Pacific Rim 2 - Part 1

I thought it was a blast.

If you thought it was shallow, I totally get it. But for real tho, aside from one or two issues, I'm struggled to find a criticism that couldn't also be applied to the first film in some way.

Wow, only 28 mill in the U.S., 150 ww.
I think it will be lucky to make 80 here, prolly 400 WW, if that much.
Like the last one, overseas will be much better for this one it seems.

Why Transformers movies do better in US ?

Though their B.O. receipts are on decline, but still, they are doing better than Pacific Rim in US. I predict that Bumblebee will easily earn more than Pacific Rim 2's entire B.O run in two weeks in US.

Why exactly do these movies not do well at the box office? They're fun, different, and have a decent storyline that makes sense. They're not the greatest movies ever, but they're not overly dumb, insulting, or nonsensical like Transformers or something.

It's a bit frustrating to me that the Pacific Rim movies aren't successful, because it feels like the only series/franchise right now that isn't a remake or adaptation of something. (Yes it takes inspiration from a lot of stuff, but it's new characters and stories and whatnot). The fact that these keep underpreforming isn't going to make other studios want to put out original ideas, meaning we'll just get more rehashing.

This movie looked really good. The CGI was nice and it had pretty good cinematography in most of its scenes. But man, the dialogue and acting were just SO bad. This movie didn't deserve John Boyega, he's too good for it.

And for that matter, it didn't deserve Charlie Day and I really hated what they did with his character.

I think these movies underperform because they're just not very good. They're... fine. I would HOPE that the lesson Hollywood learns is that people want movies that are better than "fine."

People say they want originality but they rarely mean it.

Man, this movie sucks. There were some interesting ideas and even a good twist there in the middle, but instead of going further it just settles on them, making the expanding of any ideas come up short. It all was executed very surface level. This movie was poorly directed too. Goddamn. It's the most basic stuff. No tension, no thrills, no inspired moments. I don't mind the idea of it having an anime, cartoon sensibility, but this is no different than any generic blockbuster. By the third act I was wondering what I wanted to eat for dinner.

Boyega was good, so was the girl, and I liked the idea of the next generation of pilots, but it just doesn't amount to much. The thing is, I have no interesting in talking about this movie even to critique it. It's not worth it. It just bores me talking about it.

It makes me appreciate the first film more. It has it's problems but I always really liked it and it's a damn solid movie. The caring and vision comes through, I like all the characters, the world and it maintains its interesting mythology with all of that. Even if Raleigh wasn't the most interesting character, I at least gave a **** about what was happening with him. Here I couldn't.

I just don't give a **** and I'm probably gonna forget about this in a week. The first movie was fun, this just made me feel empty.

I just finished watching this and I have to agree. The way the characters from the 1st film are treated actually made me sick. Hell even the Kaiju themselves feel underused and underappreciated here. The darn thing felt more like Transformers 6 for most of it. By the time the stuff that i wanted to see started happening i had already checked out. None of the charm and flair that i liked about the first one. Only Boyega makes an impression on me. I really like that dude.

I basically know nothing of the plot of this, but saw the clips they're running on the talkshows with Boyega: what's the deal with the Jaeger fighting another Jaeger? Better be some "rogue pilot team" thing and not some "the Kaijus have gone sentient and managed to hijack/assimilate a Jaeger" type of ****.

It has to do with the plot twist in the film, which revolves around a certain character. Which during the film is surprising. But when you walk out and even a few days pass, you're gonna think "this is one of the most ridiculous plot twists I've ever seen" :woot:

This attitude of:
We have to get rid of/cast off/undercut the old just to try and build up the new.
that some in Hollywood seem to have is getting really annoying.

Ironically, this has happened TWICE in two separate movies that Boyega has been in (although it's not even remotely his fault personally) in the span of like six months.

I'm still angry about Mako in this film. It was a grave error.

At least:
Stacker got to die a epic hero's death in the first film that helped to save the day in the end.

Mako, got no such respect. Also Stacker got to take part in most of the film and the final fight. Mako, nope she's gone as soon as possible, ugh.

Killing characters from the first film isn't necessarily undercutting them to build up the new cast. I never felt like that was being done here. The two most likable characters from the first film (in my opinion),[BLACKOUT] Newt and Gottlieb, both survived[/BLACKOUT] and were important to the plot, so it's not like they got rid of everyone.

Killing Luke Skywalker wasn't the problem with The Last Jedi, it was poorly handling him while he was alive. I really didn't want or need to see [BLACKOUT]Mako[/BLACKOUT] die in an epic Jaeger battle, she's not even a pilot anymore. It would have been pretty contrived to work that in.

The twist with Newt? I really don't get why people think that was dumb. He's being mind controlled by the aliens, it's not like he randomly switched motivations on his own. It made perfect since in context, and was a really interesting idea. I'm really glad they had the guts to go with it, it's the first time I've been legitimately surprised by a movie since Spider-Man Homecoming.

I saw it today. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be and I found it entertaining enough, but it was a far cry from the first one. I will say though, John Boyega was a far, far, far, faaaaaar better lead than Charlie Hunnam was in the first film.

Stacker Pentecost wasn't a pilot anymore either.

Because such twist doesn't suit such goofy, over-the-top character. It may have been in interesting idea, doesn't mean it's executed well.

I think the fact that it was such a goofy and over-the-top character made it even more surprising when it happened. That single twist surprised and impacted me far more than any of the "subversive" things in The Last Jedi.

I liked how [BLACKOUT]Charlie Day's[/BLACKOUT] entire demeanor changed when it was revealed that he [BLACKOUT]was mind controlled[/BLACKOUT]. He still had a goofy side to his character, but he also had a sinister nature. That was some good acting and good direction. Fair enough if some people don't like it, but I really can't imagine a better execution myself.

Edit: And for all the people who are worried about his character, I'm sure they'll get him back to normal in the next one.

Dare I say that I thought this was a lot of fun? I went in purely for completist reasons, since I already had a review of the first one and was totally expecting it to be really meh, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Also it really drove home how much Star Wars and especially The Last Jedi wastes John Boyega.

It pisses me off
what they did with Mako though, and they didn't even give her a bad-ass death in battle.

Yeah, what happened with [BLACKOUT]Mako was disappointing, but at least they acknowledged her death. One of the kids freaking died in the final battle and nobody gave two ****s.[/BLACKOUT]

It would’ve been a much better movie minus the girl/cadets.

Amara is the only character besides Jake who makes any impression.

I liked the Russian girl.

Frankly, Bracer Phoenix was probably my favorite new Jaeger.

So, two controversial opinions I have. Both spoilers:

1. [BLACKOUT]I like the Charlie Day twist. When "Alice" was revealed, I laughed maniacally. If anything, I wish it had gone crazier with it. But I was down for this move.[/BLACKOUT]

2.[BLACKOUT] I do not give a **** about Mako. Don't care that she was killed off. I think the performance itself is incredibly stiff. All her line readings come off as someone acting phonetically more than anything. [/BLACKOUT]

And can I just say, John Boyega is the real deal? I knew potential when I saw it in ATTACK THE BLOCK and he has more than lived up to it. This guy has charisma for days. I wish I could combine the best parts of this movie with the best parts of the first one: that is a movie I want to see.

First Roxy in Kingsman 2 now Mako in Pacific Rim 2. I'm detecting a pattern.

I liked the movie but it can't touch the original. The daytime fights were a nice addition.
