Smaug was pretty good, though. Up until that unintentionally hilarious scene with the Gold-1000.

I would say up until his intelligence was being continually undermined by a band of goofy, stupid dwarves.

One thing that bothers me about discussing these films, is it seems to come down to "well it is more Tolkien on the big screen". Like that is enough, even if the films are badly crafted and lack the essence and ideas of the book.

And really, what is with blaming the source material? You are darn right the book is much better then the films. This has been Jackson's style since ROTK and it is why he hasn't made a truly good film since The Two Towers.

It is not hard to mess up on adapting the books as they have the intellectual and artistic complexity of cotton candy. That's not even touching on how much Rowling borrowed/stole from Tolkien.

You do realize that Tolkien's entire series "borrows" heavily from other works right?

RoTK was a fantastic film.

I find RotK to be a mediocre film, that collapses in on itself as Jackson starts his long descent into more is simply more. That and he made it so melodramatic. It is like Jackson went tone deaf.

That is nice Tim. But any film that makes me want to turn it off before the credits, I think is mediocre. How many times can you slow down the film, drown the film out with Gladiator music, and not end it? I love Fellowship. One of my favorite films. TTT has its problems, but I adore it as well. I can't get through RotK. It is way too long, while missing the content that could have made it work. The RotK is just like the Hobbit films.

The LOTR films are three of my favorite movies, ever. That being said, I'm not blind to issues within them and RotK has the most out of the three. That being said, there is more that is "right" than "wrong" with the film.

Also, in the first two films there were no quick solutions to anything. The green ghost wave washing everything away is just kind of underwhelming.

Also the action. Legolas sliding down a flight of stairs was impressive in Two Towers. In the next film he becomes Fed Flinstone, slighting up and down Elephant trunks killing 60 people at a time. Return of the King was the beginning of Legolas a cartoonishly unstoppable death machine, which reached ridiculous heights in Desolation of Smaug.

The fight with Urukhai at the end of Fellowship has so much weight to every blow, and Two Towers just had a sense of dread about it. The action in Return of the King was almost superfluous.

I agree with everything. Although watching Legolas go to work in DoS on the big screen was something to behold.

She did copy a lot from Tolkien. Also Molesworth. I don't object to Potter as a synthesis of other ideas, but there is barely an original thought in it.

ROTK is probably my favourite of the three LOTR films. It has a huge heart. Of course it's over the top and ridiculous and Jackson did go a bit far with being overdramatic. However, it is still a beautifully crafted film.
