Far From Home Spider-Man: Far From Home General Discussion and Speculation - Part 2

Lol, so much hyperbole. The early reactions for Captain Marvel were glowing, too. Not gonna fall for it again.

I liked Captain marvel and its over all reception is pretty good but I take it you dont like it lol.

Im so tired of the spider-man 2 comparisons. It doesnt does to be topped. Just make a good movie and watts seems to hace made two of those.

Internets obsession with comparisons is tiresome. Also i see some people who have declared they have no excitement about the mcus future are still here constantly throwing negativity. Its really strange.....

Not sure about the mcu part but I think any movie franchise that has a lot of movies is going to have comparisons and are going to talk about wanting to top it. I think that is only nature. Franchise like star wars when a new movie comes out people always talk about were it ranks for them and still always talk about how empire is the best. Now that dosnt mean it has to top it but if its something you care about it would be nice to top it why wouldn't you want it to top it? Spiderman 2 is not only my favorite spiderman movie but one of the best movies I have ever seen period like my favorite or second favorite movie of all time. So for this movie to top it I am not expecting that has that would be a really high level for it to top to me but dosnt mean I cant enjoy the movie if it dont top it. I have enjoyed all the spiderman movies at least some what dont have one I didn't like. I known I am in the minority on that one though has a lot of people hate amazing spiderman 2 and spiderman 3.

Marvel's expertise lies in that initial theater going experience/first watch that leave people coming out glowing but by the time I finally see it, I'm not on the same page. Been like this with these critics for years now with MCU movies. Not falling for it again.

There are a lot of mcu movies I dont like that I think are ok/crap so I dont agree with critics a lot and its not just with mcu movies its with movies in general. There are a lot and I mean a lot of movies critics love that I think are ok or even crap and a lot I think are great/good that critics think are crap or ok. But I fell like the mcu has gotten a lot of better the last 7 years or so and I loved home comming.

Good stuff. This Jon Watts has really good comedic timing. What I've noticed of Homecoming at least. Another diamond in the rough director for the MCU?.. Quite possibly.

Damn didn't know things started to leak out already. Guess since Sony is involved it is less tight, going ghost again. Looking forward to the next set up and discussing after I go midnight showing.

Early Tweets are always exaggerated. They're riding that high from having seen the movue before the majority. The one thing I'm not getting overhyped about is the rave comments over the end credit scenes.

I have Spider-man 2 under Homecoming, Spiderverse, and Raimi’s first Spidey. I’ve never been on the Spidey 2 train, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy it more than SM2 unless it really messes up.
For me, the first Spiderman is the one to beat. 2 was good, but not as good as the first one.

I’ve never considered them anywhere near the level of TDK. SM2 I think of as a very well made film, but not a very good Spider-Man film. Too many mishandlings of characters/elements of the myth is for me. Molina’s Ock is a great example. Molina is great in the role, but my Dock Ock isn’t a good man at heart. It’s clear that SM2 was originally going to be Lizard and Ock, because Raimi essentially combined them in the film.

There’s lots of things like that which ultimately make it a very enjoyable watch for me. But if I turn my spider-fan brain off, I can see how it’s a very well made film. But to put it in perspective, Spidey is the character that got me into comics, and SM2 is nowhere near my top 10 comic films of all time.
SM2 is great on two points, villain and action. It fails on Peter Parker, MJ, Etc.

Even villain it falls short on for me. Because the Doc Ock I love isn’t one who is a good guy at heart who needs to be persuaded by AI to do horrible things. Molina did great with the material he had, I just didn’t like the material, because it was a weird Ock/Lizard/Curt Connors hybrid.

Now, if I put that aside, the character Molina created was done very well. It just wasn’t Doc Ock to me. In the same way that they never wrote MJ as the MJ I knew, or Spider-man.

The action was incredible though. The fact that the train sequence still holds up really is a marvel. The film is 15 years old and it still looks incredible in that action sequence.

