Pacific Rim 2

IMO I'd swap around RIPD and PR.

Yup.

If I had to wager a ranking for next weekend I'd say it will be something like:

#1 Turbo
#2 Despicable Me
#3 The Conjuring
#4 RIPD
#5 Pacific Rim

I see The Conjuring and Red being number 1 and 2, you decide which is 1 and which is 2. Turbo is a Wednesday release and I don't see it doing good enough to beat the other films during the weekend.

DM may drop a little bit more this weekend with kids going to see Turbo instead as well, so PR could come 4th spot or with luck and good WOM possibly 3rd place, it'll be interesting to see.

Just a wild guess but something tells me PR has enjoyed it's one weekend that it will ever be in the top 5. I see it coming in 6th next weekend with maybe 15M.

I'm hoping PR destroys the Japanese market, not because I need a sequel but because the movie deserves money.
What kind of a world do we live in where Grown Up 2 has a bigger opening that PR? Oof!

The story seemed so self contained and properly resolved I don't know if there is even anywhere to go with a sequel without re-treading the first movie?

I mean what the portal is re-opened then we have the 1st movie again?

There will not be a sequel. Which is fine, it did not really need one.

What I was hoping was this would pave the way for some Robotech and Gundam movies. Now, sadly, that seems not to be the case.

This movie is like Dredd in that it is pretty self contained so if there are no sequels at least I'm not left hanging.

The only way you'll get those movies is if they are made in Japan with a significantly reduced budget. The movie PR most reminded me of was Neon Genesis Evangelion, right down to the suits the pilots were wearing.

If PR had been a smashing success there certainly would have been a higher chance of those getting a look at.

I love that its a self contained story and that the mid-credits wasn't sequel bait but I do want more form this universe.

Yeah I actually respect that aspect. It seems nobody wants to tell self-contained stories anymore at least in blockbuster type films.

It was refreshing there wasn't some end shot with a claw breaking through or something? Even bigger films should be allowed to show a a full beginning and an ending to their story in one film and not be senselessly dragged out for the sake of it.

ASM was definitely sequel bait because they knew the movie would make money, thank goodness the PR film makers decided to make a self contained closed movie.

That I can agree with.

Well that is the good thing with PR, the end of the movie felt like a proper ending to the story, so if we dont get a sequel we still have an awesome movie with a proper ending.

While I would like to see a sequel, they ended the movie in a way that they could easily do without it. They ended it as a one-off, which was the right move. A sequel would almost feel forced

I guess I want a prequel more than a sequel
Those Russian pilot are so badass
I want to see more Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon
even Coyote Tango....

I dunno, I heard Turbo was tracking very soft and Dreamworks Animation has been very hit and miss as of late. Rise of the Guardians didn't do all that well. Just not sure if I can get into a movie about talking, racing snails.

Have you guys read the early tracking for RIPD OW...? Something around $17m. That's awful. Don't expect it to dent PR much. I know I'm being optimistic but IMO I still see 4th or 5th place most likely for it this weekend

^Well on comingsoon.net they think it will come 5th, hopefully it comes a little higher and manages to stay in the top 5 for a few weeks.

r.i.p.d.?

They had that at number 7. Another flop for Ryan Reynolds it seems, he cant seem to catch a break. Thought at this point I just want PR to be as high as possible with as low a drop as possible.
