The Dark Knight Rises Other great trilogies and where TDKR fits for you

It seems there's at least two camps when it comes to classifying Star Wars; the OT/PT and the Saga camps. I feel there's enough differences to split them, though I don't harbor irrational hatred toward one or the other. I also hope to see Iron-Man, Thor, Webb's Spider-Man and Hellboy on the list.

Iron-Man 2 has already blown it for me and I don't feel Amazing Spider-Man was strong enough though it does have potential. And I don't remember having fond memories of Hellboy 2 but I really need to watch it again.

I think Star Wars works both ways, it's one saga but it can be thought of as two separate trilogies mainly because they have different protagonists.

Two great films, one dodgy one. High end of the middle group.

IM kinda screwed that up already.

I see Star Wars IV-VI as the Anakin Skywalker Trilogy.

So, I place these trilogies over the TDK Trilogy.

Pirates of the Caribbean (not counting On Stranger Tides)
Jason (Bourne)
Toy Story
Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars)
The Matrix

The TDK Trilogy would have been a lot better if they all had the same tone of Batman Begins.

Surely a Trilogy is only a True trilogy when there is one story arc or major connection which joins the 3 movies together (which isnt just the central character?)

For Example the Indy films (and i Love the Indy movies, sans Crystal skull)are all seperate, stand alone stories... that was the intention when they were made, in the vain of older matinee adventure movies. The only connecting factor is the character.

Much the same as the Potc movies are not ALL part of the same story arc. The first 3 possibly are (at a stretch) but with the fourth the only connection was Jack Sparrow (and the franchise did not start out as "TheJack Sparrow Story")

The Dark Knight Trilogy works because it is the continuation of a bigger story arc.

Starwars.... is a tricky one. Im older and therefore count the original Trilogy as the greatest and the prequel trilogy seperatley... but i guess.. it is ALL one big story and so.. ..i dont know... I guess the prequels are anakins story and the original Lukes so there are 2 different trilogies there.

The Matrix... just got too messy for me.

Toy story is right up there (im assume everyone classes it as the ANdy Trilogy :wow: )

Back to the Future, hmmmmm first two 10/10... the third... erm... not 10/10

I cant wait for a Dark Knight Marathon at home, with My buddies and Beers (Will send the wife out shopping for that one) I think that is when i will truely know where this story fits in my collection.

The only truly "Flawless" trilogy is Toy Story.

In the close but no cigar section are Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Back to the Future, and yes, The Dark Knight trilogy. If I had to rank them in terms of closest to being flawless, it'd go like this

1. Lord of the Rings
2. Star Wars
3. The Dark Knight
4. BTTF

So yes, Nolan's trilogy is certainly amongst the greats, but so far nothing has managed to match what Toy Story did. Three nearly flawless films that not only make a great larger story but also stand up individually just as well.

Toy Story 2 wasn't that great IMO. Feels a bit straight to video-ish to me. (I know the story behind it and yes it's AMAZING that they were able to make it as good as it was).

Toy Story 3 was leaps and bounds better IMO. Every trilogy has a film that some people consider a weak link.

I really am surprised at how much TDKR has disappointed some posters here. As a massive massive fan of BB and TDK I walked out of TDKR loving every single minute it had to offer. It wasn't until I looked on here that I noticed whatever flaws it had to offer (which weren't even that many IMO).

Agreed. When I talk to people about it outside this forum TDKR is at least second best for them, so it's still not something like a godfather part 3 where pretty much EVERYONE says that's the weakest. Heck it's not eve Return of the Jedi (and I personally love that one, ewoks and all)

Honestly I think Toy Story and TDK trilogy both stand at the top. Your last paragraph perfectly describes how I feel about both series.

I would put the LOTR, Star Wars (OT), Bourne, Toy Story and Back to the Future trilogies ahead of the Nolan Batman trilogy. Iron Man can't be a great trilogy (thanks to IM2) but it does have the potential to have its third film being the best in a superhero trilogy for the first time.

That needs a Imo :cwink:

Sorry. I didn't think I had to type out the blatantly obvious.

1. Toy Story
2. The Dark Knight
3. The Lord of The Rings

Toy Story
Lord of the Rings
Star Wars IV-VI
Star Wars I-III
The Godfather
Back To the Future
The Dark Knight Trilogy (TDKR could've been longer)

You'd think on a batman movie forum that a batman trilogy would be number 1 on bat fans list.

I think if LORD OF THE RINGS didn't exist, that would be a lot more common.

I drop by at the Spidey boards and the majority won't call Raimi's trilogy amazing solely because of Spider-Man 3.

Some people just didn't like TDKR, so it's whatever floats their boat.

4. Evil Dead
5. Back to the Future
