There's no way around it, the first film was awful.

Maybe it was awful for you, but film like any other art is 100% subjective. So don't treat your opinion like its a fact.

I really think this thing is going to have trouble overcoming the bad word of mouth generated by the first. (General audiences because I know some fanboys liked it)

The film has mostly positive reviews, so I don't think that will be an issue. Its Spider-Man, and I think this is a character that can easily win audiences back.

The Rhino looks ridiculous.... a cross between Mega-Godzilla and a Transformer.

Rhino looks awesome, but to each their own.

Man, I really hate the idea of patterning any film on that Ultimate Universe crap from the books.

I love Ultimate Spider-Man. Once Brian Michael Bendis left entirely it lost its appeal, but the first 40 issues or so are quite solid and very well-written.

Awful? Hardly. I've rewatched it a handful of times over the last couple months and the more I watch the more I love it. Seriously watch it again, I bet it'll surprise you. If not, continue to cry about it.

I mean he has a right to not like it. As I said, film is subjective and there are no definitive opinions. A general consensus perhaps, but its up to the individual to form his or her own opinions about a movie.

But to outright say that the movie is awful, and there is no getting around it… sorry, but that's still just another opinion. No better than anyone else's.

Left entirely? He's been writing the book for 13 years straight so far. :woot:

But I think going the Ultimate route with Rhino was smart. It would have been dumb to have another giant cross species guy- I feel like this stays true to the original concept of the Rhino but takes it to a more modern level aesthetically speaking.

Well, maybe not any "better" per se. But certainly, there are informed and uninformed opinions. If Steven Spielberg, for instance, were to weigh in on the pros and cons of TASM, I would certainly take take his opinion (as an experienced and talented film maker/storyteller himself) to have more weight to it compared to "Spiderguy49834" on a message board (who has only ever watched movies/cartoons and read comics).

Yeah, they did. Longest uninterrupted run by a creative team ever (anywhere period?).

I meant to say Mark Bagely (artist)

Ah, yeah. He was definitely a huge part of the success of the Ultimate book- I still picked it up until Immonen left but I couldn't get into it anymore after the 1st relaunch. Bendis & Bagley created this synergy that made for something really special to read.

Going by your logic,WB shouldn't even bother with the MOS sequel

Not overly fond of the look, but I'm only going off one image. Giamatti's a great actor though, and I'm looking forward to his self-confessed hammy performance.

Totally disagree.

Didn't Bagley stay til #110 just so they could beat Stan/Jack's run on the FF?

But yeah, the first 40 or so issues are good- with the first 4 arcs being great imo.

Was it just so they could beat the record or were they enjoying their time working together? Either way it turned out really well and I credit that as one point to why the series was so well liked. I agree on the first several arcs being the best, for me it kinda went downhill around issue 60 with the Carnage arc.

The Rhino design looks like it's a pretty cool new twist on the character. My main reservation is that if Paul Giamatti is just piloting the thing, it's almost like it's the suit that's the villain and the guy inside is utterly interchangable. Which would be a shame, as Rhino - the CHARACTER - is one of my favourite villains in the Marvel Universe.

But that's a nitpicky concern, really. I'm a huge fan of Paul Giamatti, have been for like a decade, and I'm super-excited to see him playing a comic book character, particularly one I already love so much and never expected to see on the big screen. Rhino is arguably my most anticipated aspect of this film.

WTF was going through the designers & Webb's head when deciding on this design for Rhino?!

Paul confirmed that he is returning for sequels.

"I really hope people wait to see this thing in action before they start ****ting all over it."

which would be showing a lot of undeserved faith in cbm nerds, who have never waited for anything before *****ing about it.

Seems like most CBM nerds want the filmmakers to put little to no creative input into these movies. Does anyone really think THIS would work on film?

Hell yeah. Ultimate was the shi*. And am super glad that these movies are being based around em.

Love or hate the design - people won't be able to say Webb shirked the image of a Rhino.

The main concern with a cross-species Rhino is that it's REALLY easy to screw it up. If the effects aren't good, then it's going to stick out, especially once Spider Man starts to fight Rhino. Plus, it being a suit could also point to Oscorp being involved. Webb did compare Oscorp to the Tower of Babel after all, so it makes sense.
