PlayStation Firmware Updates

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3174963

The PlayStation 3 may be receiving a large firmware update this fall, according to a rumor from VG247. The firmware 3.0 update is said to be "a huge overhaul" and was compared to the Xbox 360's NXE in some respects. The new features are said to include a reputation system that will allow users to evaluate each other and view the reps of other players. No doubt aiding in the reputation system will be a "grief reporting system," allowing players to take pictures of offensive users and report them to Sony. Someone at SCEA is going to be busy parsing user reports.

Other features may allow background downloads of game patches, and simultaneous HDMI and digital optical output for audiophiles. The update is reportedly planned to hit before Christmas. As always, we classify this as a rumor until we hear something official from Sony. It doesn't sound like an unrealistic wish list of features, so we'll be looking for more details in the coming months.

All speculation at this point of course.

Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.00) adds a number of great new features that we’re excited to share with you. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. First, you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB (Xross Media Bar). We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience.

Additional highlights from update 3.00 include:

* “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.
* Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.
* Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
* PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
* Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.
* Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

PS3 SUCKS!!!:down:mad:

JK,:oldrazz::D awesome, thanks!!!:D:up:

There is a **** storm hitting the interwebs right now. It has to do with EA being the possible reason why Cross Game Chat is not capable yet on the PS3. The EA forums are getting wrecked right now. Yikes. It all started from a forum poster at N4G. He is an insider at Sony. He correctly gave the rundown on the Slim and FW 3.0, before anything was released about it. They were trying to get it worked in to 3.0, but couldn't work around some issues. Here's the story.

If true, then that kind of sucks for those who really want this feature. I could care less for it, but there seems to be large percentage of PS3 owners who do.

how the heck could EA prevent Sony from implimenting a feature like that?

It all started with custom soundtracks. Sony figured a way to do universal in game soundtracks through a FW, but it did not work with 5% of the games out there. One of those games was an EA game. When they heard that a FW was coming out that made their game looked gimped, they went crazy. They threatened to pull support for the system etc. So Sony settled for away that each developer had to implement themselves. A little bit later Sony figured a way for Cross Game chat, but it didn't work with all the games. This included another EA game and the whole thing blew up again. So that's the rundown. Again this could be all made up, but he was spot on with things in the past.

Oh I see. Why cant Sony then say something that it will work for all future games and force EA to have it supported in all their upcoming titles? Put it on them to make it work

anyone else having problems connecting to psn after the update?

i did at first but when i rebooted and let the auto sign in thing do its thing and i went to get a drink came back and i was signed in and had no problems. its just that so many people were downloading and updating to 3.00 that it made people trying to sign in have problems.

So Sony have landed themselves in yet another mess today.

Users in the UK who have received a refurb from Sony will NOT get the BBC iPlayer because they are not UK consoles. If you do have a refurb you can check by making yourself a new account, sign up to PSN and your default location will be Bulgaria.

That's right, you are now using a Bulgarian PS3.

On another note, the new XMB text is gigantic and at present there's no way to change it.

That sucks for you guys. Hopefully they will find a work around or just give every region the iPlayer (fingers crossed).

The text doesn't really bother me though.

The problem with the iPlayer is that it's from the BBC. By law you must own a UK TV license to be able to watch BBC programming ruling out the availability for all regions.

The main concern right now from others is that the video store functionality will not be present on the Bulgarian machines when it becomes available.

Just downloaded the update. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far, although why do I now have the Slim logo on my PS3 loading screen?

they changed their logo to that. I guess they didnt wanna be associated with Spiderman text anymore lol. They said the font of their previous logo was too small and they liked the large PS3 logo better.

i like the new font size, there was too much empty space b4 in my opinion. Helps fill up the screen. Tho im not a fan of the animated backgrounds costing money.

I don't know if it was the new update, but I just read an article that said games were freezing because of the new update.

Last night I installed the new update and popped in Batman:AA and although it didn't freeze I coudn't use the d-pad controls, when I pushed a d-pad controll the top half of my screen went black. I took the new game out and cleaned the disc, turned my PS3 off and back on and pooped Batman back in and everything was fine. Just wanted to give the heads up. This has never happened before and it's suspicious it did happen right after I installed the new update correctly.

I finally have my PS3 back up and running. I downloaded the update and I have to say I like it. Add me to the list of those who prefer the new, bigger text

The bigger text is way better. My only problem, and this is a nitpick, is that they have two PlayStation Store icons in the Games and PlayStation Network sections. That's really stupid.
