I don't think this is a Target only exclusive but they were the first to put it up. It says that the release date is April 8th, 2014 so I assume that will be the same date for the regular theatrical Bluray/DVD also.

How was the first extended edition? Did it have the same amount of extras that the previous extended editions have had?

My brother bought it the other week but we havent had a chance to watch it yet, seems plenty of extras on there though.

Someone I know sat down to watch the first Hobbit movie yesterday. They turned it off about half way through and said it was too much. Too silly, slow and boring for them. Which I largely have to agree. These films aren’t something I’d re-watch all that often.

^I disagree, especially about the 1st movie, the 2nd I dont know yet. As long as I have the time I will watch the 1st movie a lot.

i think there's around 8 hours of behind the scenes footage and documentaries.

Not as much as The Lord of the Rings films. Not nearly as much added material into the film (mainly a handful of songs and some other minor stuff). It also only has the one audio commentary (by Jackson and Boyens) compared to four for each LOTR film.

The making of documentary/production notes are about as extensive as they were on the LOTR films though.

Weird, usually they've been saving that type of set for the Extended Edition.

:hmm makes me wonder if they'll have another collectors item set with the extended edition or not (way to make my life difficult WB).

I'll be honest, I don't want to see Hobbit 2 ever again.

The more i think about it and watch it the more I come to this same conclusion. I liked it on the first viewing, but now after closer examination its just odd. It doesnt even seem like its in the same universe in terms of technique and execution with the other four films. Its like someone else made this film. I know Jackson has slowly been slipping, but he went off the rails with this film. Its as if Boyens ran the show entirely. What the hell happened to you, Peter?:(

Even Laketown was off. Even though it looked nice with the effects, it never felt like a real place, nor did it feel like they were outside. NOr did I know the geography of the town.

I don't know. Felt like the book to me. More whimsical and fantastical than Lord of the Rings. Love the two so far. Can't wait for There and Back Again.

Eh, I enjoyed the first and the second one a whole bunch. They're not without their problems but I still can see them multiple times.

After watching hours and hours of bonus content on the blu ray, I'm definitely starting to appreciate the first film more. And I can totally see the reasoning behind replacing the practical goblins with CGI goblins

DOS doesn't feel like a well rounded experience. It doesn't have the slower moments and pauses of the past four films; it runs at a single, fast pace all the way through like a Bourne movie. That imo constricts its scope a bit. Makes it feel smaller than it should be.

My thoughts as well.

I know it's an opinion, but this I just cannot see. Laketown felt wholly real and was one of the real triumphs of the film.

As someone else said, this film wasn't without it's faults and it's most certainly on a different level of quality in comparison to LOTR, but I will still watch it countless times. I just love this version of Middle-earth that Jackson and co have created.
