Rumors of a potential
Sons of Anarchy spin-off have been swirling since before the series
wrapped its seven-season run late in 2014. Now those rumors are forming into something more solid at FX.
Sons creator
Kurt Sutter is in the early stages of developing a spin-off around the Mayans for the network, TV.com has confirmed. (
The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report the news.)
The Mayans were a Mexican-American motorcycle club that played an integral role in the California biker drama over the years. The club's Oakland charter, which was involved in heroin distribution and led by Emilio Rivera's Marcus Alvarez, was originally an adversary of SAMCRO. Introduced at the beginning of Season 1, the Mayans engaged SAMCRO in a turf war, but over the course of the series the two clubs forged a delicate working relationship.
At the moment, Sutter is hard at work on the medieval drama
The Bastard Executioner, which premieres Tuesday, September 15 at 10pm on FX, in
Sons' formertimeslot. Sutter serves as creator, writer, producer, director, and even an actor on the upcoming drama, so if the Mayans spin-off eventually comes to fruition, Sutter will serve as an executive producer, but will not be in charge of the day-to-day showrunning.
Still, it makes sense that FX would want to continue to develop the dangerous and bloody world he created.
Sons of Anarchy's ratings grew every season to become one of the most watched series in FX's relatively short history. The seventh and final season averaged 7.54 million viewers, with the series finale pulling in 9.26 million total viewers. But are the Mayans really spin-off material? They were a near-constant presence in SAMCRO's world, but are they interesting enough on their own? We've put our heads together and come up with five possible spin-offs we'd rather see take shape instead.
The First 9
This is the most obvious choice for a spin-off, and not just because it's the rumor that's been floating around for years. The First 9 refers to the original (but not necessarily founding) members of SAMCRO. The group includes Jax's (Charlie Hunnam) father John "J.T." Teller, Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman), and Piney Winston (William Lucking). The story of SAMCRO's origins after the Vietnam War is a wealth of potential.
Nero
A late addition to the SAMCRO story, Nero Padilla was also probably one of the show's best characters. A former leader of the Byz Lats, he spent a great deal of time in prison before turning his life around and going legit with Diosa, an escort agency. It doesn't matter what era of Nero's life the show explored, because everything about him is interesting and has potential.
Pre-SAMCRO Chibs
One of the original series' best characters, Chibs took over as club president following Jax's final ride in the series finale, but even before he patched into SAMCRO, he'd already lived an eventful life. From his short-lived status as a medic in the British army to his time in the True IRA, after which he joined SAMBEL, there's a rich backstory just begging to be developed further.
