Official: Prince of Persia Next-Gen Thread

It was not an RPG like Final Fantasy or Pokemon. Calling Kingdom Hearts an RPG is like calling The Legend of Zelda a puzzle game. They only contain minor elements of these genres but they are both Action-Adventure games.
No it wasnt a Final Fantasy and games dont have to be laid out like that series in order to be considered an RPG. FF is a traditional RPG and KH belongs to a sub genre, the action-RPG. Saying Kingdom Hearts isnt and that its just an action adventure title, then one can say well its not a Tomb Raider or Prince of Persia.

Just got my LE from Gamestop. They barely got any in. I think the guy told me they had 3 and he took 2 of them, so I got the only one in the drawer. All of them were PS3 and no 360 versions came in. I was like huh? Im sure alot of people that preordered are going to be pissed off.

Im kind of disappointed with this so called LE. The packaging is some cheap coardboard box that holds the regular game case. I dont know, I guess I was expecting something like the MGS4 LE set. Interestnig that the game case doesnt have a Not for Resale tag on the back like most other sets. As far as the soundtrack goes, its not even on a CD. Its a blu-ray so I can only use it on my PS3. Hope someone is able to rip it bc I like the theme that was in the E3 trailer. Its in a small plain white cardboard insert. The content is HD, so Im glad about that. I wonder what they did with the 360 version since it has no BR.

About to play the game now. Will post thoughts later

KH's RPG elements are too few and basic for me to consider it an RPG in any sub-genre. But whatever. Back to PoP.

My mom was able to pick up the game for me. She got the first one and it has all the codes so I'm happy I didn't get ****ed over again like I did with Banjo-Kazooie. I'll probably save it for Christmas.

Hey, what do you expect, it was free. :)

Okay, well work's done so I'm off to see if my GameStop has any copies left. Hopefully they do.

This has got to be the most artisticly visually stunning game Ive ever played. Its like a living painting. The game is beautiful and I can definetly see it getting some best graphics nominations for 2008.

I was worried about the combat love it. There are several combos and the moves are fun to pull off. Having Elika involved makes things interesting. It might get old though considering theres no upgrading of the Prince's abilities and/or different weapons but htere are unlockable combos and Elika gets new moves.

I can definetly see the Assasins Creed inspiration in this game especially when it comes to the jumping and platforming. Thats a good thing bc that was that game's strongest aspect.

Dialogue so far is terrible. Can be a bit cheesy and its mainly the Prince. I wish he were more humble and not so much of a jerk. Doesnt quite jive well with the overall theme of the game. Im not minding Elika. The voice acting is alright but again the Prince is bothering me. Why couldnt they get a guy with an accent. Its bothering me that he's talking like an American. As far as the game being too easy, well like some of the reviews stated, thats my least favorite part of this. I wish Elika saving you was the easy mode with you having the option to turn her off if you want a more challenging experience.

Here's a screenshot of the SoT Prince:

So it makes Elika look like Farah?

I'm not impressed with how the SoT skin looks.

so how's the story? I don't mean explain what's going on, just how you like it so far. That's one of the main aspects for a game for me, if the story is unique and different. Otherwise.... meh.

Yes, the skin is for Farah.

I havent gotten too far into it but so far its a bit meh. I didnt care for how it started. I think the main character is the main reason why Im not identifying with it. I just cant connect to him and wish they give him a personality transplant. He comes across as an american frat boy. Totally not what one would expect here. "This place is the back of the back of beyond" Yes, he actually said that.

Well, he IS supposed to be a rogueish Han Solo type. But clearly they went overboard with that. But I don't hate. He does have a couple of funny quips.

At least it's better than emo-prince from Warrior Within. (then again, ANYTHING's better than that)

I really like Elika though. Kind of reminds me of Ico, only she's infinitely more kickass than Yorda.

I think Ebgames accidently sent me 2 limited editions.

Quick Review:

The art direction is fresh, the acrobatics are breathtaking and the cinematic fight scenes are epic.

I'm digging the fact that you can't fall to your death...
It really bothered me when I completed a long sequence in the SoT trilogy and I had to begin a whole section again just because I had to find a spot to jump through "trial and era."

The camera is REALLY good. You never have to mess with it. The option is there but this is the best Camera I've seen in a game for a while now.

The sound is excellent. They returned to their roots completely within the music. It really sets the atmosphere for the game.
from the sword battles to the lands to the sound of a collapsing room. They really got it right.

Voice acting is pretty good.
Everyone fits there role from the bad guys to Elika...well except for the Prince.
While I love Nolan North's work (Uncharted.) While he still turns in a great performance. He just doesn't fit the bill here. Everyone has an accent except for The prince. They should have checked that a bit...but it is very much so forgivable. He didn't turn turn in a bad performance. It won't make you cringe (I'm looking at you Mike Vaughn from Spider-man Web of Shadows)

One thing about boss fights that annoy me is when ever Elika gets knocked out during a fight. She can still magically save you at the last moment. It really doesn't make sense, and brings down the combat a bit....I personally think this should be the one time you are allowed to die.

but in the end.

