Finally on my way to my second viewing!

Many of you are going to hate me for writing this, but it is what it is:

Quite honestly, this wasn't much better than many of the other X films. While the plot was tighter and performances were more enjoyable, it still felt like an average film to me. Hell even the special effects weren't up to today's standards in areas. A lot of this film felt like obvious set pieces at times, or rather that something was off.

They completely ignored/sidestepped things or didn't bother to answer things from X3 and The Wolverine for pure convenience and that annoyed me. We also got what felt like only 2 main action sequences/scenes in a film where there should have been more. The fights against the sentinels were very lackluster, even compared to the 90s cartoon I feel.

The 70s stuff was well done though some of it was cheesy. A lot of laughs at moments were there shouldn't have been at my viewing. I am glad however that Logan wasn't at the forefront as much as I thought he would be. The character usage felt more balanced this time around.

I think my biggest gripe, like with several other films in recent years, is that too much was shown in preview clips/trailers/TV spots. There was very little to see that wasn't already revealed, and you could almost piece the film together easily enough without even seeing it.

Of the comic films this year I'd rank it 3rd, but only because ASM2 was more enjoyable to me (I am a bigger Spidey fan than X-Men), though DoFP is far ahead with its story, characters and assembly. I just didn't find it as fun/entertaining.

I give it a 7/10, and would rank the X films in order now as:

The Wolverine
X2
FC / DoFP
X1
X3
Origins

The best thing about this awesome movie for me was..... CYCLOPS!!! So glad he is back and I can't wait to see more of him in the series.

Reading his review, I pictured him writing every word with his teeth baring.
I loved the part where he credited the action to the preViz/second unit team. He only does that when it he really has to.

Figured he'd at least give it up for the quick silver stuff.
Some people do have to feel contrary to everyone else and show it off. I just don't read certain reviewers who you know are going to **** all over something because either it's popular or they have an axe to grind with the franchise or someone related to it.

Quite a good movie. I was a bit disappointed though, as it wasn't quite as mind blowing as I thought itd be. The acting was great and there was some okay action. What it lacked was a moment where I was like, "HOLY CRAP!" Which even the so-so Godzilla had. There's no big moment I can point to in this movie that had me all tensed up with excitement. I also think a lot of the future characters were wasted potential. Besides Blink and Sunspot, the new mutants were pretty lame. The future mutants simply did not get enough to do. And when they finally did, it wasn't super exciting. Storm hardly spoke, Colossus said like one word, and even future Magneto had hardly anything to do or so (which was a big minus to me, as I love McKellan as Magneto). The past cast and Wolverine were great however, so that was good. And I loved future Prof. X. Stewart was in perfect form. Dinklage as the villain was okay, but not incredibly special. Overall I really enjoyed the film though. The story was very interesting. 8/10

I think this was the best one in the franchise so far. All of the characters got their moment to shine. All the future scenes were dope. I agree that sunspot was kinda lame, but Blink was cool. I didn't really have any gripes with the folks from the past. Just the right amount of wolverine. A little too much mystique. I wrote a full review at my link below.

Well he has jumped at alot of opportunities to put this style of direction down over the past few years. Colourful costumes and fully embracing the 'fun' of comics and such has been what he's been pushing for a while now given the past few years of cbms.

The quick silver outfit got alot of his contempt upon it's reveal.

The only gripe I really had with the film had to do with the credits.

Why the F*** was Anna Paquin listed above Ellen Page, Famke Jansen and James Marsden? I mean, seriously WTF? Those three actors actually ACTED, with speaking parts and (in Ellen's case especially) with great emotion and even comedic timing.

Anna was on screen for literally 3 seconds...and she didn't utter a damn word. Billing her above Ellen especially was REALLY inappropriate. There is no way to justify that. :down

I'll tell you what was a missed oppotunity, not have the future battle at the Baxter Building, they have the movie rights to do it. The comic fans would geeked out and the GA would be given a peek/reminder of the upcoming FF movie.

I agree. That would have been a cool easter egg. I don't think Fox really has a handle on how to do this connected universe thing yet.

If they had simply filmed the climax in a big office building in New York, fans would simply have put 2 and 2 together but they have the climax in (you'd think) China with one of the worst set designs ever. The cinematography should be shot for lighting the scene so poorly. It looked like was it was, a set.

I'm hovering around a 7/10 - 7.5/10 range. Good, not great. Best X-Men movie yet? Yeah, I'll go along with that. But it's marginal.

Just got back from the Cinema, good to have singer back and the X men movie theme. The movie was nice, but X2 is still the best for me, but definitely its got me interested in the Apocalypse sequel . so far so good for comic book movies this year

CATWS-9/10
XMDOFP-7/10
AS2-5/10

Not an X-Men fan then?
FC blew me away, I think the rest of X-Men movies are 'okay'. FC is the only X movie in my CBM top 5.

I just don't love First Class like so many people do. It's a solid film and considering the thin time restraints, Vaughn and Goldman whipped up a good script and did a damn good job. I liked the tone more than the style of the film. But about the only thing I loved was Xavier and Magneto. It just doesn't sink in for me like Singer's films do. There's that element of gravitas that is needed for X-Men that Singer is better equipped for than Vaughn.

I felt more gravitas in FC than I have for any other Xmen movie.
Magneto's confession to Shaw before driving the coin through his head is more powerful (for me) than any scene in the X franchise.

Nope, never was an X-Men fan. Nor a Fantastic Four fan either, but I'm more familiar with them. Stan Lee ensured that I'd never be an X-Men fan when he chose to just make them all mutants because it would be easier. That just seemed lazy to me in comparison to stuff like the Avengers. And I think that's one of the reasons why the X-Men in film is unlikely to ever have the mass appeal as the Avengers. For the most part they're a group of characters who the GA doesn't know enough about or care all that much about. The only 3 characters we really know in any sizable way are Wolverine, Professor X and Magneto. The rest are completely disposable even if they've had a lot of screen time(like Storm). The X-Men franchise suffers from too many characters spread to thinly to ever give a **** about any of them.

I was wondering how come Kitty, Iceman and Colossus were with the other band of mutants at the start and not with Xavier, Storm, Magneto and Wolverine in the X-Jet?

Because when they land the jet and come out, Kitty says "professor..." and Bishop, Blink, Sunspot and Warpath didn't seem to know who they where?

I pretty much feel the same way. I've gravitated to Prof X, Raven (as she is close to Prof X) and Magneto. Everyone else I can take or leave and I now outright dislike Wolverine for hogging so much screen time in the X movies despite Wolverine being my favorite X-Men in the comics. But I was never a big X fan with comics or the big screen or the animated series for that matter. I only truly 'love' FC.
