Snow White and the Huntsman - Part 1

I did not find much enjoyment watching this movie. The story felt like it just wandered with no real direction with some poor editing. Theron was over the top and chewing up scenery, which I'm glad cause it kept things from being a bore. I also liked Stewart and Hemsworth in their roles but the Prince was kind of useless and underdeveloped.

I felt the same way. I expected it to be as dark as it was, but it never seemed to be anything else. The characters were terribly underdeveloped, and the ending seemed just abrupt. Visually, it was a beautiful film (especially Chris Hemsworth )...but storywise I just felt it was a drag.

My favorite part was the Les Miserables trailer.

indeed. not to say I didn't enjoy this one, like I said Hemsworth was great, so was the special effects. My main issue was with the script, not the director. honestly I preferred Mirror, Mirror, I actually really enjoyed that one.

I do think the director gets some of the blame. Isn't this his first movie? It seemed like he was more interested in the visual look than anything which isn't surprising looking at some of the commercials and such he has made.

Just got back. Eh, it was alright. It had nice visuals, a pretty score and none of the acting offended me, so I don't regret seeing it on the big screen. But yeah, definitely could have used a stronger script and tighter editing. I'd give it a 6/10.

I rather enjoyed it. I even bought Kristen Stewart in the role. I might see it again.

What I did enjoy was the amount of diverse audience members last night. And there were a lot of people. But a good mix. Not just girls and young women. Fathers bringing their sons, teenage boys, older men and women, and of course, girls. But I liked seeing younger and older girls going into this. The fact that younger girls can see a fairy tale film of this kind of scale would be pretty exciting. I can imagine this being a popular favorite among them too.

Plus, if the film brought in the kind of audience my theater was packed with last night, it succeeded.

They actually succeeded in hitting every single demographic with this one. It literally catered to everybody, whether you enjoyed it or not.

Yup, and if a movie can do that then that's always a good thing. Especiallh something so typically catered to young girls.

dark fantasy elements and otherworldly creatures and bad ass dwarves and huntsman

and queen looking as evil as ever

not to mention the very lord of the rings visual look and battle scenes

When you have three separate writers doing a screenplay, it's bound to have some inconsistencies and disparate story elements. It was a bit over the place, frankly. It needed more polishing by a big-name writer before filming started.

And another element that annoyed me is the infrequent handheld shots for the action sequences. Either go all Steadicam and stuff, don't do handheld just because every other film is doing it.

And this movie is a wonderful argument that film is still a viable element to moviemaking, especially with 65mm mixed in with 35mm.

 

[Primal Slayer]

Saw it today and it was ok. Nothing special but not OMG horrid. It lacked any real kind of depth I felt and the story was weak which is sad since it couldve been stronger but alass it wasnt. Kristin was ok though I feel like she shouldve shown some more happiness at the end of the film when she is Queen.

They seemed to rush through a lot of things which made it weak. The king finds the evil queen one day, weds and beds her the next and dies the same night. Also the evil queens brother was STUPID, the guy didnt know when to keep his mouth shut.

Well, after we found someone to look after our kids, we tried to purchase tickets for the 9:40pm showing (because we did it last minute), and discovered that it has been sold out. Originally we were going to see it Sunday morning, but my wife discovered that she has a work-related appointment. Looks like I'm going to wait for the DVD to come out before seeing this, after all.

Btw, there were two sold-out shows, and I think it bodes well for the movie's OW.

Why do these non-LOTR sword & sorcery fantasy type films not review well in general? I always say fantasy is my genre but there are about 20 sci-fi films that beat out whatever my 2nd favourite film of this type is.

IMO, you're not missing that much. Living around the LA area sold out shows are never any indication how well a movie is doing, practically everything is sold out or pretty close to it. However, a projected $55+ OW is pretty decent budget issues aside.

Yeah I was shocked to see a line of people around my theater to get into this film. I enjoyed it though. It didn't leave a lasting impression on me, but I don't regret buying the ticket. If anything, it was great to watch Hemsworth do Thor-lite.

Also, I had no idea Nick Frost was in this one. So when he popped up I was like "Holy ****, that dwarf could be his twin."

Haha yeah, I didn't know he was in it either. I was kind of waiting for Simon Pegg to show up.

I thought that one dwarf was Pegg in like makeup and with his face shaved, but I think it was Toby Jones, the dude that voiced Dobby.

Snow White's character was so two-dimensional in this. She says like three lines in the film and two guys fall in love with her, "Doc" the dwarf (I think they called him Muir in the movie) was full on Deus Ec Machina, and there were so many plot holes.
How is it that she can just ride a horse, or swing a sword or go into battle? Where did that epic speech come from at the end? What was that giant antlered stag supposed to do? Why did the ferries love her? What's with the sudden "You are the One" crap they tossed in there? Art direction was great, good acting (especially Hemsworth and Theron), music was good - just IMO.

yeah I didn't dig the Medieval Jesus thing either. and it never was explained what the stag thing was, was it? was it the spirit of the forest? the king of the Faeries? The embodiment of nature?
