Official 'The Hobbit' Thread - - Part 18

Oh my God..that's awful news. It's so weird, seeing him for the past decade in the behind the scenes stuff. This is terrible news!

That's the scariest thing about getting older like that, because something like a heart attack can strike out of nowhere.

And Andrew looked healthy, and dare I say, looked younger than his actual age. RIP.

Terrible news. I didn't think PJ let Lesnie off to his full potential in the Hobbit series compared to the LOTR trilogy, save for An Unexpected Journey.

But man, Lesnie outdid himself on the LOTR trilogy. Such a beautifully-shot film series.

Andrew Lesnie, the Oscar-winning cinematographer who spent more than a decade collaborating with director Peter Jackson on the six Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, has died. He was 59.

Very unfortunate. :(

Very sad. I remember him from the extensive documentaries on the LOTR extended editions. His brilliant cinematography will live on forever. In my opinion, the lighting of the beacons in "Return of the King" was his crowning achievement in the trilogy.

No doubt. On the big screen that scene was orgasmic to behold.

how were they able to film the scene of Gandalf and Thorin meeting in Bree? Isn't that only in Unfinished Tales?

It is mentioned in the Return of the King appendices so they used from there.

So, now that The Hobbit trilogy is finished, do you guys think we'll see any more Middle-earth films any time soon? I feel like Warner Bros. will try to milk it a little more in another 5-10 years with a movie (or movies) about Aragorn in his younger days.

Dear God, I hope not.

Aragorn would be the worst character to use, because he is one of the most fully rendered in the books and therefore the easiest to ruin (they already screwed him up in LOTR).

Any further PJ or PJ style Middle Earth movies would be a bad idea, but if they did have to happen then they should at least avoid using any of the principle characters from The War of the Ring.

Let's leave the Tolken-verse alone for a while. OR SHOULD I SAY FOREVER?

It is the fountain from which (almost) all genre fantasy fiction flows, however, so it will inevitably be plundered again and again.

I'd say let create new high fantasy movies. That's why I'm looking forward to Warcraft, though it could either way (great or awful). But with Bowie Jr it might be the former.

I think the Tolkien estate has made it pretty clear that they won't allow any more movies to be made that are based on his works.

The film rights to LOTR and The Hobbit were sold long ago, however.

This has been discussed at great length in this thread.

There is only the Silmarilion left anyway, and that if they ever do it should be a series. Hell, i hope one they they reboot the whole thing and give us a series of the whole thing. It wont happen for a decade at least, but i would be totally up for it, im not very fond of most of the movies anyway so another take on them would be refreshing

If it's a TV show sure....but if they're gonna reboot, they should wait..20-30 years.

30 years? oh man that long? i will be like 50 when that is done LOL. I think 10 minimum (tv special effect will be almost at par with movies at that point), 20 or 30 for me personally would be a lot, i hope they don't take that long

Some months ago, we discussed how different a new adaptation of LOTR could be from PJ's. Ultimately, I think the answer amounted to "quite different", but that doesn't really tell us how much appetite potential audiences would have for it.

If its done well and respects the source material and can flesh out the characters more, then i think the audience will come. PJ vision is still fresh in the mind of us, but its a book and many of us probably imagined things quite different than what was presented on screen. So i dont think anyone has an authority on how this things should look exactly (except Tolkien himself).

The Balrog was probably the one thing i said to myself , yeah this is exactly how i imagined it, but many other stuff like Gollum i had totally different things in mind, so im always open for a new visual interpretation of the story if done right

We live in an era where Spider-Man got three reboots in the span of 13 years. I'm ready for stuff now. New IPs. Lord of the Rings/Middle Earth can wait.

Yeah we need a break, if WOW is any good then it will satisfy my high fantasy thirst for a while. Praying that movie is any good and can give us some fresh concepts to the genera. As nice as it would be a proper LOTR series, i also want fresh stuff.

if they add Miles Morales then we could have potentially 4 spidermans. Thats a dream of Marvel, for him to take Parkers place and force diversity to the audience with an uninteresting character. I would have less issues if they turned Peter african american, asian, latino whatever, than make a copy cat version of him and force it to the audience.

Anyway yeah i agree we have to let LOTR rest for a while

Yeah..Maybe 30 years is a long time but I don't ...its time for a break.
