movie.

And there's the Harry Potter spoiler you mentioned, plus another you didn't mention. Even though I had no intention of reading the books, I didn't want to know anything about them ahead of time that would spoil the movies. But those spoilers were everywhere. I even think my mom ruined one of them for me.

Uggg...I couldn't imagine not getting spoilers for Harry Potter before watching the movies. Plus, the books are so good. The first two movies really crammed most of the books into them; but, so much is left out of the last two movies and probably the third, too. (Hermione's S.P.E.W. for example isn't seen at all, and it's some of the funniest moments in the books.) You know whatever is suppose to happen in the final book is going to be revealed looong before the last movie comes out in summer of 2010.

I think the last spoiler that ruined something for me is Captain America #25. I didn't find out until comic day when the book came out; but, it was already all over the news and on Howard Stern that morning.

I forgot about Cap. I open cnn.com and there it was on the front page. And that friend at work says 'Captain America is dead?', just in case I didn't already read it. ;)

And I didn't get to read that issue until a couple of weeks later (I was only about halfway through Civil War), so that made catching up so much more fun. :whatever:

Harry's death in SM3 was spoiled for me as well as the ending of the Perfect Storm when my sister walked in and said "Yeah, isn't it sad how they all die in the end?" during the last 25 mins of the movie the other day.

Yay for voting.

crap. I thought I had more time to debate since I've been busy as hell this week. Oh well

I keep wincing during this conversation because I'm waiting for someone to ruin something Harry Potter for me. Reminder... I'm reading Order Of The Phoenix right now (though I will be done for the movie's opening) and I'll be reading the next two after that one as well. So try to refrain from spoilers until I finish those. I'm loving the books and I don't want any spoilers. I think I know who dies at the end of book 6 (at least, it's one of two people that I think I heard dies) but I'm not completely sure, so I want it to stay that way.

I'm actually about 2/3 through the book right now and wanted to finish the rest of it tonight and tomorrow, but my brother's flying in from florida so we have to clean the house up tonight, and then tomorrow we'll probably be hanging out. I'm bummed... kinda. Happy... but bummed :(

And I officially started writing my new book and want to write that too... I'm so conflicted.

When does voting end? I want to vote but I won't be able to do it until later tonight(PST)

Hey, I haven't read any of the the books. :D But I do have to talk about one spoiler:

Vader is Luke's father

I know. I couldn't believe it either! ;) :p

Hey Prime! Good to see ya alive. Voting will end on Friday; so, you have tons of time.

I'm seeing Live Free Die Hard tonight. It's getting excellent reviews. As for Harry, I won't reveal any spoilers. I only have less than 100 pages to go on book 6; so, I'm all ready for book 7 on the 21st. Ever since book 4, we've done the midnight opening at our local Barnes and Noble. That's always a lot of fun, and the bookstore is absolutely packed with people. (It was when the last book came out that I got a humongous 1000+ book that listed pretty much every comic ever made, and I started keeping good track of what I have in order to fill my holes in my collection. I just got on ebay the eight 3-issue miniseries of Conan that Marvel released after the original Conan The Barbarian series ended. Most of those books are impossible to find with the online stores; so, I was happy to get it for about 15 dollars, including shipping charges. )

Live Free Die Hard was a really fun movie. Good action throughout, and the old cop/young adult mix works really well. I was surprised to see it be Die Hard's first PG-13 rated movie; but, the loss of an R-rating didn't seem to hurt it much. Obviously, no F words, and even the classic "Yippie Kay Ya MUth..." isn't said in full. (Probably will have an unrated version when the DVD comes out.) But, you have so much fun watching this film, as I said, that you really don't mind the slightly toned-down feel. It's better than Spidey 3 or F4 2. I even liked it better than 1408. (Not sure if I put it above Surf's Up. Nothing like a really good laugh.)

Now, I hope to see Sicko this week, and I'll probably take the kids to Ratattoie on Sunday.

I am so jealous of you guys. None of these movies are out here yet and will not be out till the end of July/beginning of August. :(

Well, we haven't gotten up to 10 votes for a while. We have two ties; so, most people will have the weekend off. Harlekin, Wiegeabo, JH and I will be debating our rematches, and I'll start voting on Monday (unless some of you don't think you can get a debate on your rematch up; I figure it won't be too difficult, as most of us will be repeating things already said).

The difference in these matches will be knowledge of the other character and a location difference. If the votes stay the same, it will go over to Sparta's thread. Of course, we can't advance until we have a winner in these two matches.

LOCATION: HYDRO-BASE

Hydro-Base is a fictional base in the Marvel Universe. It first appeared in Sub-Mariner #61, created by Steve Gerber, Bill Everett, and Win Mortimer (May 1973).
Hydro-Base is a floating seacraft disguised as a natural island floating off the coast of North America outside US territorial waters. Its first known user was the mad ecologist Dr. Herman Frayne, aka Doctor Hydro, who used it both as a laboratory and an airbase on which to land hijacked planes. Doctor Hydro planned to turn the planes’ passengers into amphibious people, using Terrigen Mist he acquired from the renegade Inhuman, Maelstrom. After Doctor Hydro died, his subjects (now known as the Hydro-Men) inhabited the pseudo-island, along with the marine scientist known as Stingray (Dr. Walter Newell). The Hydro-Men lived on the island until Mister Fantastic and Inhuman scientists found a way to cure them. Stingray continued to use the facility as an oceanographic laboratory, and a residence for himself and his wife, who would serve as caretakers. When the FAA revoked the Avengers’s flight privileges from their mansion, Stingray invited them to create a private airfield on Hydro-Base. The Avengers later moved their headquarters to Hydro-Base when their mansion was destroyed by the Masters of Evil, and Stingray became an unofficial member of the Avengers until they returned to their old base. Hydro-Base was destroyed however by Doctor Doom, although Walter and his wife were able to escape.
