Eternals Rotten Tomatoes watch thread

A few days ago I speculated that it might finish around 45%. That seems like a possibility now.

As someone who lived through early 2000s marvel movies, it’s nice to see this kind of humbling, especially for certain folks who acted like RT is the “be all, end all” indicator of quality. Maybe now we can all move past RT as some sort of godsend to mankind.

and I say this as someone who lived and breathed marvel as a kid on Saturday mornings

Yeah, that's not going to happen.

Man, reading some of the reactions on here and other parts have been pretty hilarious. It’s not the end of the world if Eternals ends up rotten

The fact people still care about what critics think is ridiculous. Go watch the movie and make up your own mind

I've been saying this very thing for years in these sorts of discussions & I'll continue to say it for years to come.

Reading some of the posts the past few pages it seems like people have let the RT rating suck some of the hype they had for seeing this film which both saddens & angers me.

Yeah, that's not going to happen.
While that may be true, it’s been fun seeing posts on the MCU subreddit saying stuff like “don’t listen to critics, buy a ticket and judge the movie for yourself!”

ya know, stuff people have been making fun of for years

It took one badly-reviewed movie for Marvel fans to turn into DC fans haha.

I find it more an annoyance than anything, especially when you're having a discussion about a film's quality & the RT rating is brought up as if that's a discussion ender for how good/bad a film is.

It will interesting to see where the audience score lands on this. It's much harder to review bomb on RT now so the Captain Marvel debacle is no longer really possible.

I think it's likely the audience score will be higher than Iron Man 2 and Thor 2, and maybe a few other MCU movies.

I generally find RT to be useful in keeping my expectations in check if I decide to watch a movie that I was anticipating with bad reviews. Though I don’t view it as some objective barometer of quality, but generally speaking my feeling generally tends to align with critics more than they don’t with a few exceptions. That being said, as a guy who enjoys the Snyder DC films it has been an interesting last few days seeing a lot of the same Marvel fans who used to screenshot compare BvS’s RT score with Civil War’s RT score turn against RT because now one MCU movie was rated “rotten” for once. It’s an interested changing of the tides that I must admit I kind of get a sick kick out of seeing. Many MCU fans are now doing their equivalent to Snyder fans “Disney pays critics” with their accusations that the critics who didn’t like the movie are doing it because it has diversity or some crap; ignoring that many of those same(white males by the way) critics gave good reviews to Shang-Chi, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel. It’s utterly unhinged, but kind of sad behavior to see unfold but my reaction has been this:

Like I said, schadenfreude.

For what it's worth, I wasn't really a huge fan of Birds of Prey. I didn't hate the movie, but one test I have is after the movie has been out a while, have I either watched it again or had the desire at least to watch it again. With Birds of Prey, I just never have. I have no doubts some reviews came at that movie from a sexist place. But, I at the same time cannot say I loved it either
I definitely hate the movie personally, regardless of the sexist place the criticisms initially came from. I just don't like that movie. It seemed more like a Margot Robbie vanity project than an actual BoP film. Not to mention the pandering shallow Feminism in the movie. Luckily I hate WW84 a lot more tho.

The problem I get with Eternals is that it didn't live up to the hype of being different, while simultaneously trying to keep the standard Marvel formula. And you ended up with a terrible film that pleased nobody. I will say this, Eternals definitely doesn't deserve to be "the first rotten MCU movie". I think Marvel had other prior films that are just as deserving imo.

Your argument is not well formed here. What are you suggesting exactly? Black Widow has 436 reviews on Tomato Meter right now. Black Panther has 525. WW84 has 435.

What does the count prove?

Also, Birds of Prey got much better reviewed than Suicide Squad, which is where Margot Robbie debuted as Harley Quinn.
That's the point. Venom has 300 some odd reviews. Shang-Chi? 320. Venom 2? 240. The Suicide Squad, 350.

But you just named three movies with female leads, who speak out against sexism, and Black ****ing Panther. The right wing's favorite toy for at least a month. It's almost like we got a lot of "extra" reviews for the movies that the right didn't like. Captain Marvel has 4 less reviews then Endgame and 60 more then Infinity War.

Birds of Prey wasn't a zeitgeist film. I love it, but it isn't a movie that got a lot of attention. Outside of the fact that a lot of people were upset that they made an all female lead flick. And yet it somehow ended up with more reviews then Civil War and 6 less then BvS. That it and Captain Marvel have the same score on RT doesn't really feel like a coincidence either.

It has pleased people. But I do agree with your overall sentiment.

It's almost like that doesn't matter since Black Panther still has a 96% even with that extra influx of reviews.
Captain Marvel was also very well received by critics so I don't know what you're going on about. So was BoP. It was the audience that rejected BoP at the box office.
