I agreeKevin Roegele said:I love Tom Cruise, he's both a talented actor and a genuinely charismatic screen icon. Look at all the great work he's done.....Rain Man, EYes Wide Shut, Mission Impossible trilogy, Legend (my personal favourite), The Last Samurai, War of the Worlds, Born on the Fourth of July, Collateral, Vanilla Sky, Cocktail....

I was being sarcastic; hence my use of the word "unfairly".Retroman said:I know this isn't the first time this has happened and i certainly didn't intend for that to come across in my post.I was just giving the revolting placenta story as an example.
Dunno about that. The truth is, the studios make TONS of money out of those big expensive movies. They´re an industry in themselves, generating tons of related revenue that´s way beyond mere BO profit. The studios make a lot of lower budget movies these days, in different genres and styles, but it´s in the blockbusters that are the big bucks.sithgoblin said:We talked about this in class yesterday (I'm a film student, btw). According to our teacher, it isn't because Tom Cruise has been getting bad publicity. He's been doing crazy s**t for years and he's still profitable. MI3 made a good profit.
Cruise was dumped because Hollywood is changing. The studios can't keep making films the way they have been, they just can't afford it. It used to be that a film had to be out for a few weeks before they knew if it was a hit or not. Now it's three days.
Cruise's deal with Paramount was good for them in that they had Cruise, a bankable star. In an industry where you can never know if you'll have a hit or a flop, Cruise guarenteed they'd make their money back. But the downside was that he had A LOT of clout with his contract there. Now they they've dumped him, it will be easier for them to not make projects they aren't interested in.
And that's what they want, flexibility now, because everything is changing. Stars who get paid 30 million a movie are on the way out. The studios are going to start promoting newer, cheaper actors, and eventually, big budget films won't be made anymore. We'll see lower budget, 20 million dollar films become the mainstream.
This isn't just my one teacher's opinion, btw, but pretty much the whole faculty. Take it as you will.
Oh, i see.Chris Wallace said:I was being sarcastic; hence my use of the word "unfairly".
Maybe starting over fresh with a new studio and being at all time low in terms of popularity will do him good.Chris Wallace said:The sad truth is that much of what has happened is the media's doing, but he kinda put the bullets in the gun. Can he turn this around? Absolutely. Will he? Only time will tell.
But for each hit they'll have 19 flops, which they lose money on. Big money. I'm hearing this from several sources: the industry is going to change.ultimatefan said:Dunno about that. Not in the short term, I believe. There are big budget movies being scheduled now as far as 2009. I think at least the studios will continue to make expensive movies based on properties that allow them to generate sequels and merchandise, like toys and games. Expensive disaster or historical epic movies may get pushed away.sithgoblin said:But for each hit they'll have 19 flops, which they lose money on. Big money. Cruise Apologizes to Shields
Tom Cruise has apologized to Brooke Shields for criticizing her use of anti-depressant medication when she was diagnosed with post-partum depression following the birth of her first child. The Mission: Impossible actor and Shields became embroiled in a war of words last year when Scientologist Cruise accused the Cheers actress of failing to understand psychiatry. Following Cruise's comments, Shields hit back calling them a "ridiculous rant" and a "disservice to mothers everywhere". But Shields told Jay Leno on his Tonight Show on Friday that Cruise came to her house recently in an attempt to heal their relationship. She said, "He came over to my house and gave me a heartfelt apology. I was so impressed with how heartfelt he was. "I did not feel that he was trying to convince me of anything other than the fact that he was deeply sorry. And I accepted it." Cruise's lucrative contract with Paramount was reportedly cancelled last month because of the comments he made about Shields. Cruise's spokesperson Arnold Robinson says, "It is true that his friendship with Ms. Shields has been mended. "(But) he has not changed his position about anti-depressants, which as evidenced by the black label warnings issued by the FDA on these types of drugs, are unhealthy."

Sava said:... see, there is no winning, even if he does come out and say "sorry" for everything he's done, people will still turn it around and say he was "forced" to do it.
I was just about to say that.If he didn't say sorry people would complain and when he does they still do.Sava said:... see, there is no winning, even if he does come out and say "sorry" for everything he's done, people will still turn it around and say he was "forced" to do it.
what you say makes no sense, if his PR was behind it, they would have come out with a statement or something like that. I doubt they would have gone to Shields and asked her to help him out.gvcool2 said:do you really think someone with such a strong sense of beliefs and so fixed on his views would just suddenly apologize for saying them...i think not, and convinently after his career has taken a turn for the worse no less
