Star Trek Beyond - Part 1

The women characters arent just there as love interests.

In Star Trek 09 Uhura saved everyone's life when she intercepted the klingon transmission. Then she backed up Kirk on the bridge when he was trying to convince Pyke that they were warping into a trap. She then became the transmission officer because she can recognize Romulan. She went down to Kronos and fought in a firefight in STID. And Carol Marcus saved Bones's life when that bomb was triggered.

You will notice that our comments specifically excluded ST09. Uhura's characterization was much better in that film, but they definitely fumbled with what to do with her in STID. The fact that your list of Uhura's contributions in ST09 was much longer than that of both her and Marcus in STID proves our point. Uhura had no purpose being the shuttle at the start of the film other than to act as Spock's concerned girlfriend there to support him. That was bad writing and set the stage for the rest of the film.

I find it incredibly silly that women showing concern for their partner or supporting them is viewed as weakness or as somehow being wrong. Frankly I think it's a immature viewpoint and I'm getting sick of this faux feminist BS. Uhura behaved like any normal human in a relationship would. Her gender has nothing to do with it. She cares for Spock. She was with him on the shuttle. There isn't a single thing wrong with that, and it doesn't make her look weak. It makes her look like a human.

And considering that the Enterprise had no need for a communications officer while it was setting on the bottom of the ocean her being on the shuttle isn't endangering the Enterprise. And since Kirk, Spock, and Pyke have all three played a bit loose and fast with who they take on missions in ST09 it isn't a unique situation.

That one of the set reminds me of the original Planet of the Apes.

This is a movie that I always forget is coming out next year, even though I'm a fan of the franchise and it's the 50th anniversary... I hope it really surprises me.

I don't want to see crashed ships. I want to see Spock and some alien in a midst of some juicy philosophical disputation. :woot:

Same and same. The reboot hasn't done a lot for me, but I don't hate it either. My biggest issue is that all the movies going back to the very first one rarely seem to "seek out new life and new civilizations" and instead have focused on mining past glories. It sounds like this one might be different though, we'll see.

Gone are the multi-colored shirts of the past, replaced by a more utilitarian mix of blue and yellow jackets, knee-pads and boots. (Their closest Trek equivalents, at least in terms of color-choices, are the jumpsuits of Star Trek: Enterprise, although design-wise they look not too dissimilar to Star-Lord's costume in Guardians of the Galaxy.) This doesn't mean that the traditional look has been entirely abandoned, however; the footage also features Simon Pegg's Scotty, wearing a version of the uniform as appeared in the previous two movies.

I hope we do see more of the classic primary colour uniforms though. We need to see them as part of the 5-year mission. They hadn't even started that for the past 2 films, and now that they have finally begun they can't almost completely abandon that look. For the 50th anniversary, they need to remain classic.

Now that's what I'm talking about. With Abrams we would have never seen this footage. This excited me. And those new uniforms and the new alien are so fresh feeling. Scotty has the old uniform but even that has some modifications which I much prefer. It keeps true to the basic concept of the classic uniforms, but feels more like a uniform instead of just a shirt.

Sofia Boutella looks GREAT. Simon Pegg mentioned wanting to bring in new species that we haven't seen before, and I guess Sofia is playing a member of one such species. Also I'm getting "uneasy alliance" vibes between her and Kirk in this pic.

Didn't we get a bunch of greenscreen pics of Spock's fight with Khan?

Yes, we did, way ahead of time, before we knew anything about Cumberbatch's role other than that he was supposedly a villain. People were analyzing the pics, discussing what it meant that Cumberbatch seemed able to fight Spock hand-to-hand, and trying to get a good luck at his ears and figure out if he was a Vulcan.

So I'm not sure what Doctor Jones is talking about.

Anyway, Pine looks hot and the new alien is cool looking.

so this is how it looks when JJ is not the director? they dont hide the uniforms for 6 months?

haha :)

The standard shirts have been updated too. Pegg's shirt has a higher collar, a darker strip on the side of his torso and the shirts are not that netted looking material.

JJ thought that there was no way to take pictures from a distance with a camera . after the images went online they changed something on location to better hide the actors.

if i remember correctly we would have seen everything from Urban and Eve when they were filming next to the torpedo. but they added extra walls.

it will get harder every year. quadcopters are cheap. and we will get more and more footage from sets.

Was that officially released though? Admittedly I forgot about that but when I look back, I thought it was leaked? This has coverage from a high profile industry site.

Sofia Boutella is absolutely beautiful. Not hot, but BEAUTIFUL.

If Im remembering correctly, JJ had those big steel shipping containers stacked up around the location set to block people from taking pictures.
