Prometheus - Part 8

it was an ending that literally every tv show, every movie, every story on this planet in the whole history could have. its zero. Cuse and Lindelof deserved to be punched in the face.

Oh I agree, but characters I love and watched over 5 years got an ending that personally struck a chord with me. When weighed against that I couldn't care less why there were polar bears on a desert island.

Big questions from Alien

* Who sent the distress single?

* The eggs has a blue grip to ward off unsuspecting visitors, who put the grid there?

* How did the Wayland corperation know about the LV-426 to place a spy?

None of the above answered in Prometheus, and you know what? I couldn't care less.

To be fair, it depends who is doing the CGI. If it's WETA or ILM then it will definately cost more than models but it it is someone like tippet studios then I think the cost are significantly cheaper (obviously you get what you pay for though and the chances are the CG will look shoddy).
Oh, no doubt that the saying "you get what you pay for" still rings true, but even still, movie-quality cgi is incredibly expensive, but the money is balanced out because typically, cgi is easier than figuring out how to do something practically.

If I was a director I would use praticle effects unless I absolutely had to. Unless the effects are done by ILM or Weta they look very CG and it just takes you out of the movie.

...and by "easier" I mean from the point of view of the director and practical effects teams...everything's easier if YOU don't gotta do it, lol

its not the same planet so why should they anwer it? it was a very mean yet smart choice from Scott and Lindelof. everything looks like Alien yet its not. now they both can look how the masses react. if they get a negative reaction(its happening) they will conifrm that its a different planet, different eggs, diferent space jockey and different space ship. yet it looks and feels the same.

i did go back to he first page of all the alien prequel threads. and i read almost all of them. and sorry guys. but almost all who wanted an alien prequel you all wanted the answers. inception sound boom

My point is they could have answered those questions if they so chose to make that movie, I was happy with what I was presented with.

spider neil if they would make a 100% prequel to alien with the same ship and the same space jockey they would had to explain it and give answers. because there would be nothing else to tell .

If they had made a 100% prequel I think the reaction would have been more positive and they would probably have made more money but I really l what I got even though it may not make enough money for sequel.

Can someone explain why it would prevent ATMOM from being made? Unless it's really, really spoilery.

del Toro said that he thinks its to similar for him to do it.

Yes, I read that, I remember reading that specially the ending was too similar. I havent read the book, that's why I'm asking :oldrazz:

Is it really that similar?

ATMOM is similar in that the protagonists find a deserted "alien" city, deduce that those "aliens" had something to do with our creation, and then discover that the city isn't that deserted after all. Thematically, it has something in common with Prometheus, but the exposition (and where it takes the themes) is completely different. One of the most interesting things about Prometheus, for me, is that it comes up with the idea of humans who are still completely alien. They make us from them. In ATMOM, the Old Ones are about as different to us as a physical organism could be, and they make us by mistake or as a joke (which is foreshadowed by folk lore in the story). The climax of ATMOM is that the Old One's deadly servants, the Shuggoth, are still found to exist deep in a dark sea shore underneath the Antarctic. The climax of Prometheus sees our protagonist try to follow our creators home, to find out more.

Some similar themes, but very different stories. It would have been interesting to have both films side by side to compare.

The story line from Prometheus has a little to do with ATMOM, but I think that he referred to the sthetic aspects. My hopes are that this movie gives green light to Del Toro's adaptation to the book, I've been waiting for it since forever, it's time for Lovecraft to make it into the big screen

I don't think the "aesthetic aspects" would be very similar. "Prometheus" is set on an alien planet, while ATMOM is concerned with the Antarctic desert. The city of the Old Ones in ATMOM bears little relation to the Engineer's temple or ship. They both have friezes, but that's about it. ATMOM also ends on a very weird note, when someone sees or dreams a mirage of Kadath. It's a much more peculiar and cryptic story than "Prometheus".

