Comics Sensational Spider-Man 28 preview

Well that's Marvel for you. Always taking the shameful and easy way out. When the cheap shock value has worn off, they find a quick and easy cheap fix to the mess they made.

In this case, Ock not knowing Spidey's identity when he returned, so they could return their relationship to the way it always was, because they had foolishly thought fans would not mind Ock being dead. WRONG!!! They had to bring him back post haste.

A female Octopus is no substitute for Octavius.

Well, I wouldn't have minded if Doctor Octopus had stayed dead. There are plenty of past stories with him...it's not like he was a new character, haha.

But, yeah, it was a dumb decision. Just like the resurrection of Aunt May was a really dumb decision.

And going back on their original plan of having Ben Reilly be the one true Spider-Man. That was a dumb decision, in my opinion. But that one I will give them a little credit. The fans freaked out and they gave them, basically, what they wanted in the end. But I was a Ben fan, and it saddened me. :(

Well thank god that was a minority feeling.

Riiiiiight, so it's ok to kill off a classic cool character as long as there's plenty of old stories to read with them in it???

But, yeah, it was a dumb decision. Just like the resurrection of Aunt May was a really dumb decision.

Aunt May's death was touching and well written. Ock's death was cheap shock value. Kill off Ock?? Nevah!! He had to return. And he did.

Peter Parker is the one true Spider-Man. Not some silly blonde clone. Be glad they went with that decision.

But that one I will give them a little credit. The fans freaked out and they gave them, basically, what they wanted in the end.

Yes, they did listen to the fans sometimes back then.

Wish they would now.

I didn't say that it's ok to kill him because he had past stories. I said, I, me...myself...wouldn't mind if he stayed dead. There are enough past stories with Doc Ock I can read if he were to have stayed dead. That's all. I'm not JUSTIFYING it, haha. You love taking me out of context.

Yeah, his death was shock value. I don't know about cheap though. The story was pretty kick ass.

That's right, Peter Parker is the one true Spider-Man and Ben Reilly WAS Peter Parker, haha.

Actually, they kind of are. Quesada and JMS have said they want to take Spidey back to a Stan Lee-esque Spider-Man. Isn't that what many fans here want? No totems, unmaskings, Osborn twins, etc? No more constant shocking moments and all that? Just some straight forward Spider-Man stories?

I'm not saying that's what they PLAN to do. But that's what a Stan Lee-esque Spider-Man would be to me. Peter Parker balancing his life as Spider-man and Peter Parker, and keeping things simple.

Actually, in #25 you will see that Conners injects it into his son somewhere near the beginning of the storyline. He also says "the Rock" told him to do it, which also makes me assume it was around the beginning of the story.

You know Connors is messed up when he starts formulating his villainous schemes by watching wrestling.

:p

actually the impression i got was that people didnt mind ock dying. it hekped further the character of kaine and yes, having good past stories easily would have made up for him being dead. there really is only so much you can do - the proof is how badly theyve used him since his return. i think what made them think they had to bring him back was becos some idiot decided an "ock" character was needed and made lady octopus, who was totally unneccessary and quite lame. now he's around im glad, but like may i wuda preferred him to stay dead.

No, I'm asking you is that how you feel. You think it's ok to see classic characters killed off, as long as you have plenty of old stories with them in it to read.

Wierd train of thought. That's all I'll say.

Story was great. Ending was cheap.

A pity they didn't think of that before they did totems, unmaskings, Osborn twins and the Other nonsense they've done.

Oh how I yearn for those type of stories again.

Shortest character death I've ever seen in Spidey. He was back in less than 2 years.

People minded.

No way BC is a poor mans Catwoman, Lizard.
Felicia is way cooler.

you're going on how quick he was back as to whether people minded? no no no no no. he was back so quick as coincidence. if u remember it was shortly before MJ died and around the same time Aunt May was back -- they were tryin to take the character back to the good ol' days due to sales falling. sales fell due to horrible end to clone saga with ben takin over the reigns. not really anything to do with ock himself, hence why he wasnt used(at least properly) for a good few years after he was back.

you're name is actually Doc Ock. whats even the point in arguin this?

No, Octavius himself was missed. His death did not have the spectacularism that Norman Osborn's did in ASM#122. He did not have a bitter son like Harry to carry on his legacy. No, they gave us a pink haired female Octopus.

The fans wanted the regular Ock back. Plain and simple. Yes it was one of the many mistakes they had to clean up from the clone saga.

