I walked into my store yesterday and they had about 30 copies on the shelf alone, not counting all those with boxes/standing orders - I think every store will've thought ahead a little.

I gotta say, all the griping about being grounded in realism for the last two volumes then all of a sudden there's serpents and giant wolves... I dont see the problem. Surely this is the 'ultimate' case (pun intended) of "we live in a world with guys who stick to walls and other guys who change into massive grey hulking monsters, and alien shapeshifters who were involved in helping the Nazi's in WW2 - but you're having trouble believing there's other dimensional beings with the power of gods and that the myths might actually be real?"

Definitely dug the conclusion to this. That big fold out splash page was pretty awesome but it was a pain in the ass to completely fold that thing out and balance it on my leg all at the same time. Thankfully there wasn't any dialogue in it, haha.

It was a solid conclusion but, honestly, for all that wait it wasn't really anything to write home about. Though the best part of it all was at the end with Hawkeye and Black Widow. That was truly bad ass!

But I can't wait unti Loeb starts his run with Ultimates 3. I'll definitely miss Hitch for the fantastic pencils but I'd much rather see this book come out on a timely manner than have to practically wait a year between issues. Sorry but sometimes waiting this long for quality can be a pain in the padded ass.

[The Question]

I really liked all the mystical norse stuff. It may be a bit of a betrayal of the realism that the Ultimates are based on, but I like it. Really, it works for me because I look at it from a standpoint of Hindu Mythology. Let me explain. You see, in some Hindu traditions, it is believed that civilization goes through a cycle of four stages, or Yugas. The cycle starts from Satya Yuga, in which we are closest to God, and the veil between the material and trancendent realms is almost transparent, and descends unto Kali Yuga, the stage in which we are furthest from God, the predominant emphasis of living is mere, material survival, most people are aware of only the physical aspect of existence, and in which people's relationship with the spiritual is governed predominantly by superstition and authority. Many Hindu scholars believe that society is currently in Kali Yuga. Way I see it, the climax of The Ultimates (and in a way the entirety of The Ultimates) was kind of like the end of Kali Yuga and the beginning of Satya Yuga.

Awesome end to an awesome arc. Very explosive and finally Thor gets his due. Badass stuff all around and that is officially the best splash page ever drawn. I love that they're freelance now. They're basically like the 616 Avengers. I wonder if they'll ever call themselves that or will they keep the government title of Ultimates. I'd love to finally see "Ultimate Avengers" as the title on there. Can't wait to maybe see some roster changes. The change in looks in the next volume will definatelty be warranted considering they're not government agents anymore so they probably won't have a uniform look like they used to.

Oh and I definately can't wait to see more of Ultimate Asgard. Their armor and look in general is quite different it seems. Very modern and emphasizes the fact that they're really aliens.

 

[The Question]

Unless, of course, they're not aliens at all. The Ultimate way that gods work may be different from the 616 way. They could go the DC rout, and say that Gods are living ideas. Or they could blend the Gods and The Eternals, saying that they're vastly enhanced humans charged with the task of protecting the rest of us. Hell, they could even be the first mutants, with most modern day mutants being their vastly weaker descendants.

What is with all these questions being asked, when the answers are literally in the last couple of pages of the thread? Have we become that lazy, and uninformed?

I just got issue number 13 and I think it is INCREDIBLE. Truley wonderful art and story.
But because of the monumentally huge delays, the story seems disjointed.
Plus the delay came at the worst time in the story too.
The Ultimates fought the evil Ultimates and then defeated them,
then there is a giant break,
and then the Ultimate fight Loki and his minions.
the stories are so different and the break was so huge that it almost like two seperate story lines.

I think I would have to re-read the whole thing to fully get the effect and the momentum that was intended.
But it is almost worth it because of the wonderful art.
