About the whole R vs. PG-13 rating:
Yeah, an R rating does not automatically somehow make a film more "cool," nor does it automatically somehow make a film less likely to be a blockbuster.
But in the case of the Alien franchise specifically, it's simply a matter of sticking to tradition. The Alien (and by extension Predator/AVP) franchise has *always* been rated R (with the sole exception of the utterly useless AVP '04). It's horror sci-fi, and has always leaned more towards the horror end than the sf. So making this a PG-13 movie would be an unmitigated disaster for the *sole* reason that it goes completely against everything the previous movies stood for, and against the target audiences the franchise has always aimed at.
It's not open to negotiation. This is an R-rated movie. Or else it is an epic fail, right out of the box. Guar-own-teed.