Just got back from watching this. I absolutely loved it. :hrt:

I don't understand what was so divisive about the movie. As for the "questions" that the movie supposedly leaves open well I feel that it actually answered a good deal of them. The most important one too.

It's pretty clear that these "engineers" have different factions and philosophies towards life and terraforming. The one we saw in the beginning was willing to sacrifice itself to give birth to life. It had no fear of death.

While the one that was in cryo in the weapons manufacturing "facility" had a great fear of dying (holograms of them running from their own weapons and the one that chased after Shaw struggled for its life against the proto-Xenomorph). Clearly the latter group of Space Jockeys weren't happy with the decision with creating life on earth thus sending those WMD to earth to eliminate the life the self sacrificial and seemingly more benevolent faction of Jockey had given Earth.

I was wholly satisfied with this movie and the set up for the sequel is interesting to say the least. I feel Ridley will further elaborate on the clashing views from different factions of Jockey if Shaw ever reaches their home planet. Shaw kept wondering why they created humans and then wanted to destroy them. Well the answer is fairly simple. The Jockeys are no different than us just like Earth where we have people with different religions/philosophies & cultures. The more militarized faction just didn't agree with the other group and their decision to give Earth life.

Guess they can go further into the schism between the two in the sequel.

10/10

One thing did bother me (okay, not bother but made me chuckle) is when the captain (Stringer Bell) out of nowhere says 'this must be a weapons base (paraphasing). Ha ha! where the hell did he get that piece information from?! I admit I needed that information but C'MON.

Thanks for the compliment dark_b. I really do appreciate the kind words. :)

I'm definitely planning on writing a much longer review explaining why I personally thought this movie was compelling. A bit tired right now but I promise I'll write a more in depth review either later tonight or tomorrow morning.

The write up you quoted though is basically why I found the movie really engaging and satisfying myself. If you have a question in particular as to why I enjoyed certain aspects feel free to ask them. I'd be more than glad to discuss this movie with you.

It's good to see it has generated such continuous discussion regardless of whether or not some enjoyed it or not. Love when a movie does that.

some spoilers

i asked about his question. and some said that when Weyland goes with the crew to the temple that the mutated Fifield is still running around . here is a pic from the trailer. you see how they shoot at someone? Wayland is behind.

so some of my friend watched the movie today and i asked them how it happened. they told me that when the attack is happening that Waylend ,David,Shaw,... are still inside. and they are still inside when they burn Fifield .

now comes the interesting part. the mutated Fifield attacks a man in the garage that is inside the big vehicle truck. then they push him on the ground and they drive on him with the vehicle and then it drives outside.

they changed this in the editing room. they filmed it so that Fifield attack's prometheus when Wayland and the crew are walking to the truck.
-the door opens and Waylands bodyguard's shoot aat Fifield
-they run inside the truck
-Fifield kills some man and Janek comes down .
-they start burning Fifield
-the driver in the truck drives on top of Fifield. Shaw,David,Wayland are inside the truck
-the truck drives outside prometheus to the temple.

I really don't understand why Prometheus is getting such a low reception, to me, it's more important to create an intelligent story than an outstanding action flick. It seemed to me that it had a really interesting plot with a lot of smart references and points of view, it seems to me that some people just don't know how to watch a movie without being awed by Hollywood-iconic-pre-fabricated scenes and scenarios.

Spill.com is going to have another Prometheus podcast but this time discussing the criticism and more in depth spoilery thoughts about the movie.

Because it isn't that intelligent of a story. It is like trying to watch a murder mystery written by an 8 year old. It is amusing, but not at all intelligent.

In other news, Prometheus only made 20 million this weekend. Looking like it will have trouble getting to 300 million.

$217,458,000.

Well beyond the $120-$130 mill. price tag. Not bad for a rated R film. And I know a ton of folks who still havn't managed to catch it again.

Add another 50+ million for marketing. This movie needs to clear 300 million at the very least.
