The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Paul Giamatti IS Rhino - Part 2

Eh, I am perfectly okay with Rhino being used in the manner he was. Honestly, when it comes to Spidey villains that should be a main villain in a movie, Rhino isn't one of them. He is either a muscle type character with no development, or he is on the Bond beginning/ending levl like Shocker.

The problem is that in his VERY brief screentime, he was more like an offensive, Russian, Mysterio with a robot more than anything else. For someone like Mysterio, this level of cheese is fine. But, Rhino? Offensive, stupid, and painful.

You know, I'm getting a little tired of people using this whole "If you're so smart why don't you make the damn movie" shtick as an argumentation tactic. Look, you don't have be a chef to taste the food, so my honest answer to that question is that I bloody well don't know. If I was creative enough to figure these types of things out, I'd probably have a job writing screenplays. All I can tell you is that I loathed every bit of what I saw of him in this movie, and that they need to go back to the drawing board. I can't see something like this going over well in a Sinister Six movie where these villains will be hunting down and tormenting Spider-Man for 2+ hours. Not with idiots like this and Electro. The Little Rascals would fare better.

I apologise if it sounded snarky but I meant it as a genuine question.

When a person says they didn't like a character or thought he or she was poorly handled I generally am interested in hearing how that person would've liked to see the character.

Fair enough. My son called it a big rip off. He was looking forward to this duel for the initial shot in the trailer. Perhaps the bigger duel will be in ASM3.

I've always wanted the Bond like opening sequence battle. I suppose that was Richard's battle in flight.

What did he think it was a rip-off of?

Edit: unless you/he meant rip-off in terms of not getting what you paid for.

Yea I was kinda disappointed we didn't see the Rhino fight, but that's what ASM 3 and Sinster Six is for lol.

The only reason people feel ripped off is because they should have never advertised Rhino at all. I mean they basically gave away all his screen time in the trailers.

I'm already tired of waiting for the next movie to deliver on what should have occurred in the previous entries in this series.

Yeah, he's got like no character or motivation, but I think that's the point. I figured Rhino was supposed to be a thematic threat. To represent the looming, seemingly unstoppable danger psychotics bent on destruction pose to innocents that we're going to see in future films, the kind of danger Spider-Man is destined to deal with.

Yeah, so I saw it for the third time last night and when the movie ended I heard a guy to my right talking to his gf, saying how he thought Rhino was just ridiculous.

Rhino is ridiculous. What do you expect him to have some deeply layered complexity to his character? Rhino is a dumb villain. That's what he's supposed to be for the most part.

I love the way he was used in the film and couldn't ask for more.

I found Electro to be the dumber villian. And what was up with them ripping off Roger Corman's Fantastic Four music with his theme?

I didn't like any of the villians personalities but his was at least understandable to his character.

IF he was the only vilains then it would've been a problem but we got development for 2/3 so it's fine imo.

Yeah, Rhino is ridiculous. But, there is a line. They crossed it.

Exactly. That was the point. To have little development or no development. But to use him as simple thug encounters for Spidey so we're familiar with what he is for the next film.

I had zero problems with how the character was used in the movie. I've always wanted little bit cameos from villains who couldn't be the main villain. The only problem I had was that Giamatti was just a bit TOO hammy.

It worked for me. I always thought Rhino's lines from comics/cartoons were eye rollers because he refuses to see the truth about himself.

This. Rhino was simply cringeworthy, and why the hell would you get an excellent character actor like Giamatti just to have him do some hammy bulls*** like that?

Batroc is a silly cheesy villain in the comics as well but they reworked him in a way that made him look like a legit character and not some stupid caricature.

I can't picture this guy being anything other than a punchline in future installments.

I loved the Rhino finale. I understand the disapointment you express tho, trailers were misleading about how much we would see of him, and Paul was certainly missused.

But I just love how this final scene brings closure to the emotional voyage of peter, and his decision to maintain and inspire hope.

Not only that but they used Batroc brilliantly within the scope of the plot and it worked. Great use of a minor villain in that story.

Rhino was overly silly. Hell, the last ten minutes was so damn corny. Between that horses*** with the science project kid, the triumphant music, and cheesy ass Rhino, I walked out of the movie a little irritated.

I love the Rhino mecha, the anger issues, and the quips at his expense but I wish Giamatti didn't have the accent.

That bit was overkill.

I could hardly make out anything he was saying; especially in the beginning of the movie.

It was a little disappointing. We've seen the Goblin, but this was Rhino's first bit of screen time.

I literally couldn't make out a word save for "Spider!" in the beginning. The fact that he was so unintelligible just compounded how ridiculous and annoying he was.
