Official 'The Hobbit' Thread - - Part 18

Not by the time they were released, but that's partly because a slow deterioration in those expectations occurred during development.

I'd say the prequels - which are now getting some new fans, thanks to younger people watching the movies for the first time because they saw the TFA trailer and decided to check the movies out. There's a lot of SW prequel love on tumblr these days.

PJ had the chance to do something really special, but he took a nice small story about a character discovering his bravery and having a grand adventure, and turned it into a bloated CGI mess in which Bilbo was pushed to the sidelines in favor of a bunch of stuff that had nothing to do with the original story.

As poorly written, directed, and acted as the SW prequels were, they never lost sight of their main narrative, and had some good points, including Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan. Martin Freeman had a few good moments as Bilbo but he was overhsadowed for the most part by all the screaming Orcs and plot tangents.

Peter Jackson's directive for BotFA: NEEDS MORE ALFRID.

And Beorn torture, and lengthy gore-heavy fighting.

TheDigitalBits has confirmed with inside sources that the Extended Cut adds 36 minutes.

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/080615_1345
The Extended Edition clocks in at 164 mins, or 20 mins longer. Not 36 mins. The article in the link reflects these changes.

I wonder what's taking so long for an official announcement to be made. Maybe they're trying to appeal the rating?

Yeah, there's a decent three-hour movie in there waiting to get out...

But also expectations for The Hobbit films were nowhere near that for the prequels.

The last two hobbit movies were absolutely forgettable.

-tacking on smaugs defeat in battle of the fives armies when it could have finished the last movie

-thorins "tony stark anxiety attack" moment quickly being dealt with

-tauriel and her useless side plot "oh why does it hurt so much?"

-overly long cgi battle to cap off the whole franchise with azog

True, but people at least expected PJ to churn out some decent films that would be at least as good as RotK.

Instead we got three boring, ugly movies that were all over the map and seemed to be about everything *but* Bilbo.

Considering the resources and talent at PJ's disposal, it amazes me that it turns out the ninety-minute Rankin/ Bass cartoon made in 1977 turned out to be a much better, more faithful version than PJ's modern, multimillion dollar nine-hour version.

I love that trilogy boxset! It matches the style of the LOTR EE Trilogy boxset.

I wonder if the hobbit boxset opens the same way?

Sweet glad I waited for the extended. Did the same with all the others. :word:

When I saw the headline "R-rated cut of the Hobbit" I thought it was an Onion headline haha.

In all honesty I think an R-Rated cut of maybe the Two Towers or RotK might have worked, but it just seems comical that Jackson somehow twisted an adaptation of a children's book into something R rated.

It is pretty jarring at first, but I'm sure it can't be that bad. It's not like Bilbo and Thorin are suddenly going to start dropping f-bombs. The MPAA can be weird sometimes and Jackson probably didn't budge because it wasn't the theatrical version. Besides, Return of the King had some stuff that wouldn't seem out of place in an R-rated film, like the orcs catapulting the severed heads of the soldiers of Gondor over the walls of Minas Tirith.

Good news: Amazon confirmed that the Hobbit box set is designed the same as the Lord of the Rings blu-ray box set.

Bad news: Edit: Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits has heard from WB that the 3D BOTFA release and the 3D trilogy boxset will be an Amazon exclusive in the U.S. So if you want the extended edition in 3D you will have to purchase it from Amazon. http://www.thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/082515_1300

Bad news for WB: I'm not getting it.

I'd just like to hear PJ's rationale for why the film absolutely HAD to be gory and violent enough for an R rating.

But LOTR is a story entirely different from The Hobbit, tonally and artistically. Abundant gore or gratuitous cruelty are just as disruptive to it as explicit sex would be.

The Hobbit movies are perhaps the neatest example I have yet encountered of the flattening, warping and homogenising pressures of consumer markets on art. It makes satire redundant.

I just wish PJ and co had picked a different sacred cow to milk and butcher.
