Pacific Rim - Part 3

Del Toro is one of a handful of filmmakers who has a deep and devoted fan base dating back to his Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth films. He also takes time to connect with his audience and is known for his self-deprecating and genial nature as well as his childlike glee for movies.
How else to explain this reaction from a devoted fan named ShanghaiShock: “If Pacific Rim loses to Grown Ups 2 in the box office, I'm going to head over to the marketing department of every studio that has a share of Pacific Rim and I will personally gut every single person in the marketing department.”

Classy.

Probably not something he wants to admit out loud to the media.

Their quoting people on forums and posting them as news.

They can go screw them selves. (Watch they'll get me next)

Yeah, I get being playful but that doesn't look great to normal people when nerds or fanboys talk like that. Even if that person meant it as a joke.

Seems like standard internet talk.

But your average joe....WTF is these Nerd Crazies?

So is Captain Planet in this or not?

Captain Planet needs a great film. NEEDS.

Captain Planet already has a film in the works. And it aint this one.

He's getting his own movie where he drives a new, eco-friendly K.I.T.T.

Tracking is poor and, no matter the brave face they're putting on, there is legit concern. I get that. But... why then is your first thing to do run to a fan forum? Putting your entire marketing strategy behind said fans got you where you are in the first place?

How is talking down those people who are going to see it anyway and not focusing all your attention on those general public-type going to help matters? That pretty much tells you their problem right there.

It's his fan forum all he did was make a couple of posts that takes all of 3 seconds.

Actually, Guillermo comes fairly often for a guy as busy as him, he's definitely pretty implicated in his fan forum, and I don''t see what the problem is here, we ask questions, he's on the forum, he answers.

Don't be so snarky FilmNerd, I don't think you have access to the kind of tracking information that they do, and you're not in charge of the marketing, so none of what you say is informed in any way.

Not a trace of snark in what I said. Stating the truth...and the truth hurts sometimes. You just don't like it.

He's on the forum pretty often. Its not really part of the marketing. He just partakes in the community that has sprung up around his films.

Back when he was still attached to the Hobbit he was even on the forums on TheOneRing.net.

Its the distributors who aren't doing jack to market this thing.

You don't know what you're talking about, you should keep quiet, and stop spreading your venom against the movie like on Boxoffice.com for example ;)

Plus, WB focused all their efforts on MOS, now it's Pac Rim's turn, tv spots are turning up more and more often, the clips released focused most of all on the human element. Honestly, I don't give a sh it about the general audience, at least, the movie exists, I just hope it does well enough to get a sequel, what I do know is that Guillermo said that the toys are selling really great, sold out in most places, that's good, and there's a lot of merchandising planned for the movie.

Seriously, if you're not sold with all the trailers, and footage released, I have no idea what your problem is, just happy that GDT made this movie, a geek fantasy.

Blame who you like; that doesn't change the fact that tracking is low. I love GDT, but in this case, I agree with FNJ. The reality is that the general audience awareness/anticipation is extremely low for a film of this type. The absolute last place he should be right now is catering to his strongest fans whom are already planning on being there opening night...but this may be out of his control. GDT has strong, devoted fans. Most of us know this. It still doesn't help much when seeking awareness for a Summer blockbuster. Marketing needs to focus 100% on the General Audience at this point. ...And it's possible that audiences may have already had enough of post-apocalyptic destruction this Summer.

I also suspect that there is a little bit of something else going on here relating to Mr. Tull's departure...

Classic fanboy fallacy. I should put The Rock's "It doesn't matter what you think!" here.

Do you have an extra $200 million I could borrow? I have this little drama I want to shoot on the fly.

You're devotion is appreciated, I'm sure, by del Toro and others, but it doesn't change the reality -- this film is having a problem with awareness. And the General Audience really needs to be there (preferably in repeat viewings) to make it a hit. Why don't we concentrate on seeing how this one performs before we consider sequels, eh?

Your second bolded quote is quite myopic.
