i was hoping they would have added atleast something new.
The PlayStation 3 may be receiving a large firmware update this fall, according to a rumor from VG247. The firmware 3.0 update is said to be "a huge overhaul" and was compared to the Xbox 360's NXE in some respects. The new features are said to include a reputation system that will allow users to evaluate each other and view the reps of other players. No doubt aiding in the reputation system will be a "grief reporting system," allowing players to take pictures of offensive users and report them to Sony. Someone at SCEA is going to be busy parsing user reports.
Other features may allow background downloads of game patches, and simultaneous HDMI and digital optical output for audiophiles. The update is reportedly planned to hit before Christmas. As always, we classify this as a rumor until we hear something official from Sony. It doesn't sound like an unrealistic wish list of features, so we'll be looking for more details in the coming months.
And here's your date
PS3 system software update version 3.00
Concurrently with the release of new PS3, system software will be upgraded to version 3.00 on September 1, 2009. The update adds various user-friendly features such as the Whats New screen, where users can quickly browse the new items available in PlayStation Store as well as their recently played games directly on the XMB (XrossMediaBar), with short cuts to each piece of content.
PS3 will evolve continuously with the system software updates, further improving the operability and enhancing the user experience available through the network. PS3 owners will be able to enjoy new features by simply updating the PS3 system software to version 3.00 via the System Update function on the XMB*.

awesome, thanks!!!how the heck could EA prevent Sony from implimenting a feature like that? There is a **** storm hitting the interwebs right now. It has to do with EA being the possible reason why Cross Game Chat is not capable yet on the PS3. The EA forums are getting wrecked right now. Yikes. It all started from a forum poster at N4G. He is an insider at Sony. He correctly gave the rundown on the Slim and FW 3.0, before anything was released about it. They were trying to get it worked in to 3.0, but couldn't work around some issues. Here's the story.

If true, then that kind of sucks for those who really want this feature. I could care less for it, but there seems to be large percentage of PS3 owners who do.

I like the large text. Now I don't have to squint...
Just downloaded the update. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far, although why do I now have the Slim logo on my PS3 loading screen?
