Far From Home Spider-Man: Far From Home General Discussion and Speculation - Part 2

People seriously think Sony's going to pull the MCU rights to Spider-Man due to Venom doing better business than expected? :funny:

I mean, Sony makes questionable choices, but even they aren't dense enough to do that.

Do these people also think that the deal was made by a handshake in a back alley or something?!

Maybe not, but it might convince Sony to keep some of the best Spider-Man related characters for themselves instead of sharing them with Marvel.

We're guaranteed at least one sequel with Holland rounding out his trilogy. Beyond that, I expect Sony to end the deal and start over with a new Spider-man.

I think sony is at least smart enough to realize that people will not respond well to yet another spider-man reboot, especially one that doesn't exist within the marvel movies

they are dumb, but I don't think they will pull that kind of nonsense

It'd be dumb but I bet they're going to see dollar signs when they picture Leto and Hardy fighting Zac Efron as Spider-man. Coming to theaters Summer 2024. I can already hear the Coldplay song cued to a skateboard montage.

With the success of Venom, u bet Pascal is gonna want Spidey involved with their go ahead cineverse. Yes they've got a good thing with the Mcu deal, but when is it ever enough for studio with only a few franchise IPs that are actually profitable. If Feige and Sony doesn't agree to having Holland somehow appearing in both verses, this could be the final appearance for MCU Spidey unfortunately.

Having watched Venom, it looks like they set up enough in in universe lore that doesn't require spider-man, and that was probably the idea from the start of making Venom since there isn't any Spider-man easter eggs around or Spider-man winks anywhere.

But yeah if Sony and Marvel ain't happy to renew the deal then yeah Sony will take him back. presumably its not about Venom, its about what the deal can offer.

Only issue i see is that Marvel may only make 1 more solo movie for spider-man, just like their other super hero properties, in which case you kinda have to question how else Sony will make their money from this deal beyond the 3rd.

Although i am kinda expecting the 3rd will be more of an event movie with some other MCU heroes showing up to help fight the Sinister 6 or whatever so they could actually make alot of money out of the 3rd even if there isn't a 4th.

But thats kinda like saying i think Sony are at least smart enough to know that no one wants to see Venom without spider-man... then they release the movie and its looking kinda good at the box office.

Don't underestimate spider-man as a property.

Personally i don't think they will take him out of the MCU... but at the same time i don't think they are giving him up anytime soon and it also depends on the direction of the MCU which is already going at rapid pace.

no one said they were giving him up or that people don't want to see him in a venom movie, or vice versa

all I'm saying is that spider-man being taken out of the MCU is just a really bad look for sony. A lot of people will be mad. Really mad. If you can't admit that, then you need to rethink your stance.

But you don't make decisions based on whether fans will be angry or not. if you did these studios (uncluding marvel) would never do anything.

Thats fine. but there will be a stigma that follows the next spider-man franchise right up until we find out if its good or not at the theater.

I'm not operating under the guise of hypothetical movie producer. If I was, I'd agree with you. But I'm speaking as a fan who usually is able to take the accurate temperature of the general audience/fans of these movies. And from what I gather, sony taking the character out of the MCU would not be something people would be excited by.

I think they want desperately to get the ball rolling on their shared universe. Maybe Venom didn't set it up to where Spidey was needed in the universe, but I think they know from a creative and financial standpoint, having Spidey involved will make things much easier going forward. Imagine creating scripts for Morpheus or Kraven without Spidey.. vs with, in which they just open up comicbooks and doing almost direct translations. And not to mention the monetary differences a rejuvenated interest-Spidey affords for these character solos that have drastically less popularity than Venom btw.

Agree that the new deal will be more complex. I see Feige wanting, momentarily, no more than 2 solos to round off Holland's arc as he has other properties to set up. Sony, not being concerned with Mcu timelines, will want a film every 2 years for however many.

The bigger potential deal breaker imo will be Sony's insistence on using Mcu Spidey in their films. They prob didn't give it much thought before making the deal, but Venom and their other planned movies have certainly changed things. Now will Feige be willing to make these concessions is the question.

Still hoping that into the spiderverse is a hit and sony decides they can use miles morales in their universe and let marvel keep on using peter parker.

It baffles me that Sony would rather create a villain verse than a 2099 movie verse or noir. That would be new and different and fans would love it. But yet they always listen to arad and his stupid ideas

I once said a real long time ago that if Sony wanted a universe that could possibly connect to the mcu while not needing to play into the mcu time line and be it's own thing the going 2099 is the way. But instead they went with venom. I love the character he's one of my longtime favorites. But I wish Sony had been smarter about doing all of this.

You forget the mentioning of John Jameson. :cwink:

The potential in this is huge.

Sony are already doing that stuff with Into the spiderverse.

But i agree they could possibly use an alternative spider-man for the sonyverse.

Avi Arad just has a ***** for Venom and has been trying to get a movie made since... who knows?

But they could have done much, much better.

Spider-Man: Noir would be awesome creatively and cheaper. But I don't think that movie makes what Venom will make. 2099 I think is a great idea also, but that could run into problems managing a budget on that production. Look at how much Blade Runner 2049 cost and inevitably lost. So I can see why Sony would do what they're doing.

Well do futuristic setting movies do well at the box office? blade runner, total recall (2012) and ghost in the shell didn't do great

Agreed. Which is probably another reason Sony avoided that. Heck, Blade Runner 2049 can be seen as a double whammy. Future setting with a noir feel...flop. I think they were a co-distributor on that one, also.

Outside of Star Wars, I think it's really difficult to have a "futuristic" or sci-fi film make a lot of money. Marvel Studios would probably be able to pull it off, especially with their success of Guardians of the Galaxy. Under Sony it would just fail.
