The movies are pretty similar in their strengths and flaws. Both prequels have links and ties to other films (which were all fun to spot) and both took short cuts to get to the main plot. The action in Wolverine is better but the Kirk character track is much deeper in Star Trek. Kirk gets his butt kicked a lot in the film and isn't the dynamic presence you would expect. I know feet of clay heroes are endearing but I never considered Kirk to lean on the wimpy side. Also, I expected more from the villain's role in Star Trek.
A guy that happened to be thrown back in time with a mining machine was a little too easy to defeat.
He sure did a lot of damage but never registers in a big way as a character. Little things nagged at me in Star Trek while I let Wolverine be the "meat and potatoes" movie it was meant to be. Still, I liked them both, give them both thumbs up and got my money's worth and then some from both.

(I noticed a few plotholes and leaps in logic in Star Trek, MORE then Wolverine, but I don't think anyone is going to start a thread nitpicking Star Trek. Paramount gets a pass from fans but Fox needs to get drilled I guess.)
Haven't seen Star Trek yet, but I think you always get plot holes when you introduce time travel into the equation. :oldrazz:

Plus Star Trek has something Wolverine doesn't - a killer RT score and an A among users on Yahoo Movies!. A 96% on RT is higher than most of the Oscar-nominated movies, including TDK. That means it will have ginormous legs.

I actually heard some people say that they bought Wolvie tix and snuck into ST because it was sold out. They just sat in the aisles and when ushers came around just pretended they were walking in or out. :oldrazz:

Not necessarily IMO. This is Star Trek we are talking about, not the likes of Batman. I think Star Trek still has that "geek" stigma attached to it when it comes to the masses.

Good word of mouth = new viewings. A great movie = repeat viewings.

All of that = good legs.

Yea maybe so, but I still don't see it doing big numbers. It's Star Trek, not Star Wars.

Tracking still has it doing less numbers OW than Wolverine. But that 90+% RT score assures it a multiplier of at least 3.0. It probably won't have crazy legs like BB did, which got a multiplier of over 4.0. (Shush about the Wednesday opening! No matter how you slice it, the legs were still good! :funny:) But it'll certainly have better legs than Wolverine.

:hehe:

Yea I agree it will have better legs than Wolverine. But I just don't get it when people say Star Trek is gonna be a blockbuster.

Wolverine also had the advantage of being the first really big Summer blockbuster to come out, so a lot of people who were waiting to see a big action-packed movie would have gone to it regardless of the reviews it got.

Wolverine made approximately 8.5 million on Friday, down 75%.
Star Trek made 24 million.
Angels and Demons next week (which a predict will be a flop)
Terminator two weeks after that.

Remember that the film's budget does not take into account marketing and distribution costs, which are likely through the roof for Wolverine.

Thats an expected and good number for StarTrek and it's a crowd pleaser that doesn't suck so I expect it to have legs. Lets see if it goes up on saturday.

Wolverine had a big drop...as almost everyone predicted.

Are you kidding me? I just came back from seeing it and it blew Wolverine away. As much as I love me some Gambit, especially Taylor Gambit, Star Trek was far and away the better movie. :D

and also Hugh has a 3 movie head start on the new star trek team and on top of that what would most people prefer to see space ships or a man with claws killing people

Don't get me wrong, I used to love a bit of Star Trek back in the day. Mainly because...William...Shatner...spoke like...this... :D

But I mean, Star Trek is old hat, it's never had a really successful movie in terms of box office. Why would it start now? And I still think it has that "geek" stigma attached to it, much more so than comic book movies.

And I know Abrams has a big fan base, but I don't think the masses will be flocking to the theaters...en masse to see it.

Well, based on the numbers so far (It nearly doubled the biggest adjusted-for-income opening of any Star Trek film by a mile), Abrams seems to have successfully shaken any nerdy connotations.

My theater was PACKED, and I went to an afternoon show. I can't imagine what it would be like at night. It's going to sell out here....

This was an amazing film and the best Star Trek movie I've ever seen. :D Nobody in my ticket queue was there for Wolverine.....

Were you around when the old Star Trek movies were coming out? People went to those movies like they go to the comic book movies we have now. It wasn't just geeks then, and it's not just geeks now.

I saw Star Trek this morning, and it was pure awesomeness. It was truly the kick in the *** that series has needed for a long time. That was no geek movie, this is going to be a big hit for anyone.

My entire school is excited for Star Trek....a ton of people want to see ST because it LOOKS and IS GOOD. Thats why it will win.

Hmm yea maybe in the US. But there is ZERO interest in it over here. I think I've only seen a couple TV spots, no interviews with cast members or any programs talking about it or nothing.

And none of the people I know have any interest in it. I wanna go and see it, but not on my own.

Yea well, I don't really like his work if I'm honest. I got bored of Lost about halfway through the first season. The characters just all seemed like pricks, I didn't really care if they all died on that island. But I suppose I missed out on much of their development.

And Cloverfield? Cool concept and had some truly brilliant scenes. But it started to do my head in after a while.

Some guy my age brought his mum, she came in with her cane and all that. I had a wide spectrum of folks going, not just young people. :D

Cloverfield was the best movie I never actually watched. The story was great but the camera was so bouncy I had to only watch one corner of the screen or risk throwing up. Lucky for me I had no trouble with that with Star Trek. :p

So let me get this straight, Star Trek has a geek stigma on it, but comics don't?

:)

Seriously though, Star Trek will blow Wolverine out of the water. Stigma or no stigma.