Spider-man will always hold a place in my heart because I honestly never thought I would see a live action Spider-man translated well to screen. I grew up in the 90s, so right during the Superhero film dead zone. And the superhero films that were made we’re nowhere near the kind of SFX you needed to do Spidey well. So when it came out, it was incredible. It blew my mind.

In retrospect, there’s a lot about it that hasn’t aged well, and it still suffers from a lot of the same criticisms I levy towards SM2, just not as much as I feel SM2 has. But it’ll always have a special place in my heart.

Honestly for me, the one to “beat” is Spiderverse. But Homecoming is my #1 live action.

Have you seen it? If so, can you spill the details (using spoiler tags) or PM me if you don't want to publish it publicly?

I can't, not even via PM. Sorry.

I'll give a hint.
Raimi fans will be happy

I honestly feel like MJ was the weakest part of the original trilogy and that is coming from someone who is a huge fan of kirsten dunst as an actress. MJ is the one character that Sam Raimi never got right and as the movies went on her story just got worse.

recently I rewatched the first spider man film I was amazed at much the MJ and Peter story-line didn't really hold up. for example the famous upside down kiss scene between MJ and spider-man just does not work at all and makes very little sense

MJ french kisses a complete stranger in a dark ally because he saved her and peter a guy who we are told has never had in a luck with girls suddenly turns into a great kisser for that one scene lol

even as kid I remember thinking that there was something off about how both Peter and MJ were acting in that scene. seeing it today as an adult I now know that the reason I felt that way back then was because the scene itself was forced and very contrived

The whole scene felt silly and out of place
thankfully based on the early reviews it seem like we finally are getting a spider-man movie that does not drop the ball on Peter and MJ relationship like the old Sam Raimi Spider-man movies did

So, it's either:

Tobey back as Spider-Man via multiverse or the casting of him as Uncle Ben. Am I right? :D

It falls on spiderman's lack of humor that is it. I also dont get how people say spiderman 1 is better like spiderman 2 is better in ever way music, action, villain, story, acting. Not a single thing does spiderman 1 do better.

I've seen a couple of critics say that the movie does address (to some extent) the fallout of the Unsnap, which is good. I just hope it's done well

Endgame too and we know how that turned out!
Lol no that one did live up to the hype, for most people.

That's kind of the issue though, isn't it? Every MCU movie gets the same initial hyperbolic praise. It's becoming a joke.

It's great to hear the MCU has finally made a non-Tony/Pepper romance work.

Not a fan of Steve/Peggy?

IMO the first Spider-Man was the one that really kicked off the modern superhero boom, not X-Men and certainly not Blade. It had the reviews, the box office, and certainly was more colorful and comicbooky.

After Spider-Man 2002 we haven’t had a dummer without a superhero movie

Well, I'll probably go ghost from here on in. Good to see the reviews are exceedingly positive. All I will contribute is my Spidey faves in order:

1) Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
It's the best. It just is.

2) Spider-Man 2.
Best live action.

3) Spider-man Homecoming
Best Spider-Man ever in the form of Tom Holland

4) Spider-Man
The first Spider-man film, and it lit a fire for Spider-Man movies that still burns because of it. In a day when big debuts are standard, this was the first to top 100 million opening weekend. Not Batman, not Superman, but Spider-Man. So...yeah. Everyone saw this film in the theater. Most people twice.

5) Amazing Spider-Man
I like it. Don't know why, but I do. Probably because Peter actually made stuff, and we had a redemptive Flash Thompson...who was totally ignored and forgotten in the sequel. Also, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy was perfect.

6) Spider-Man 3
I didn't hate it, but it earned it's negativity.

7) Amazing Spider-Man 2
Sony finally went Super-Spoiler-Saiyan and unleashed every nugget, Easter egg, tease, character death, and major plot beat in the 30 minutes of footage they showed before the film debuted, and it killed what should have been a winning film. One of the BEST Spidey costumes, the most tangible chemistry between it's leads, and an Oscar winner playing the villain...and they made it into an endurance trial. Last place.
