Official 'The Hobbit' Thread - - Part 18

I'd just like to hear PJ's rationale for why the film absolutely HAD to be gory and violent enough for an R rating.

How much do you know about the MPAA and the way they determine what does and doesn't get an R? It's not based only on violence and gore. Remember The King's Speech? Yeah, they gave that film an R. Not a drop of blood or violence in the movie.

Their decisions are not even based on precedence. They have been known to give one film a PG-13 and give another less violent film an R for stuff another PG-13 film did.

They have been known to change their mind on a whim and without any real reason. The extended version of the Aragorn/Lurtz fight initially got an R which is why it was cut down for the theatrical release. When the film's extended cut came out Jackson resubmitted it and they let it pass with a PG-13. In some countries it wasn't so lucky. The MPAA is incredibly picky and depending on their mood one day to the next can be lenient or prudishly strict. And the appeals process is a nightmare according to those who have gone through it.

I seriously doubt that that this film has anything more gory than the severed heads being catapulted into Gondor in ROTK or Lurtz licking the blood off of Aragorn's dagger in FOTR or all the severed heads and limbs in the five previous films. It's far more likely based on the MPAA's history that the actual thing that got them to give this an R was something no more violent than any other moment in the other five films. And since this is a version intended first and foremost for home video there was no reason to go through a frustrating protracted appeals process. Especially not when it might force WB to delay the release of this version.

Yes, the source material was a children's book. The movies and the universe Jackson created have never been geared towards pre-teens, and the movies have always pushed the PG-13 rating in the U.S.. If Jackson ever had to resubmit the LOTR films I wouldn't be surprised if one or all of them got an R. With the MPAA it's really not hard to get an R from them.

To those following this type of information, has there been any word on a collector's/limited edition set for BOTFA EE? I'm not talking the set that has the entire trilogy, I'm talking just that movie but that comes with a collectible statue/bookends/whatever (i.e. http://amzn.com/B00E9HML1Q). I've gotten that for every Middle-Earth movie so far and would be bummed if BOTFA didn't have one.

I don't have any kids to give a copy to so I wait:oldrazz:

I've bought both theatrical and extended when they come out and keep both. The theatrical discs so far have had some extras not included in the extended editions.

Ditto to this

But I was hoping it was going to be Gold Foil like the LotR set :(. Not that it's not cool it opens the same way like we were wishing for.
Good news: Amazon confirmed that the Hobbit box set is designed the same as the Lord of the Rings blu-ray box set.

Bad news: Edit: Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits has heard from WB that the 3D BOTFA release and the 3D trilogy boxset will be an Amazon exclusive in the U.S. So if you want the extended edition in 3D you will have to purchase it from Amazon. http://www.thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/082515_1300

I still have the DVD set of the Extended LotR then Kids just don't get into the Extra's like I do. That's one reason I gave them my Theatrical versions

It's funny, I'm more excited to watch the special features than I am to watch the extended edition. The features for these films are my favorite of any movie. I've actually watched the making of LOTR more times than the actual films, haha.

Seeing how the trilogy packaging matches up with the LOTR EE Blu-ray set, I kinda wish I held off on picking up the AUJ and DOS extended editions.

I keeping both (all 3) the single Extended Hobbit films. The Lotr extended tho of mine are dvd. At the time, I couldn't afford the bluray player so I never got them in Bluray. I don't mind tho, I love the look of the LotR extended singles like Books. It's the same as the Hobbit single EE's, they look more like a book.

The King's Speech got the R for the repeated use of the f-word in one memorable scene.

Since we know there won't be any f-words in Hobbit, or graphic sex, the R has pretty much got to be for violence. Maybe it's for the added
Beorn torture scene?

An interesting article on the influence of Finnish myth and language on Tolkien.

Does anyone know if he was familiar with Sibelius? It seems likely, and I have often thought how transportable Sibelius' music would be to Middle Earth.

Watched the two extended and bofa. Can't wait to see the extended Bofa

So many separate packs, i just wish the studio released some kind of super pack with all the Middle Earth film versions, from the theatrical to the extended 3D, or if they on the very least did that with each respective trilogy, Lord of the Rings expecialy could easily get a pack that included the theatrical and extended cuts.

With the Hobbit it would be trickier, as there would be 4 versions of each film (theatrical, theatrical 3D, extended, extended 3D), but it could probably be done.

It would be pretty much cost prohibitive. A 27 disc blu-ray set. I doubt stores would want to pay to stock something like that. It would be hard to sell it and make back a profit. So at most you'd be lucky to find one or two copies in any given store, and it'd likely set you back around $200 at least.

warner bros. released an amazing 31 disc set (wizard's collection) for harry potter. i could see them doing the same with lotr/hobbit.

Sure it would be very expensive and big, but we're talking about Lord of the Rings and Hobbit, these aren't exactly second rate franchises, they're among the highest grossing and have one of the most loyal fandoms. As stated before, Warner Bros actualy did something similar with Harry Potter, and that set had more than 30 disks.

