I can't believe that the actress portraying Mary Jane doesn't appear to be a perfect translation of the comic book drawing from the 1960's! But I love that they got Electro's blue-skinned, black leather-clad look correct.

I think the way I see it, some people are just disappointed the team aren't following the comic books and some people are really happy/ over the moon that they are doing their own thing. I think the only issue is and this doesn't just relate to MJ/Shailene is that if they stray too far away from the source materiel i.e, changing the characters, making them different from the comics, etc, it really doens't have any place calling itself an adaptation of the comics. More like 'loosely based on Spider-Man comics.' Obviously 'fanboys' are very sensitive. When they regard the comics so highly and then a studio adapts them it irks them when they change so many elements. They will still go and see it, but part of them wonders why they had to deviate so far from the comic books, when to them, it was fine the way it was. Others are just glad they are doing another Spider-Man movie, regardless of what they do to it. Some people are wait-and-see kind of people, they will see if they like the take on it and then decide if they like it and some people couldn't give a flying flip what they do with the movie, they just want something decent to watch for 2 hours to kill some time. Everyone has different reasons for seeing movies.

Speaking on topic about Shailene/MJ, Im not gonna lie and say Im not a little dissapointed that they went the Ultimate MJ route, I dont hate her by any means, but she kind of seemed like a re-hash of Gwen from Amazing SM. From the sounds of it the writers were always looking for a way to switch the two characters around and they did that in Ultimate SM. I think in TASM Gwen Stacy was basically Amazing Gwen with some Ultimate MJ thrown in, which is why it seems odd to be using Ultimate Mary Jane for the basis of this MJ. Some people like the idea of them both being 'intellectuals' some prefer a contrast. I always thought it was better when characters are a bit different from one another.

Well I feel like she has to contrast from who Gwen is. Gwen's intelligent and sweet, and MJ can be those but also differ from Gwen, which is what you described; rebellious. Also add feisty- and a girl who's down for a lot. Basically like TSSM MJ.
