Pacific Rim - Part 1

I think Evangelion movie is possible but because it's so complex thematically, it'll need a big time producer or director to back it up.

If all else, I think Gundam is more marketable. It has a huge world to play with and to me, it's Japan's answer to Star Trek/Star Wars.

I wouldn't be shocked if there will be an anime-tie in.

If the movie bombs I doubt we'll see any giant robot movies besides Transformers for a while.

If it's a hit we'll see.

Avatar had mecha elements. And so does the upcoming All You Need is Kill.

is the "Trespasser" Kaiju the one that is seen on the deck of the aircraft carrier? Also is the "axe-head" Kaiju a different one from the "Trespasser"? thanks

The kaiju on the aircraft carrier is the same monster seen getting punched by Gipsy Danger in the trailer. Not the rocket punch however, the punch we see when their fighting out in the ocean. Also, Axe-Head doesn't look to have a crocodile head, so...I wouldn't bet on them being same. It's possible The Trespasser was removed, or reworked into something else.

Even post Transformers, projects like Voltron and Robotech had issues getting off the ground.

Yeah that's kind of what I mean. You think Transformers would've kickstarted those, but it didn't.

I think the economy didn't help matters.

The thing is, these movies would cost a fortune to execute all the robot/mecha elements in live action. That's a lot for a studio to go all in on.

I just don't see how Evangelion could play with mainstream modern American audiences. At best I could see it doing Watchmen business, *at best.* Even I sort or resent all the conceits of Evangelion, though I do think it will be interesting if in fact the rebuild movies in fact turn out to be a continuation of the series.

Even WETA tried to do Evagelion. Or sorta. I never understand Weta's involvement with the adaptation of Evangelion. I've seen the concept art and such, but it was never green lit, never had a writer or director attached, and just disappeared into obscurity.

I think the original American rights holder, ADV was involved. I don't think they could ever get any financing worked out. Not sure how the deal is set up now and through who.

I was literally thinking about this today as I got back home tonight after watching The Hobbit.

In the early scripts, it was Osaka.

Osaka-san?

Ripley's loader vs Alien Queen fight in Aliens and the Matrix Zion vs Robot Squid fights were in inspired by mecha anime as well.

Its surprising we haven't seen a Mecha Vs Kaiju movie yet in the west outside of Power Rangers type stuff.

I'm still waiting for WB's Tobey Maguire produced Robotech movie.

Has he talked about that for the last 3 years or so?
I don't think they're even considering it anymore.

ok thanks. Hmmm then if that is the case it looks like Gipsy Danger skinned the Kaiju. I see the skeleton, organs and blood of the Kaiju on the deck of the carrier but no skin. I wonder what a Mark 2 Jaeger is like.

Glados heavy Pacific Rim Trailer. :awesome:

Evangelion would be kind of a Watchmen-esque gamble since the subject matter is so R-rated and heady. You couldn't PG-13 that down without it taking away everything it supposedly is.

Exactly. Evangelion would be like that Akira movie that is/was trying to get done. Or maybe worse. I personally think Gundam Wing (marketability reasons) or Big O has a chance.

That trailer is sweet. The Inception music really works for it. Sets an eerie-like tone.

I would kill for a Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann live action movie but the insane climax probably means the chances of that ever happening is close to zero.

Except they CAN'T be killed with missiles or bombs. At least not by one, or two, or 200. The earlier scripts, and the final one, clearly states that he first Kaiju took 3 days of CONTINUOUS bombardment to kill. Then its toxic blood wrecked the city it was attacking. Conventional tactics and weapons won't work against an uncoventional threat. Thus you must think outside the box.

Four barrages of missiles killed the first. That took three days?

You only saw that in cuts.

I don't think that the kaiju is skinned. I think it's decomposing. GDT explained that they decompose, and become toxic.

Not considering the paedofilia-aspect of what happens in the story... I doubt that could work at all outside of anime.

I wonder if the technicians in the background are monitoring for Kaiju activity. I wonder what those 3 mini globe graphics are in the lower left of the screen