Also, if they didn't want to do that with all of the Middle earth films, they could still do it with each separate trilogy, i actualy would prefer it that way, as i could simply pick the Lord of the Rings films and wait a while to think if the Hobbit set would be worth it.

If you take out the DVD dics, a lord of the rings set would have around 9 disks, maybe 1 or 2 more discs could be added to add in any bonus material from the DVDs that wasn't found in the bu ray edition.

Aparently there was even a DVD set with both theatrical and extended cuts

Same here Vartha, I never got around to seeing Five Armies actually. I decided when I didn't get around to it that I'd wait for the extended.

I know a couple people who were waiting too. Man I wish there were a way to speed up time!!! lol

Here is a list new material that may be included in the EE. This list is based on information taken from the BOTFA Chronicles books that were released:

1. Prologue (Gandalf’s vision): the beginning of the BOTFA will open with a traditional middle earth prologue of Gandalf having a vision of Smaug leading the orc armies to Ererbor. This is described and visualized in the Weta Chronicles book. This scene will probably be 1.5-2 minutes max.

2. Rooftop Action: Additional footage of Bard running from Smaug on the roof top. This will most likely briefly feature Smaug destroying the wind lance. This scene will probably be very brief 30-60 seconds.

3. Laketown Refugees: Legolas and Tauriel will briefly dialog regarding the plight of the Laketown refugees. 30-60 seconds max.

4. Dol-Guldur: Based on the Weta Chronicles book, I think a re-edit of this scene is quite possible with very brief extended sequences. We will most likely see specific mentions of the three rings, and Saruman come across the plantir. Most notably we will probably see Radaghast’s involvement increased dramatically. The chronicles book specifically mentions Gandalf and Radaghast coming across Beorn being dragged into Dol Guldur as a warg chase ensues. Beorn will most likely be briefly tortured as a the wizards work out a rescue plan. After being rescued, Beorn will agree to assist Radaghast in gathering the “birds and the beast”. Radaghast will give Gandalf his staff and the scene will end. Expect an additional 3-5 minutes.

5. Erebor Counting Rooms: Gloin and others will be going through the treasure in Erebor according the Chronicles book. Expect 45-60 seconds max.

6. Arkenstone: Bofur dialog before Bilbo sneaks away with the Arkenstone. Expect 1.5-2 minutes.

7. The Entry of Dain Ironfoot and stand off: Expect major changes according to the EE trailer. Dain will arrive with an entire cavalry of war rams and the elves/dwarves will actually fight. The elves will fire arrows and the dwarves will block with ballistas. Like the book, Gandalf will intervene with his “how shall this day end” line from the trailers. There will probably be around 2 minutes of extended footage, but expect major re-edited material.

8. Chariot Chase: The BOTFA chronicles book specifically states “Their path would take them down the ice river on a careening war chariot, encountering Wars and Trolls, and then up the slope mounted on rams cut free form the chariot (239)”. According to the film makers this is a impressive scene featuring a practical chariot made by Weta. Expect wargs, a troll and of course a lot of action before the rams are cut free and rode to Ravenhill. The is scene will probably be around 3-4 minutes long.

9. Character hero moments: Expect the lesser seen dwarfs to have a few hero moments as mentioned in the Chronciles book. Based on the trailer we know we’ll have more Legolas moments and most likely Thranduil (Chronicles book). Also expect further dialog from Bilo, Thorin, etc. as noted in the trailers. Expect 2-3 minutes of new footage.

10. Alfrid: Expect a quick death scene somewhere after his dress moment. Most likely gruesome and quick.

11. Beorn and the Gundabad Army: We know for a fact we will see more Beorn in bear form which most likely accounts for the R rating. Expect 1-3 minutes of bear carnage and possibly more eagles. According to the Chronicles Beorn will also carry Thorin’s body away from the battle or even to Erebor.

12. The Durin Funeral: This is all but guaranteed for the EE. In the BOTFA chronicles book, Beorn, Gandalf and Ragaghast are pictured as present for the funeral. We may also see Tauriel watching from a distance. Expect a 2 minute scene.

13. Dain’s Coronation/Arkenstone: We know this was filmed according to the Chronicles book. Expect to see story resolution on the Arkenstone, Bard, and most likely Thranduil’s gems. Expect a montage that last 2-3 minutes.

14. Troll chest: Bilbo will return to the troll cave and retrieve the treasure chest. Although unlikey we may see a larger travel montage including a brief visit with Beorn and a return to Rivendell. Expect 1-3 minutes.

Speculation: Rumors are circulating that we may see a re-edit of Fili’s death. According to the Chronicles book he actually has a much more gruesome death and an earlier version of the script even has him and Kili dying together. Even though this is unlikely it’s worth mentioning and again, may also be a reason for the R rating.

Well, now we know what that Beorn torture scene is likely all about.

There is a whole load of content that was in the Chronicles books for the previous two films that never made it in. That list is pure speculation (and unrealistic, in my opinion). I don't, for one second, think we will get that prologue, for example.

hahaha I was channel surfing the other day and saw this
