Season 6, Episode 9 "Battle of the Bastards" Discussion Thread

Really enjoyed the episode. Things played out as expected, but I still held out hope for Rickon.

that is exactly what i said lol

oh shut up. I'll buy you a beer later. we're fighting here. :funny:
I thought the idea was that Jon wasn't attacked. I did not realize you meant that weren't specifically targeting him from the get go. I didn't get it because that seems strange considering how the fight plays.

I don't drink, so beer is of no use to me. :oldrazz:

I'll take that ale Reek if Darth isn't having it.

Oh... he's being forced to drink... i am Yara in this situation.

DRINK! DRINK! DRINK!

Shifting to Meereen, we get a triple-dragon action sequence, which we’ve never had before. What were your goals for that sequence and how tricky was it to do an action scene with three virtual dragons?

Well it helps having Joe Bauer and Steve Kullback (VFX supervisor and producer). The dragons are really their baby so after you previz it and shoot the live action elements it’s really a case of turning it over to them and watching what they turn out.

For this sequence David and Dan said that what they wanted to see was a “demonstration” of what’s to come. So I tried to approach it in the most elegant, epic, big-movie way I could.

Man, the last 13 episodes are going to be insane if that Battle of Fire was just a demonstration of what these dragons are going to be doing in the final episodes of the show.

Kind of makes me glad they are doing 13 episodes instead of 20. Now they can pour the resources of 20 episodes into 13 episodes which means bigger vfx spectacle. This show is likely going to go out with one of the biggest bangs in television history

fun fact same director who did tonight's episode also did hardhome he's a keeper HBO

She had credibility before all of the gathered Lords deliberating Lysa's death. She wouldnt be asking anything of them, just giving them information that would precipitate its own reaction.

Littlefinger's hold on the Vale is dependent on keeping those Lords and Robyn in line. If Robyn and those lords learn the truth, he's finished. They don't like him and they will take her word over his.

Robin likes him though, that's the bad thing

The Lord of Light did not tell Melisandre to bring back Jon. She did that because Davos asked her to try, she had given up.

that seems to be key. same for Thoros and Berric. Only when he had give up did he receive the boon.

What gave Mel and Thoros the 'power' was them literally begging. IMO.

"please"

no room for filler either. it's time to strap yourself in and enjoy the ride because the pace is full steam ahead.

anyone else think Wildfire is gonna make an appearance soon Tyrion name dropped it with his convo with Dany and i think it might be the "rumor" Cersei and Qyburn spoke of last week

Well unless we see a genocide in Dorne next EP, there's gonna be some filler next season.

Damn, I just finished watching this episode and bah-gaad this was EPIC. The opening with the dragons, those dragons were incredible and grey worm slickly slitting the throats of those slave masters...Rickon biting it was just, ugh but Jon and the battle were phenomenal and that f***er Ramsay getting his was fantastically satisfying. For a minute there I thought Jon was going to beat him to death whch would have been fine, somewhat; but Sansa needed a win over this POS and she got it. Justice! I need to watch this again immediately.

Yeah, just gonna have to whole-heartedly disagree there. When Jon was getting crushed under that wall of bodies, I could barely breathe myself. No other ep of this show ever got to me like that. And I never got into the "tragic love story" of Jon and Ygritte, so that did nothing for me, lol. The scene of Davos at Shireen's pyre got to me far more. And the quiet moment of triumph when the Stark flag replaces the Bolton one had me wanting to stand up and applaud. But just in terms of filming the battle itself, I just felt this one (AND "Hardhome") had much more cinematic flair and atmosphere than "Watchers on the Wall" (though that's my #4 so I still love it). As great as Neil Marshall is, Miguel Sapochnik is officially my new GoT directing MVP.

i totally agree. my adrenaline was going and i chewed off just about all my fingernails lol
i really enjoyed the cinematography and the POVs it took. it was gory and brutal, but i was able to stomach it easier because of everything going on. it was intense and i appreciate that they used historical references of ancient battles.

a great contrast for me showed when Davos restrained his archers because he was afraid of killing his own men, while Ramsay just had them keep firing away, not caring if the shot his army or Jon's.

Oh yeah, I thought that was a great touch.

so who technically is the Lord of Winterfell right now? Sansa? Jon?

and i wonder why Jon didn't correct Ramsay when he accused him of breaking his vow to the night watch. Ramsay said he's heard things about Jon, about being an amazing swordsman, but i guess people don't know he died right? unless they were there?

That's exactly what the rumor is that she is talking about. All the wildfire that the Mad King stored up under King's Landing.

Leaks say she uses it to deal with her enemies. If you want to know how she uses it I can tell you, but I won't if you want to be surprised.

Bran is lord of winterfell, technically.

but in the way you mean, Sansa.

oh and tormund/davos = gold. we got the 'long night' quote we've been wondering about

The story of his resurrection doesn't seem to have spread throughout the North. I doubt anyone would believe it, and Jon would have wasted his time trying to argue whether his vow was fulfilled when he died which he can't prove to Ramsay.

As for who is Lord of Winterfell, Bran would be, but he is missing so Sansa would run the House until he returns. Jon being a bastard he isn't supposed to be able to inherit Winterfell. Westeros laws say he needs to officially become a Stark to do that and to do that he needs a decree from the King (Tommen). But the North largely considers itself it's own territory with its own laws and ways of doing things, and I don't think any of them give a flying **** about Tommen's decrees and opinions on Northern matters.