Well I can see there's no point in debating with you, since you judge people by their usernames, and therefore assume they're completely close minded to reasonable debate

No, that's not how I feel. I told you I wasn't trying to justify it. He was killed, by Kaine. What do you want ME to do about it? There are like 30 odd years of Spider-Man stories that had many appearances of Doc Ock. I was just saying that maybe the character is dead in the current stories, but not dead to Spider-Man fans, who have plenty of back issues to choose from.

You may have thought the ending was cheap, I thought it was pretty intense.

Originally, Ben was the original Peter Parker. Remember that they changed it due to the fan outcry? I wasn't one of the fans angry about it. I was one of the fans who liked Ben Reilly and didn't mind. The way that the story was supposed to go, Ben was Peter. Therefore, the one TRUE Spider-Man. But, going on the notion of the actual storyline, yes...Ben was the clone. And it saddens me heavily. :(

You dislike the Totem storyline, but I don't. I loved it and thought it was a cool story. Should have never reintroduced it with The Other, it jumped the shark as I said in another thread. Book of Ezekiel was a fitting and proper ending to the storyline.

Sins Past was all right but it was just a really dumb idea. If you read those old stories it's actually quite impossible. And, yes, The Other wasn't the poster child of a well executed Spider-Man event, heh. As for the unmasking, that's to be decided. So far I've seen it handled with respect and no signs of trouble...yet. We'll see.

I know you yearn for those stories. You really love Stan Lee, haha. And the "haha" is to show I'm joking around/playing around.

It wasn't what I was expecting... but, yeah, it was good.

It is told -- heavy on narration -- from the perspective of one of Peter's students. In short order we find a lot out about this kid, Jordon. He's into science, wants to be a marine biologist, and is counting on help from his teacher, Mr. Parker...

The morning after the big reveal, he and his mother are watching it replayed on the news. Shocked, to say the least. Jordon's lab partner -- a girl he has a mad crush on -- calls him for the first time, frantic and excited. They agree to meet in front of the school. She thinks Jordon will be interviewed and wants to be in on it, but he doesn't mind being used a little bit...

We see a few flash backs... we see how bugged Doc Ock is... the words "I've been Spider-Man since I was 15-years old" keeps going around in his head...

When Jordon gets to the school, his crush is waiting for him. There is panic in the streets, as Doc Ock is there, having a fight with Spider-Man.

Ock (like JJJ) thinks Peter, and his Aunt May, must have been laughing at him all these years. He recaps the story of the time he had Peter in his "arms" and let him go... because he didn't know. He's mad and pounds on Peter...

Jordon thinks he should DO something and goes to stand behind Ock. He speaks up. (I'm paraphrasing here.) "Yeah, if you had killed him back then, you wouldn't have been killing Spider-Man... you would have been killing a kid." Ock looks around... "And if you kill him now... you won't be killing Spider-Man, you'll be killing a teacher, and a family man... who has people who depend on him and love him..."

Ock turns to the kids and menaces... "Like you?"

What happens next is kinda cool... it ends rather quickly... but surely you don't want the WHOLE thing spoiled do you? :)

Wow, that sounds really cool. I particularly like Ock's reaction regarding Peter and May. Can't say I blame him for thinking like that.

I don't mind if you spoil the ending. I'm a spoilers man myself :)

Thanks Captivated. Much appreciated

Okay... you asked for it.

Doc Ock asks Jordon, "Are YOU one of those people who depend on Parker?"

He's a brave kid to answer Ock, who is towering over him (and his little girl-friend, Madeline) "Well... I'm one of his students, so yeah..." Madeline, hiding behind him says, "We both are."

Ock (who is mostly screaming here) points at Spider-Man, "And you think he actually CARES about you?"

Jordon, in a round about way answers, "yes," Madeline echos him.

Ock is impatient and a little incredulous... "And WHY, pray, should that matter to ME? In other words, why are you telling me these things?!"

Spidey -- who isn't on the ground anymore -- moves in behind Doc and says (with typical Spidey sarcasm) "Umm... just a guess... but, probably he was DISTRACTING you to buy me some time..."

Ock looks around..."What?"

It's the last thing Ock sees... Spidey, with his fist drawn back (perfectly mirrored in his goggles). With that Spidey knocks him into next week.

The kids are VERY impressed... Peter and Jordon exchange a few words and the narrator gives us an epilogue. It will make you smile. :)

LOL! I love it. Man, Ock is such a nasty piece of work. He cares about nobody and nothing but himself :D

Thanks again Captivated. I'm really looking forward to this one now.
