A "forty-five minute fight"? :(

IGN has posted one of the new Beorn scenes. It's the one of him and Gandalf discussing the Tombs.

After making the Lord of the Rings trilogy and two previous Hobbit films, Jackson has learned that epic warfare can be surprisingly boring, especially if you’re not watching people you care about. “We have a rule that we’re not allowed to go more than two or three shots of anonymous people fighting without cutting back to our principal characters,” he says. “Otherwise the audience just ends up with battle fatigue.”

That is not why the audience ends up with battle fatigue. A 45 minute battle is why people get battle fatigue. Not to mention all the other action that will undoubtedly precede that battle.

I've so far enjoyed Jackson's Middle Earth battles so I'm likely to enjoy this one as well. I'm over curious about the look of the Battle tho. Will the Battle look more like those we saw in LOTR? Or more like the Battle of Moria that we saw in AUJ with dramatic lighting and lots of cgi and digital grading?

I'm also really curious about the film's theatrical runtime. If it has a 45 minute climax it must be pretty long.

Looks like it body wise. Maybe a Troll with a fancy helmet?

Will it be a forty-five minutes of uncut battle or will there be other scenes splitting it up? Because I'm sure Two Towers had forty-five minutes of battle but it had scenes like the Entmoot to cut it up.

Just read over on Blu-ray.com that Jackson has said that he is shooting for a 140 minute runtime, and that when Empire Magazine visited the set Jackson had the runtime at 150 minutes.

2:20 or 2:30? That actually sounds sort of short for this. If it's a 45-minute battle that means there will only be about an hour or so leading up to it (with the rest of the time budgeted for after the battle). Doesn't sound like much time to get through all the stuff they need to get through...

45 minute battle?

Well this may turn out as bloated as ROTK was, not that I'm surprised.

If Jackson keeps to it, he has my gratitude. 140-150 minutes will be a massive relief.

I'm sure he will do all he can to pad it out as much as possible, but probably 150 min. is the max amount that he can stretch it

There isn't much left to get through. Battle of Laketown and the gathering of the armies and then the Battle and Bilbo returning the Hobbiton. That's about all thats left.

On another note, WB UK has posted another new extended scene from DOS:

There's also the attack on Dol Goldur

Oh yeah forgot about that. Still tho, I think that the events can fit into 150 minutes. My guess is Jackson wants a fast paced lean theatrical cut, and will release a more substantial Extended Cut.

I am thinking the 45 min battle will include Dol Goldur. Or at least I hope so.

I don't see how that 45 minutes can include Dol Guldror cause Gandalf is present at both battles. And based on the trailer he arrives at Dale before the Orc army does so the Dol Guldor battle must take place before the climax.

If this film does end up with a 140-150 minute runtime the pace is going to be relentless. This film could end up being the tightest thing Jackson's ever put out. Honestly, I'm kind of intrigued by the runtime alone.

How relentless does it need to be? There isn't much left to cover. They could do the movie in 100mins easily.

Eh I wouldn't want it to be that relentless. 130 minutes plus 10 minutes of credits is perfect imo, and for Jackson it's downright short. Means it will move from beat to beat at a nice clip, but still provide some time for character moments.

Thanks for posting. I don't think it is an improvement, however. The lengthy conversation, held while others around you are busy fighting for their lives, is a movie trope that always looks terrible, and particularly so here.

What about the whole Arkenstone subplot and the incident at the gate?

Hard for one not to think "Why doesn't someone just stab both of them right there and then?". I'll agree it's a bit jarring but to be fair often times books do this too and they seem to get a pass and it's equally as ridiculous. Seeing this specific trope play out on film just makes it more obvious I think.

I like good action as much as anyone, but 45 minutes worth of swing and stab may prove to be overkill - pardon the pun. We shall see.

Depends on what's taking place DURING the battle. Doesn't mean there's JUST Hack n Slash.
