Pacific Rim 2 - Part 1

Embrace the anime.

I guess I just have low expectations for my kaiju films. It looks fun. That is all I require.
The first film is an all time high for me in a theater. When I see something that is going to be so clearly inferior, I can't get excited.

This film looks cheap, which it shouldn't because even if it had its budget cut, it will still be several times more than any Japanese film could muster for a budget.

Guillermo still has input, and Mako's returning last I heard. (And I don't know that people even consider her a high point of the movie, the main complaint I see about the first film are that the two leads are a bit flat.)

I do agree that Ramin Djawadi not returning is a bit worrisome, but we still have yet to hear the new score. Judging by the first trailer it sounds like the filmmakers haven't forgotten the first film's iconic score, so I'm guessing they understand that this film needs a good score too. I'm also guessing we'll hear callbacks to it.

They started the script from scratch and its a completely different set of designers than those who were working on the GDT iteration of the sequel.

I wouldn't mind a more sleek look to the robots to be honest. More neon genesis, less happy meal toy

Anyone else heard that a new trailer is due tomorrow? Sure it was on the PR Facebook page earlier.

I am seeing various outlets saying that.

They definitely seem like they're gearing this one more towards the kids.

The first one was a kid's movie.

I think people are forgetting what the first film was. The main characters were archetypal and somewhat flat. The storyline was very simple and the setup was a bit contrived (not to mention several details don't quite line up right.) Some of this was certainly deliberate, but the point is that the first film wasn't high art or some thought provoking masterpiece, it's a dumb summer blockbuster (and this isn't me hating on the movie...it was intended to be.) I think people are sort of misremembering the movie as more than it actually was.

I would say, a bit more towards the Chinese audience.
Which is pretty funny, since the first movie made more money in China than in America and this movie is so different from the first one.

Or you know, there were aspects of the film in terms of aesthetics, world building, theme and yes, character that were the reason why we enjoyed the film, made it stand out and that its sequel seems to jettison.

In general though, as "dumb" as the first film might have been, it was made earnestly with craft and care. In every way that the first film was lush and detailed, this new movie looks cheap and lame.

With no exaggeration it is closer in looks to Atlantic Rim.

I agree that the first film was made with a lot of craft and care, but we've only seen a couple minutes worth of footage from this film. The final film could also be made with a lot of craft and care. I recall a lot of people thinking the first film was going to be "another Transformers" based on the trailers. They were proven wrong after the final movie came out.

I also agree that Del Toro's vision and aesthetic are different, but that's to be expected considering this is a different director (this is true of every franchise that switches directors between movies.) If people prefer Del Toro's style that's fine, but I don't get the "cheap knockoff" complaint because I think many of the shots in the trailers for this movie look quite visually pleasing (just in a different way from the first film).

Lol, I love the roly poly robot!

It looks fun, but i would be an absolute liar if I didn't say I already miss Guillermo's style. Pacific Rim like all Del Toro films was absolutely gorgeous.

Could only watch the trailer with no sound for now, I liked it. GDT's absence is felt, but liked the look of a lot here.

I thought it was particularly dark showing people on the ground as it's collapsing around them due to the weight of the Kaiju.

I haven't seen the new trailer, but the new spots worry me. This looks less The Dark Knight, and more Ghostbusters II to me. Pacific Rim is a movie I liked, but I do feel the movie over-explained the science and it got bogged down into not enough monster fighting at times. This movie just seems to be re-telling the man must come out of retirement to bring the program back against the re-emerging threat thing the first did. I am not impressed.

The hybrids aren't exactly what I was expecting, as I was expecting them to come from the other side of the rift, not apparently be made by humans. I am curious about the story there.

Well, the new trailer really, really hints that the kaiju return because of something the humans did.

I will get to watch it tonight, but I don't think it is going to change my opinion much.