I love this game. They turned out something that is truly special here. Wish they had a difficulty option....and I have encountered a couple of elika glitches (such as her getting stuck.)

I would recommend this to anyone that loves a good experience. Definitely would not recommend this to most hardcore players (The ability to "never die" might hurt alot of the games excitement.)

9.4/10

I got my copy from GameSpot yesterday and played through a bit of it last night. One thing I noticed is that it's really, really easy to get turned around if you don't actually use the compass much. I wound up unlocking two other Fertile Grounds instead of the one I had intended to go to because I was trying to get some light seeds and then I just went off in a direction without the compass, thinking I was going the right way.

The best parts of the game so far are the visuals and the platforming (the one-button setup in no way diminishes the fun of it, I'm happy to report). Timing is still hugely important, which makes the game feel thoroughly interactive. Reports of the game "playing itself" are greatly exaggerated. Visually, the game is pretty stunning. I'm not a huge fan of how elongated the not-prince and Elika are, but I appreciate that it's a stylistic choice and it works well enough. The transitions from corrupted land to Fertile Ground are absolutely stunning, as are the title screens' painting-like transitions.

The combat's kind of meh, since moves chain together so fluidly that I'm sometimes not even sure how what I'm pressing corresponds to what the not-prince is doing. Also, it's very pattern-based, which bores me. I don't like having to determine a boss' pattern like we're back in the 8-bit era, and my general inclination to rush bosses instead of patiently blocking and waiting for an opening usually ends with me getting my ass kicked. It still looks very pretty, though, and it serves as a decent way to break the game up so it's not constant jumping from place to place.

The story seems pretty predictable so far. The not-prince is just that: not a prince. He's an adventurer and graverobber who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when Elika fell on him. It seems like he's going to help her seal Ahriman back up and, over the course of their journey, they'll fall madly in love and get married at the end, making the not-prince a prince finally. This is pretty apparent in the dialogue in certain areas, but I won't spoil it for those who haven't reached those areas yet. The Tower of Ahriman is the one I'm thinking of in particular, if anyone cares.

Speaking of the dialogue (no pun intended), it's about half-funny and half-stupid. The writers have moments of genuinely funny banter between the not-prince and Elika, but more often than not it seems like they're trying too hard and it sounds silly. Add to that the fact that Elika and the not-prince both sound like they came straight out of California thanks to their voice actors and the whole thing comes off a bit awkward.

So, 4 Fertile Grounds into the game, I'm pretty impressed with it. Even though the dialogue is a bit clunky and the voice-acting is pretty awful, the not-prince and Elika's growing, grudging attraction is playing out just right, neither too rushed nor too slow and boring. Everything else is pretty solid, too. Having the game world be one contiguous whole is nice. Reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus, actually.

I am 3 grounds and one special power into the game. I'm enjoying it. Love the platforming. I don't mind the combat, I'm starting to get the hang of it. I never really stand around blocking until I see an opening, I just go for it with a nice mix of the 4 buttons and it's working out fine so far.

Like with Assassin's Creed, the platforming is definitely the highlight. Which is not a bad thing at all.

Nope. It's why I enjoy games like PoP and Tomb Raider in the first place. Figuring out how to get from point A to point B is almost always more fun than fighting hordes of bad guys in games like these.

I was concerned about the lack of combat from early previews but the one on one battles are spaced out well and are in many ways more fun then one sometimes became button mashing endless hordes of enemies in the last trilogy of games

Altair looks awesome running around in this game. I loved Assassin's Creed.

For anyone who didn't pre-order, this is the code for the Sands of Time skins.

Anyone else notice that on the cover, the Prince's hair is blonde, but in the game its dark brown-black? Elika's hair is also blonde on the menu page, but brown in the game.

I also noticed a little Jake Gyllenhall in this Prince vs the older ones. Anyways, this game is awesome...I'm halfway through it right now and its very addictive. I'm glad that the character cannot die as it doesn't break the action one bit. This allows the player to not llose momentum while playing...which, in my opinion, makes the gameplay very smooth and addictive.

I still wind up button-mashing, since the animations for the attacks are so long that stringing them together winds up turning into a guessing game as to which of your button presses got through for the next attack and which didn't. So if I want athletic and Elika combos, I basically throw Elika at the dude and start mashing Y and A repeatedly, hoping it'll string together. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

Also, the fact that a lot of combos start off with sword attacks kind of sucks because everybody--everybody--blocks before you can actually get through a full 3-X sword combo to chain it to another mode of attack. And then if you block, the bosses' combos never give you an opening to attack, even if it looks like there's an opening because they're drawing back for a block-breaking attack for a ridiculously long time, so you wind up holding the block button for forever and a day or, more likely, until the boss pushes you into a wall or onto a ledge and you have to spam X to get back up and start the whole stupid process again.

Basically, for me, the combat system has felt really broken once you get past the very first four Fertile Grounds and the bosses discover how to block. :o
