Star Trek Beyond - Part 1

Agree about Giacchino. I really like it when a composer is there for the whole film series.

I'm really excited for this film. They waited way too long between Star Trek '09 and ITD. I hope that Beyond gets back to some of the things that made ST09 work so well. I liked ITD alot, but I think it got alot of negative backlash, some fair, some unfair, but it is what it is.

Understandably they have a bigger role for Uhura than the original cast, mainly due to Zoe Saldana's rise to fame. I do hope they have a bigger role for Bones in this one. One of the great things in ST09 was they had the Kirk-Spoc-Bones thing down well. I think they went away from that in the last one.

So... I'm guessing no Alice Eve. Bummer.

I feel like there's not reason why you CAN'T make Kirk/Spock/Uhura the new "trinity." Why, because the show wasn't that way? I find that argument unconvincing. Heck do away with the idea of a "trinity" altogether and make it a true ensemble, I'd be all for that.

Because Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy is the greatest character in the history of the entire Star Trek franchise. In a possible future where everyone is either a milquetoast suburban yuppie or an inscrutable, imperious metahuman, he is the audience's connection to the world as we know it now, a mixture of pragmatism, common sense and human foibles.

Great cause, and great ending to the video! Only only does [BLACKOUT]Idris Elba show up, then he also break dances![/BLACKOUT]

BTW, I couldn't help it but to go 'WOW' when I saw Yelkin's hairline. It's receding FAST.

Seeing them all together reminds me of the first film.

I find it unconvincing that Kirk has to be Captain and that Spock has to be a Vulcan, just because the original show was that way. :o

BTW, there is a solution to Yelchin's receding hairline. He should get a Monkee's mop top wig in the same style that Walter Koenig had.

Well, said.

I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that in this version Bones is a second tier character, akin to Chekhov and Sulu. It's a shame but it looks like that's how they've decided to play it.

Look at how they've assembled the cast in the last shot of the video - Pine, Qunto and Saldana are at the center and come in first. They're the Big Three. Urban is fourth, on the same level with Cho and Yelkin.

But he wasn't that 2nd tier in the first movie. He was Kirk's best friend there, and they were academy buddies.

I don't think Abrams really understood the more philosophical side of Star Trek properly with all the allegories. They were often debating some moral issue, and Spock and McCoy always represented two different sides of the argument, with Kirk being a more halfway view between the two. I would like to see that aspect return. Uhura doesn't really offer anything in particular to the debate in this regard. She's just there as a love interest to Spock and a strong female character for the audience.

Well, actually, I thought he *was* second tier in the first movie. Bones was pretty much out of the story after they left the Academy, except for the occasional snarky comment and a few moments on the bridge. The back half of the movie was all Kirk and Spock, Bones was barely around and he certainly wasn't shown as having anything important to do in connection to the story.

I never got the vibe that Pine's Kirk is nearly as close to Urban's McCoy as the original versions of the characters were. There's no hint of deep trust or friendship. These movies make it seem like Spock is Kirk's only close friend. McCoy seems more like just a guy he knew at the Academy, and he's now the doctor on his ship, and that's it. More of an acquaintance than a very close friend. It's disappointing because Urban's McCoy is so fantastic, and so far this franchise has completely wasted him.

I'd say those two things are mutually exclusive. Despite attempting to sell her as one due to her assertiveness and prominence, Uhura was far from a strong female character in STID because of the former. You can't really be a strong female character if your value and importance is tied to your relationship to a male character. It's ironic because if they actually made these movies more about Star Trek's core themes of exploration and diplomacy, Uhura's communications skills would actually make her a useful and central character...

In the other Star Trek series, the female characters weren't just there as love interests but seemed to have their own role as part of the crew, whether as counsellor, doctor, chief engineer, science officer etc. They may have hooked up with someone later, but they weren't there as that from the start.

Abrams should've just made Uhura a character in her own right with an important role without being tied to Spock. I'd like to see those two not in a relationship anymore now that Abrams is gone.

No, I'm fine with the relationship. I actually find the idea interesting. The trick is to make it so that's not the ONLY thing that she's there for. Which isn't much of a trick actually.

Umm, no. I like Bones, but I would list MANY ST characters above him.

Fair point, but as a fellow Trekker, I'm genuinely curious who you think is better, and why. Bones is definitely in my "best-of-the-best" crossover Trek crew.

Am I understanding correctly that the closest thing we've gotten to official confirmation that Elba is in this movie...... is a f***ing dance video?

What world is this?

The world beyond.

Yes, definitely. He's better off with Star Wars. (Not that I have anything against that. I love SW as well as ST and I think he will deliver wonderful SW film (at least I hope so :yay:).)

I want those true Star Trek times back when it was about philosophy and psychology and sociology, etc., not about how long can Spock punch Khan.
(And as huge ST fan as I am, I think The Wrath of Khan was in a fact one of the weaker films in ST history. I still think the first Star Trek from 1979 is the best ST film. It's the essence of sci-fi genre. Encounter with unknown alien intelligence from space. No silly action or humour, no explicit love story. Just beautiful strange images, astounding music and clever conversation between characters. It's nearly mystical experience. Wrath of Khan was somewhat stupid in comparison.)

Agreed on all points.

The women characters arent just there as love interests.

In Star Trek 09 Uhura saved everyone's life when she intercepted the klingon transmission. Then she backed up Kirk on the bridge when he was trying to convince Pyke that they were warping into a trap. She then became the transmission officer because she can recognize Romulan. She went down to Kronos and fought in a firefight in STID. And Carol Marcus saved Bones's life when that bomb was triggered.
